How To Bleed The Fuel Cooling System On Your 6.4 Powerstroke

The dedicated fuel cooler system on 6.4's is notoriously hard to bleed air out of. Here I show my method for getting it done right, it's ridiculous but it works. Keep in mind the system takes close to 2 litres of coolant, so if you haven't stuffed close to that in it then you either didn't get the system fully emptied or you have air trapped that's preventing the system from being properly filled.

I'm stuck in tok, AK hundreds of miles from any shop that would or could take a look at my truck. I watched this video over and over and over and 1 year after posting I would like to thank you internet stranger. This helped me a TON.

I recently flushed my system and replaced it with the cat elc coolant. Did the same procedure to my engine a few years back. Didn’t want the crap gold dropping out sand to eat away my front cover and water pump. Have 211xxx trouble free miles out of my 2009. It was completely deleted the day I bought it. Intake, 4” turbo back and spartan tuner. Transmission gave up the ghost at 194xxx. Oil changed every 5k. Both fuel filters every 10k. Engine bone stock. It’s been a great truck and it’s paid off. Plan on keeping it forever. In the process of saving up for a KDD 6.7 steel piston replacement engine for when this ol girl gives it up. 6.4l are great trucks if you are very strict on the maintenance. Great videos kind sir!

I just filled mine under vacuum. No issues. Great video for those who don’t have the airlift system.

I understand that this system requires a different antifreeze than the engine ?

hi. I'm Su from Korea. Actually, I am Diesel Engine Quality Engineer in Korea motor company. Recently, we launced 3.0 inline 6 diesel engine , and had a Engine-Stop , due to wear of High pressure pump roller wear. Small particles from high pressure pump stucks at injector and engine stops. Mostly in summer and few diesel at fuel tank. We test a lot and finally found that , "high fuel temperature loss viscosity of Diesel fuel, and impacts and high fuel pumping roller wear. Max 86 Cº fuel temp checked just before high pressure pump. Question : Does all USA Diesel vehicle has a fuel cooler????? I really need your opinion. Thanks regard.

It's pretty common now, though it wasn't in older vehicles. It's normally found on modern common rail injection systems that recirculate the waste fuel from the rails, the rail pressures in those systems bring the fuel temperature up considerably. When that fuel is constantly recirculated through the high pressure pump the fuel temperature will get dangerously high without a means of cooling it before it goes back to the pump.

Hey Power-strokers, I just had to deal with this after doing a Mishimoto intercooler and radiator upgrade. I think I was able to get the air bubbles to pass through the pump by squeezing the intake hose leading into the 12V fuel coolant pump (under drivers side wheel well). It took several times (of me pulling over and squeezing the hose every time the pump started making the cavitation noise), but eventually it stopped making the noise. My thought is, by restricting the hose leading into the pump, it temporarily increases the flow causing the bubbles to make it passed the pump. I'm not, however, convinced the bubbles make it out to the reservoir, they might just be building up in the heat exchanger. In this regard, this method is just a quick fix.

Does the fuel cooler pump have to do with the truck not heating inside?
@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223
@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223 2 года назад
No, the fuel cooler system is a standalone system, it doesn't do anything except cool the fuel. No components are shared with the engine cooling system, which is used to heat the cab

Thermostat. There are 2 and these trucks love chewing through them. Also put the updated radiator hose from Ford. 2 o rings instead of 1.

What kind of coolant does the fuel reservoir take?
@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223
@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223 3 года назад
Pretty much whatever you want to use, unless you're topping it up and then you want to use something compatible with what's in it already. It's a basic system with an electric pump as the only moving part, and it's totally isolated from the engine, so any kind of coolant will do the job.

@@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223 cool...my employer had recently purchased an 08 450 chassis model and will not get a manual for it. The stickers on the reservoir show to add a yellow looking coolant and was having a little trouble matching the coolant. Not sure what was in it as the reservoir is empty but I will dig a little deeper and figure it out. Very informative video and thanks for the info!

@@terrywarr4477 If it's still running the factory coolant it'll be Motorcraft Gold, same as the stuff they put in the engine. 13 years would be a long time to leave the original coolant in, but you never know. Either way I'd just flush it out and add something easier to get, and you should track down why the reservoir is empty, leaking hoses is common but I've heard of the fuel cooler itself failing and leaking coolant into the fuel...I've never seen it but it would wreak havoc on the fuel system if it did. Glad the video was helpful!

@@terrywarr4477 While technically the system can use whatever coolant as stated, the coolant that is called out for this is the same that is used in the engine cooling system. There is no reason to complicate things, system spec says to use Motorcraft GOLD, so whatever is the analogous gold you're using in the engine, you should be using to top this system off. You should not need to top this system at all unless you had to drain it or you have a leak.

im just wondering if you have tried to pull a vacuum on the system and filling it like you do with the radiator?
@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223
@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223 3 года назад
I don't have a setup for pulling vacuum on cooling systems. One day, maybe. It should work fine for this, I can't imagine that it wouldn't but without trying it I can't say for sure. The way that heat exchanger is mounted is a real wild card. They screwed that up bad, having inlet and outlet at the same end is never ideal but when they both enter from the bottom that's just simply a design flaw.
