How To Blend New Textured Drywall Ceiling With Old // Garage Ceiling Repair

If your home was built in the 1990s it is probably experiencing some failing seams where the drywall comes together. Since making this video, I have seen 3 other homes with this same problem--all were builds in the 1990s. Whether it was taped incorrectly (or not at all!) or whether it is just a product of having drywall in an unconditioned space, these drywall joints tend to fail.
In this video I demonstrate how to get a good match with your existing textured ceiling using a crows feet texture brush and some drywall compound.

The plumbers have cut a number of holes in our textured ceiling to get at the pipes. That leaves me to do the repair...which I'll now try myself because of this video. Your timing is perfect - Thanks for posting!

The builder "forgot" to tape the seams...yes..."forgot." Wink-wink.

Thanks for sharing your video. Eastbrook & Allen Edwin builders in my area are really bad at building cheap homes quickly and their drywall guys didn't use tape either.

I see just few things right off the bat that would help you a little bit if you ever find yourself doing this again. Just from my experience if you were to scrape back or sand about 6 to 10 inches of the existing texture around or in this case on both sides of the repair it gives you more area to then try and feather your new texture into the old. Another thing is I wouldn’t advise using the mud right out of the bucket the way it comes. It is in fact pre mixed mud but you need to always get a paddle mud mixer attachment for a good drill and mix that mud up real good yourself. What that does is if you notice you can sometimes see a bit of water just sitting on top of the mud when you first open it so when you mix it yourself with the drill essentially it gives you the right consistency your looking for. If it’s still too thick you can always add a LITTLE bit of water at a time until you get it how you want it. Less is more bc you can always add water but if you thin it too much you will then have to add more mud to make up the difference. It’s a battle sometimes but the more you do it you will figure it out and probably find your own ways you like to prepare the mud for the stomp texture. Good luck and I hope this may help some of you guys and gals out there that are just now trying to learn this technique!

Few things here. The crack is from not being secured properly. Your fix will crack again in a few years. Also always mix the mud up, do not just open it and grab some.

Do you have a picture of what it looked like after drying? Also, did you end up painting? I did some repairs painting , " mudding" etc and adding texture. I then primed and painted the while ceiling. It's in a bathroom. I then noticed a few tiny pin like holes mostky in the old texture . Also, after pri.i g and pai ti g the texture appeared flattened How would I prevent that?

This texture seem 10 times better than that popcorn stuff, which is impossibly hard to match imo, from someone who does sheetrock!

I have been trying to patch a ceiling spot and yes you need the brush wet first not dripping wet but real damp. Then apply the mud a little at a time . Then stipple the pattern. Also it will be wet and thick and may take 2 days to dry out and turn white white . That is what happen to me .

Good try but you’re doing it wrong. Use murco and mix thin with water and get you a long handle for the stomp brush. It’s called a stomp brush. Soak it in water first.

Yeah, that's a stomp brush texture. You can do that easily from the ground by putting a threaded broom handle on the stomp brush and using thinned drywall mud (thicker mud will give a more pronounced texture, thinner mud just a little texture). Put the thinned-out mud it a pan and its easy to dip the brush in the pan then up onto the ceiling. Kinda messy but you can do an entire ceiling quickly. I did that after removing popcorn ceilings in my house, worked great as I don't like the smooth ceiling texture that's popular in homes these days.

Lol....where's the finished product? Why would you spend all that time making a video then not show it when it's dried? You should do a video on how not to do a video.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of these videos with titles implying the person actually knows the best way. Or even one of the top three ways. This video should be titled : Experimenting with a ceiling repair for the first time. Just quit the bs titles
