There's some research showing that the ideal bar bath makes the J curve but the other way than what you showed: Pushing straight off the chest shouldn't go straight up but up and toward the head, and it gets straightened out near the lockout
How about a lot of powerlifter benching the bar to what in your image is the upper stomach? This guy here is very heavy so i think it might be better for him to do like you say but other ppl who can arch a bit more might find the other way better for them
This is not the right bar path. Drive the bar back toward your face as you press the bar off your chest instead of initiating the press by driving the bar straight up. This makes the lift MUCH more efficient. | \ Like that ^
