You nailed it. I grew up in Chicago on the south side in the 50's and 60's. Our neighbor had an auto parts store on about 75th and commercial avenue and I built my engine for my 1941 Willys coupe in his fathers shop in 1967. I would stop at Carl's Red Hots and get two Vienna Chicago dogs with fries for 25 cents each. The only drinks they had were coffee and Nedlog rootbeer. Those were the days !!!
South side Chicago guy here....Props for finding all the ingredients all the way down in Mississippi. Chicago dogs are a work of art and you nailed it brother.
As a Chicagoland native, both city and burbs, for more than a few decades, I'd like to say Great job, All the right, authentic ingredients (almost) especially for a southern guy ;) who's never had the real thing before! I have a few suggestions, maybe personal preferences, to make it all that better. Here they go, 3 to 4 sport peppers not just two, slice the pickle in half lengthwise (only use half), tomato slices, not wedges. white onions are original and authentic. Most importantly, plan it out, so you get a bit of everything in each bite! Enjoy!!! And remember, No-K 17!! :D
FACTS MY FRIEND being a Chicago born and raised kid myself you are 100% accurate my friend your attention to detail is amazing and I appreciate you thanks for reminding me what i need to make my own at home appreciate you stay safe
Love Chicago Dogs! Many props to you for going the extra mile and ordering the proper fixings! Many props!! Nailed this one brother. Can't beat a natural casing on a dog. Cheers Rusty!
Thanks so much Greg! I was very excited when I found that I could order strait from the Chicago dog source! Very good company to deal with, and I will be ordering again! These flavors rocked my taste buds brother, and yes, those natural casing dogs are very hard to find, or at least around here, and I know for a fact, I will be ordering many more of those. :)
@@SmokyRibsBBQ I ordered from them as well to make these. I’m glad you found the site. I got pissed off at the restaurants here in NC claiming Chicago dogs and they were nothing like the real Chicago dog, so I went online like you did and my own efffing dog
I'm not gonna lie, I came here to bust you out. 31 year lifelong Chi town native here and I gotta admit.... you absolutely nailed it! Nothing to criticize. You even remembered the importance of steaming the buns so they get soft and doughy (lots of people forget that). Now Chicago deep dish pizza is more of a tourist thing than something we eat regularly (some people love it, but many of us prefer a thin NY style), but.... there is absolutely no other hot dog on earth that can stand up to a Chicago dog. Well done!
Thank you, I appreciate that! I did research the dog in depth before making this video, and that's pretty much all I had to go on since I'm from the deep south here in Mississippi, but being able to order the right things from Vienna Beef was the biggest help of all. I need to order more, because they are excellent!
***** Delicious.... but not a Chicago Dog. Interestingly enough, how you cook the dog is open to interpretation. Some Chicago dogs are grilled (not often), but grilling the bun? Nope, the bun must be steamed to be a true Chicago dog. It's kind of weird, but there are many Chicago joints that use other (all beef) hot dogs than Vienna Beef, and they might grill, fry, etc. their dog.... but other than that, everything else must be exact.... agaih, just to be called a Chicago Dog (not to be considered tasty, haha).
Chicago thin Is NOT NY style!! The Dough is very different, crispy and flaky, not rubbery and chewy like NY pizza. Also the sauce and ingredients defiantly have a different, better taste. While I live out of IL now, and have had real NY pizza, I lived in and around Chicago for bit longer than you have, and so a different, possibly broader perspective. Either way I think we can agree, Chicago Thin Crust Pizza and Hotdogs are the best!!
NAILED IT! Born and raised in Chicago and you EVEN put the ingredients on in the right order. Don't know why it matters, but IT DOES...and you did it perfectly. I wasn't expecting you to get the POPPYSEED BUN has to be steamed...but you did. Well, well done! Hope all is well with you! Thank you.
Chicago born and raised here. Great job. You did them right. I have seen dozens of “Chicago Dog” videos and most of them miss one or two important ingredients. For me I have to have a steamed bun, vienna dog, neon relish and celery salt. Without them it’s just a hot dog. You nailed it. I hope your wife enjoyed them too. :)
My husband loves hot dogs I make them once a week I will be adding this recipe. He builds a lot of toppings on his and fancy mustards pickles relishes crunchy onions I actually make a board of all the topping ( kinda like a little buffet for him). I also cook German bratwurst for foot ball season. He told me he thanked God for sending me to him because I get his hot dog foodie obsession. I have never made the Chicago dog but now I’m confident to do it! 🙏🏾Thank You 😊
This video makes me proud. Being a resident here in Chicago makes me happy that your sharing one of our delicious foods to the world and you've done it correctly. ✊🏾
So being a lifelong Chicago resident and growing up as a kid getting hot dogs off the street cart (can't find these anymore in CHI 😞) you've reminded me of trips to Sears at 6 corners (CHI folks will know exactly where that was) with my grandfather and getting precisely what you have built here! For a brief moment I thought you were going to forget the celery salt but NO!! You nailed it! Well done video too!
I know this video is old as dirt but I just recently came across your channel and like your style. No overbearing personality, straight forward accurate instruction and details. Nice work, keep it up! I live a couple hours away from Chi and always jump on the local foods when I go.
Great video, coming from a Chicago South Sider. We put those sport peppers on Polish sausage sandwiches as well. Also, we often steam the buns open. Another solid video Russ.
Never had a dog from the Windy city, but now I'm wanting one! All the flavors and colors going on.... I can only imagine how tremendous the flavor was! I noticed you didn't want to stop eating it, but had to finish the video! LOL See ya in May big fella!!!
You didn't miss a single ingredient! From a Chicagoan, I'd like to express my gratitude and thank you for your time in making this video. Well done, sir!
I moved from Chicago to Tennessee, and you sir nailed it! This is the way to make a Chicago dog and I respect a fellow southern knowing the importance on a Chicago dog and how to make it! Great job man!
Great Video Brother! My Family & I operated a Hot Dog Business for close to 9 years in NC. We made mostly "Southern Style" and sometimes "New York Style" Hot Dogs (with the Natural casings), but I have eaten my share of Chicago Style Dogs too and I'd say you nailed these ones. Thx for sharing Linda... :-)
Va CountryBoy Thank you Va CountryBoy! I appreciate it :) Kinda cool experiencing these famous dogs for the first time! I love this dog! Great flavors!
WOW,You obviously did your research. So many video's labeled ''AUTHENTIC'' or ''Chicago Style'' but you truly got it right. Not just the toppings but the way the hot dogs and buns are warmed up. Really nice to see a chicago style hot dog video that truly gets the original right. The vienna beef site has the history and stuff to make hot dogs, polish, and beef sandwiches that are the originals.
Thank you, and yes I did research in depth before putting this on video, trying to come as close as I could to the real deal. I appreciate you watching and giving a great comment :)
This is so cute and i LOVE it. Life long 4th gen Chicagoan here and you did it perfect. I have tried every "Chicago Dog" in every city and it's true, it is very hard to find these ingredients, especially poppy seed buns, sport peppers and celery salt. But it is 100% necessary. Also of course 100% beef Vienna dogs. Thanks for doing this!
I was born and raised in Chicago. You just took me back to the good ole days of my childhood! I could taste that all the way out here in Louisiana! 👍🏾👏👏
Lived in Asheville NC for six years and there was an awesome hot dog place in downtown. Owner was a Chicago resident and the Chicago dog was her signature dog (and there was a great selection of famous regional hot dogs). Incredible. Never had anything quite like it since. Oh, like the other commenters are saying, this is the real deal.
I live in CHICAGO and eat at least 3 Chicago dogs a week, they are great. The VIENNA BEEF CO. is not to far from me and I go the a lot for the hot dogs. Years back there was hot dog carts on a lot of corners here in the city and back in the 1960's you could get a hot dog with everything on for 50 cent, they are all gone now. Your hot dog looks great make me want to go and get 2 right now.
Thank you Gary! I've never had one from Chicago, but tried to re-create what I think they are suppose to be like, and being able to order the Vienna products made this video possible. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Thanks for the upload. I was curious if you missed anything so I read the comments. Seems like you nailed it. Even the true Chi Town guys are raving. Nice.
Wow!! First time I visited Chicago from Venezuela I ate these and they were soooooo good! Thanks for the upload I'm fixing to make some of these right now!!!
This video makes me happy. It's not a Chicago Dog w/o Vienna Beef. Born and raised there... hard to find a legitimate one here in San Francisco tho. Cheers man
If you like hot peppers, next time you are on Vienna's website, you should pick yourself up some Giardinerra (what we use on Italian beef in the Chi). Giardiniera will make even an old car tire taste good.
Rus, I was out of town camping this weekend and we in a rush to get to the campground and the girls were complaining about how hungry they were so we stopped by a Sonic fast food place. Turns out they actually have decent dogs for a fast food place and they had a Chicago style dog. I've never had one before and it was really good! So considering that...I can't imagine how freaking awesome your homemade one was!!! Dang that looks amazing!!!!
I was supposed to move to Chicago before the ~pandemic~ happened and my plans got set back, so to make myself feel better I’m immersing myself in Chicago style foods lol! These. Look. So.good!!! Just all the best foods you can put together and in a hot dog? Yes please!
You sure nailed that Dawg! Great job on all ingredients. Very Smart to go with all beef, especially since you used the "Snap Dogs" (Natural Casings Dogs) because anything but all beef tends to be a bit mushy when cooked, and it's very odd to bite into the "snappy" outside then sink your teeth into a mushy interior. (Lessons learned from owning a restaurant for many years :) Excellent job!
You are the king Rus. My Lord that looks delicious. Good luck on your move. If I was there, I'd be glad to help, just to get a taste of your awesome cooks in return. I'm totally inspired by your work. It's truly amazing. Yummmmmm
Moving stinks!!! Get er done!!! So I can see more of Smoky Ribs. LOL. Everytime I've moved, I've always said, ''This will be the last time I move''. And then.........Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
Rus I just watch this Chicago Dog video after all these years. Want you to know you got it right!!! I used to sell Vienna Dogs at my BBQ restaurant in Boonville Missouri in the early 90’s. Great video brother
I only do one thing different. After steaming, I take the dog and slit a pocket and stuff my peppers in there. I think I get a lot more of that great pepper taste in each bite. Also, since the dog is usually longer than the bun, you get an extra pepper per dog. Great vid!
Nice twirl there at the end Rus, I love a natural casing dog but they are next to impossible to find here in the south. Another winner in the hot dog series for sure!
These are soooo good. There's a hot dog place near my house that does these. I tried a Chicago dog in 2007 and I've been hooked ever since. I seriously crave these! Lol...great job!
I love CDs so much!!! Thank you for the vid. I'm about to eat one but before I make it I wanted to get excited about it and the ingredients by watching a video. I also understand your pain about not being able to find the ingredients. In CA it was kinda tough to find the sport peppers, but I've made it by. Thx for posting!
Looks yummy !!! Only thing I need to do a little different is I would split the pickle and use about half of that because I don't want to taste nothing but pickle
I can't believe you never had a Chicago Dog.They are awesome. I don't buy dogs that don't have natural casing, if it don't snap I don't want it.I like Nathans, and Hebrew national the best.Great series, Thumbs Up!
Sal, I live in Mississippi lol! No Chicago Dogs here, other than what Sonic sells, but I will never buy another one of those after eating these! The Nathans and Hebrews they sell around here are skinless! No casing, but I now know the perfect place to buy them! Vienna Beef online!
Smoky Ribs the Hebrew national, nathans, and EVEN vienna beef dogs sold here in chicago are skinless also. The ONLY place you can buy vienna beef dogs with the natural casing is from the vienna beef factory.
Kenneth Odister If it wasn't for being able to buy the right things online from Vienna Beef, this video would have never happened. That's the only reason it is a real Chicago dog.
Just yesterday I visited a new restaurant called Lil America (started by a local Indian actor) and they have these hot dogs that they have named after the various American styles. They had the Coney Island, New York & Chicago style. I had the Chicago style dog while my cousin had the New Yorker - there were several ingredients missing from the list but the dogs were imported from the Vienna company. Tasted mighty good.
That is great! I went to my Twitter earlier and started following them. They also put the video link on their Facebook page! Very cool! I feel very honored to have a company of that caliber noticing my work :)
Your so right! Sonic is no where as good! I'm really glad that I found Vienna's website, and was able to order the kit that had basically everything need to make the Chicago style hot dog! I'll be ordering from them again! I can't find natural casing dogs in my area, so I'm going to order in bulk from them, and put them in the freezer for future uses
Thanks for the video Chicago dogs are best from the Vienna company ever since I tried one never went back it doesn't look like it should work but the flavor is unmistakably delicious!
I'm sold. When you get settled in your new place down there in Mississippi let me know and I'll drop in for a cooking lesson.. 😀 I love yoursimple down home approach. Thanks for posting from a friend up in Canada.
Thank you Cris! I can't find the natural casing dogs around here at all, but it's so easy for me to just order them from Vienna Beef in the future. They come to your door nice and cold. :)
Being from Chi-Town, I couldn't wait to see how you did...and I'm glad to say you nailed it! Never thought about the ingredients being unavailable...lol And you are right...they have to have that "snap" when you bite into them Nice.....
Nicely done! I live near Louisville (and just ate Sonic for the 1st time!) They offer this on the menu. Not a natural casing dog, but otherwise Identical to what you made. NOW I know what peppers they used, I WILL be making this at home... thanks to you, thank you SO much for sharing this recipe, I know almost 2 years has gone bye, but I hope the move went well. I sub'd a while ago... just felt to speak up on this one! please keep em' coming!!
Big deal. In my experience with "recreating" any dish, it's always your interpretation of what they are using, NO mimicked dish is ever 100% exact (right on the money). And a lot of times people will put a slight variation on it just to make it their own... The man did a fine job on this timeless classic.
Ray Lovett What this guy made is the real deal. This guys Chicago dog is exactly what I had at us cellular field in Chicago. What I was saying about the relish was that Sonic just uses what tastes and looks like normal sweet relish.
I have had a Chicago dog once when visiting Chicago; I was on Lake Michigan and the lady put 2 dogs on because I was from Mississippi (lil lagniapp). It was awesome. If the ones you made weren't good, you did a damn good job making look good, but I'm sure they were awesome. Checking in from Gulfport, keep the videos coming.
As a chicago boy - I was waiting for you to slip, but you got it :P Typlically they go a little skinny on the pickel widge / tomatos but it's spot on. The only way to enjoy hotdogs. Props on getting the legit ingredients from Chi-town Vienna is the only way to go with dogs.
Looked fantastic. I would have sliced the pickle and tomato a little thinner, just to make it easier to eat. But that was a fantastic looking dog. Nice job.
Kenny Perez I love a good hot dog! I don't really have a favorite because there are so many different styles and takes on a hot dog, and I tend to love them all :)
Although, I am 100% about the Michigan coney (koegels pork based w/ natural casing) Your rendition of the Chi Town dog is absolutely spot-on! Many kudos sir :)
Thank you!!! As a Chicagoan myself now living over 12 hrs away, you nailed a Southside (of Chi-town) Dog. Yes, Sonic doesn't even come close. Now to look if you tackled the Authentic Deep Dish Pizza (hint hint, in case u haven't).
Here in Atlanta, Avondale Estates, they have Skip's Chicago Dogs. They've been here for decades and build them to perfection. It took them some time, but they got it now. Next door is a Beer Growler so......there I go.
