@ekakaz2296

Thanks for the video! One question. Did you use the same thickness clear glaze while both pouring and brushing? I thought that applying glaze by pouring needs more diluted glaze then by brushing. Thanks for reply!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Год назад
You're welcome. Good question. Yes you are right. When pouring the glaze should be the consistence of heavy cream. But for clear glaze even thinner. I only brush on 2 coats of clear glaze. If applied too thick the glaze looks milky. 😊

10yrs. ago...ouch... I tried to do this technique, but the person who instructed me had no real idea who much glaze to water to soap! I ended up with tiny bubbles, instead of the big, luxurious ones you demonstrate here. I tried all kinds of soaps, including Mr. Bubble bubble bath. So what was wrong? My instructor had us blow the bubbles on a tray and then sort of dip the bisque onto them. By the time we got that far the bubbles had popped and in THE WRONG DIRECTION. I gave up. Mind you, I have 5 moon shaped dishes waiting for this technique to give them "craters"! Your video is full of tips and techniques. I have some confidence now!

PS we purchased two classes one for me and my daughter she’s 17. Figured to get a handle on the pottery and then will see how things progress. Beautiful!! 😁 I want to try!!! I had tried applying Shellac wax on a lather hard bowl to create patterns inside and outside, then wet sponge off the clay surface a couple of times and where the shellac was covered, it produced pop-up patterns. I had watched a video, a pottery had painted his lather hard vase with under glaze, then over layed with Shellac wax, and it produced amazing patterns! 😊

Thank you ever so much for all your useful tips. I really appreciate your gentle teaching style I was wondering if I can eliminate the wax- on resist step by doing the bubble texture on green ware ( ie before bisque firing ) Will that work ?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 4 года назад
Thank you💖 You don't have to put the wax- on on. I only put it on because I wanted to keep the bubble glaze pattern on the bottom. When applying your clear glaze, you can be careful not to get the glaze on the bottom or wipe the bottom. You don't have to keep the bubble pattern on the foot. Or yes you can bubble glaze your bone dry piece. Happy Glazing. 😍

I wanted to try this but I’m not sure the difference between the glaze I have and underglaze also I don’t have wax resist but I have tons of stilts and such I wanted to bubble glaze a few small pieces I have… could I use my white glaze and do a bubble effect with my green on top of that and skip the underglaze and clear overcoat?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Год назад
Hi. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. I have found underglaze does work the best because you have to add soap and water to the glaze. This may affect the glaze when fired in the kiln. I would a test on one small piece and see how it turns out. 😊

Hi there! Great video! I wanted to ask about the glaze on the foot of the stoneware. Does wax resist make the glaze not burn to the kiln? Or did it not burn because it was underglaze, and underglaze doesn't stick to the kiln plate? All my best!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 года назад
Good question. You are right. The underglaze does not stick to the kiln shelf. But the underglaze might stick if applied too thick. I applied the wax resist to keep the pattern on the foot so I could wipe any clear glaze off the foot. Hope this helps.

Marie, if your milk frother breaks (it will, glaze is so much thicker than the milk it is supposed for), I read you can attach the stem to a dremel or a electric screwdriver / drill. Those have motors that are much stronger.

Hi Lara. That is a good question. Yes, you can keep it matte. But if you want it to be waterproof or food safe, you would have to apply a glaze on the inside. I have seen potters use glaze to create bubbles, but for the best results, it is best to use underglaze. 😊

Can I place a piece with wax resist on the bottom right on the kiln shelf? Will it stick to the shelf? I love your videos. Thank you.
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 года назад
Good Question Dana. 😊 You sure can. The only thing you can't place on the kiln shelf is glaze because of the silica in it. Also, underglaze that is too thick because of the tiny amount of silica it has in it. But a thinner coat of underglaze is fine. Thank you, Dana, glad you are finding value in the videos 😍

Thank you for posting. Your videos are very instructive and your work in beautiful. On the bubble technique...can a glaze of one color be applied uniformly as a solid all over, and then after it has dried...can the bubble technique be applied over the solid color? Or will these bubbles be lost in firing? Thank you
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 года назад
Thank you, Norma. 😊 Good question. I have not done this technic personally, but to the best of my knowledge on what I know about underglazes, the bubbles should not be lost in the firing. Underglaze stays where you put it, acting more like paint. If anything the underglaze colors will brighten up after firing. 😊

Good video but I have a question. My bubbles congregated at the bottom of my bowl and made a solid color. The color seemed to have dripped down from the bubbles that were on the side of the bowl. How can we prevent that? Is it possible that I used too much water compared w/underglaze? Not enough soap? Or????

Cheap DRY paper towels, you know…the ones with the texture like sandpaper, just lightly touch the bubble tops and they burst. No fingerprints. I also thought you were supposed to use a small foam brush. Dip it into the wax resist, tap the portion to have the resist on lift and move to the next.

I figured out kind of how to get the bubbles onto the pot but they didn't come out like yours, then I put a layer of clear and they went in the kiln, cone 10, none of the bubbles came out, all the pots came out a yucky brown/tan color with no bubbles. I used Los Altos clay and I know I should use a white clay and fire to cone 6 but is there a way to get better color on the bubbles with the underglazes@@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Год назад
Hi Lori. Was just going to say white clay and fire to cone 6. And you already said it. I'm not sure what kind of underglaze you are using, but some underglazes can't be fired to cone 10. plus, the higher you fire the underglaze to the darker they get. So that makes sense. I did that once with a beautiful bright green and fired to cone 10. It turned out a yucky dark green. You could try adding more soap. 😊

@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 года назад
Great Question. 😊 I have saved some for a few days and used it. It was fine but I do not know if it will still be good any longer than that. The soap may interact with the glaze over time. So I would suggest making small amounts. I did take a look at some I had leftover from a few months ago and it doesn't look too good. It's separated and looks like curded milk. I should put some on a test tile and see what happens. 😃

@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 года назад
That is a really good question. I have not tried it that way. I was taught to use underglaze. You would have to add soap to the glaze and thin out the glaze. Dipping glaze would not be stable enough to use unless you add a flocculant to suspend the particles to form bubbles. I think it is worth experimenting on one of my smaller pieces of bisqueware. 😊
