Classic Cars often have underpowered electrical systems. In this video, Nick discusses what a Big 3 Wiring Upgrade is, and shows step by step instructions on how to perform this simple upgrade on your classic car.
The Big 3 (or Big 4) wiring upgrade can be done on any type of automobile, new or old. Classic cars, hot rods, restomods, and race cars can benefit greatly from this update to deliver a consistent and reliable electrical connection, ensuring headlights remain bright at low RPM, custom stereos have enough juice to power amps, and much more.

thanks for showing a video on a classic car big 3 upgrade. I have a 1972 plymouth satelitte and i was concerned that the alternator wire would be effected considering the old school engineering which was very good back in the day. Makes sense to add another ground to the alternator thats genius. i hope that this will make everything smooth again thanks again.

Just a quick tip that I think improves on the large electrical connections. I have always used the thin copper foil that you can source from any welding supply house. These are used on welding lead connections. You take the copper foil and wrap around the bare wire before inserting into your crimp connection. This also makes it easier to insert the wire into the connector because you are not fighting any small wires that might be sticking out. This makes a really good tight connection when the connector is crimped on the heavy gauge wire.

We used to ask for 'police special' alternators back before more powerful units were made for anyone. Worked fine on stock wiring harnesses. Seems funny now. That 1/0 cable is normal. Make sure to install tinned copper lugs.

Hey Nick! Totally unrelated, did you ever post the other vids of your TKX install? I’d love to know what size driveshaft you used

Almost did the Big 3/4 on my Jeep. I had this plan to use a marine inline fuse inverter so i would never have to worry about fuses breaking. Never go around to it though. On my 66 mustang this might be a nice upgrade especially since i plan on doing the electronic power steering conversion.

Just buy Audio battery connectors because they have lugs to run the 0 gauge right into.Nice and clean.Amazon sells a pair for $25 or less and even more hookups for a little more $.

"it doesn't belong on a classic car" 😊 that engine is era appropriate though. Just kidding it looks good. I left my oxigen free copper 0 guages all running on the passenger inner fender parallel to each other with distribution blocks, but i have to feed a second battery and 2 huge amps my chevelle is a custom restomod though, I do get what you are going for however. Good meticulous work man.

Nice Video, In 100% of cars there is no fuse from the battery to the starter so why the alternator and what end would the fuse be, if the fuse is at battery you fried alternator if its at the alternator you started a fire or cooked your battery. I think with a big enough cable and good connection with the shield loom that your using . 'Should have no problem"

Great video. What size fuse do you use for 4g wire?
@ClassicNation
@ClassicNation 2 года назад
Thanks! 150 amps is sufficient to protect a 4g wire but I try to stick to125 amp or less!

Question. I have 72 matador an it recently started to die after starting it. Like the battery completely dies an won't crank. Everything is new. What should I look for?

Like the fuse protection. Would fusing both ends of the alternator wire be a good idea to protect the entire run?
@tittyrino
@tittyrino Год назад
Only one fuse less than 18 inches away from the battery.150 AMP fuse minimum.
@rollingthunder1751
@rollingthunder1751 Год назад
@@tittyrino Thanks for the reply. I thought the same, but after further thought, if the wire shorted the fuse would blow and cut power from the battery. However, power would still be coming from the alternator and the length of the wire to where it grounded or to the battery side fuse would still be hot.

Just run the negative battery cable straight to the back of the alternator case
@ClassicNation
@ClassicNation 2 года назад
Yep, you could do that, if your alternator has a ground post on the back. Some do, some don't. Mine doesn't, otherwise thats exactly where I would have landed it. Thanks!
