How to Board Up Windows for a Hurricane Like Dorian

As a Florida Resident, I've come to expect hurricanes every year. I've found the easiest way to board up windows for a hurricane, and I'm going to show you how I do it here.
The biggest thing is making sure that if you have an impact, your windows are protected. If you end up with a window blown out during a hurricane, you want to patch it as fast as possible. The pressure difference from inside to outside is what can cause roofs to be blown off.
The way I board up windows for a hurricane is by using concrete tapcons, and OSB plywood. One thing to keep in mind when using OSB, is that there is a side you want facing in and a side facing out as it is stronger when oriented that way. Usually it is the smooth side facing down or in this case, in.
You will also need a hammer drill to drill into concrete. Here is what I use:
Dewalt Hammer Drill Combo: amzn.to/2MUE0aW
Tapcons: amzn.to/2ZNu2dp
Circular Saw: amzn.to/2zS74XX

Aren't you glad that young man lets you be in his video showing people how to fix stuff. LOL he is adorable. My two little boys are now 25 and 23. Enjoy them while they're young. You cannot ever love and protect them enough. A gift from God.

I think it's gonna miss you down there Jeremy, I couldn't even imagine what the folks in the Bahamas went thru for more than 36 hours that the hurricane just stalled out. I said a prayer for them folks down there. Now I hope and pray that it stays outta North Carolina and goes straight up the eastern seaboard and back out to sea!!! 🙏🙏🙏

Yes, we barely got tropical storm force winds for a few hours here. No damage to speak of. I’ve lived through 2 direct hit cat 4s that left our town decimated, and they were fast moving storms. The Bahamas endured a cat5 for 48 hours. I can’t even imagine.

When he was repeating everything you said, it reminded me of the movie footloose when he was explaining how to drive a tractor to Ren.

Is it better to put from inside or should I do from outside?

Not sure about the particle board. 5/8 plywood over the entire window frame would be better. But this is better than no protection.

I’m 16, not very strong, and my mom and sister have back issues. Our Dad is acting hesitant to board up our windows. Is this something you can do if you’re not as strong? Or are there better methods for that circumstance?
@jonathonmartin7563
@jonathonmartin7563 Год назад
You can board them up in two or three pieces as well... Measure half the size of window and cut to fit and hang top half and then hang the bottom half . Your not keeping water out so if there is a small gap it's ok just blocking against debri

Can I ask a question - how come you didn't use plylox? Asking your opinion.
@IAmAFixer
@IAmAFixer Год назад
I helped a neighbor install some plywood using them. I didn’t like them. Half the time they popped off before you could get it locked it. Just wasn’t a fan.

@@IAmAFixer Maybe you should go with the plylox - This is what I told the client - He felt it was taking too long drilling with the screws & wingnuts so he threw me off the job. I see a lot of people like them I'm just one of those people that do not like them and I think your way is the best to board up. Thank you for responding. The problem we had with them you have to cut the wood 120% precise - not one millimeter over or under - It Hass to be a perfectly cut exactly to the window opening up- if you don't have a window that is completely square - There could be problems- you have to have the exact amount of room for the clips to spring - Do not leave the clips out for any time at all they rust and you'll end up painting everywhere that you have the clips unless you got the stainless steel clips - rust streaks Because your ledge on the window slopes down - They may or may not work- They also scrape the paint so you will end up touching up but you have to do that with the other ones if you take the screws out anyways- You may still have to drill a few tapcons into your window ledge If you can't get the plylox tight enough because you have uneven stucco which defeats the purpose of no drilling - The windows are beautiful and I would hate to drill into that white area all around the window Finally we could only use them for one season because the plywood over the next season warped so much and then they don't fit precisely for the plylox to work- We painted the wood and that seemed to help a bit with warping but that is some added cost

Question, if a tree were to slam onto the wood with the way you put it, wouldn’t that shatter the glass or crack it? It definitely won’t go into the house I think. But just doing my research before I board my window. I couldn’t see someone doing it your way if you didn’t want to be trap in the house Or something.
@IAmAFixer
@IAmAFixer 3 года назад
I may not have shown it well, but I cut the wood so it is about 2-3 inches away from the window and generally not right on it. I also leave an egress in front and rear if the house so I could get out if I needed to.

good video, but I am also concerned you are relying on the window fastening to withstand the force of the wind. Making the plywood larger than the window opening would offer more protection. Your approach is still much better than the overpriced "impact" windows nevertheless.
@IAmAFixer
@IAmAFixer Год назад
Hard to see in the video; but my window sills are sloped. The boards are cut so they are larger than will fit right next to the window, leaving an air gap between the boards and the glass.

Definitely a good way to secure them (if you don't use Plylox) and very easy to patch and paint afterward.
