Great tutorial! Especially all those small bits of information about where you can go wrong, how to fix the wobbling and (my favorite) how to add the second pair of of rotors without using a vehicle to lift the rotors while adding the rotorsheads! Thanks for sharing this with us!

My favourite part about this video is that it came out literally the day after I gave up on trying to fully figure out how you did this and just went with a single ramp style for my current project Still an excellent video though, and I'm really glad you went into detail about the rotor part attach trick, it's definitely been one of the lesser covered topics of rotors in this game
@Splitsie

I guess that was almost good timing :P
@scottekanny7663
@scottekanny7663 5 лет назад
@@Splitsie Update: It was actual good timing, single ramp doesn't work too well for vehicles with bumpers on them. I had to modify your design slightly but by adding ramps, or 2x1x1 armor blocks to the tip of the second ramp, and having that align parallel to the ground, it makes it extremely accessible for vehicles with 3x3 wheels. Set it up so that the "base" (The ramp that connects to the hangar) ramp-rotor was set to 25 degrees, and the "End" (Ramp part that touches the ground) ramp-rotor set to -25 pretty much solved every problem

I've learned so much about SE from your tutorial series! I just started playing the game and have leaned on your channel big time to get started. The location of my first base is sloped and I was planning on building a permanent sloped ramp to get to the hangar with standard block pieces, but this is way cooler and can be used on lots of designs. Hello, Splitsie! For whenever you feel in the mood, here´s a little suggestion: as you have already mastered the use of rotors for such a project, it would be nice to see you try the same ideas for those kinds of unfolding solar panels, like the regular satellites do. I have done a few by myself, but always a crap, and NOT EVEN CLOSE of this kind of use for rotors in your video. So, there it is. Again, THANK you for so many cool ideas! Cheers!

Great tutorial! I was inspired to make one of these myself a while back when I saw you first make it. Although mine was less pretty/symmetrical as I didn't know how to go about doing the rotor head shenanigans. Now I know :) One problem I found was that sometimes the ramp would dig into the ground when lowering or scrape on the ground when being raised. If the rotor closest to the vehicle goes too fast it'll dig into the ground on decent. If the rotor farther out goes too fast it'll scrape the ground. Adjusting the rotation velocity's of the rotors in such a way as to make them all arrive simultaneously helped with this problem.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
That's a good point, I did the same thing with the one in the series to prevent it from scraping, it's likely I'll miss bits like that more often since I'm trying a new type of tutorial where I keep things more brief than the beginners ones where they're normally about 30 minutes long :P

Great tutorial, I have always loved this design in Escape Unlikely. One minor tweak would be to have the single rotor (attached to the vehicle) move at a slightly faster speed since its total angle moved is greater than the other two. Or other combinations of speed variation which can determine the geometry of the region in which the ramp unfolds (does it straighten out before its final angle and then lower vs reaching the final angle and straight at around the same time).

God I’m learning so much from you. I’m new to SE. I’m playing on Xbox one X. I have already build a large ship that can land on planets. I have airtight doors underneath the ship, and then I have a piston that lowers a ramp like an elevator or lift for my ground vehicle. But now I’m building a new ship and using your ramp design. I’m building a DR-4 drop ship from Starship troopers. Just google it and you will know what I’m talking about. Pretty blocky design yet awesome... Now I only hope Keen will give us the ability to turn on Spider Npc. We only have asteroids. But then I will land on Mars and drop my friends off and watch them get shredded by spiders 😂

There it is, articulated ramps with a more shallow angle that rovers can actually climb, thank you very much! Something that I used to do is make the ramp with small grid, it's edge with blast door corners filled with heavy armor, but still a lot lighter than a comparable large grid version, just changing the first rotor's head to small, you know. Could be useful with cargo spaceships when you have to try and cut it's weight, but still carry your cars. Never articulated, because of course you've just showed the technique but should work just as well, hum, maybe? Anyway, thanks again!
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
I've been thinking of ways to get around the larger collision boxes that exist for the small grid blast doors so you can articulate them but even when I manage to I seem to run into torque issues with a ramp that's anywhere near a decent size so would need a piston powered system which gets inordinately complex :P

Something that large you'll need to use pistons to provide force to the rotors, which is too complicated to describe here but is something I'm thinking of doing as a tutorial soon :)
@mattp1337
@mattp1337 5 лет назад
Nice. I would've emphasized being consistent about how I orient rotors when placing them, so the 0° mark is the same way. and also placing rotor parts so their notch aligns with that 0° mark. It seems to help reduce/eliminate klang and phantom forces, which doesn't matter for a fixed-grid base or ground vehicle, but is a big deal for anything that flies. TBH, phantom forces seem to be impossible to eliminate entirely, and are the bain of many of my build ideas. Anyway, now do a ramp or mechanical arm where the piston does the work. Super fun for building replicas of hydraulic machines :)
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
That's probably good advice, sadly it's something I'm pretty poor at following myself as I tend to get away without being that careful :P I'm hoping to do a tutorial on how to use pistons to boost the power of your rotor based systems at some point soon but will need to put a fair bit more thought into it as my method is not very neat :/

If I remove the second rotor, I can put a blast door edge, but then cannot put the rotor back. They both want to occupy the same space, even when there is no rotor head there.

So far the best Ramp Tutorial, Done the same on my world but i have a question. How can i stabilize my ship if i add this ramp to it? It always moving in a 0.2 m/s or 0.0.2 m/s while hovering. I think it is impossible :S
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 4 года назад
I agree, I think it is impossible to stop that entirely with most systems that involve rotors. My guess is it has something to do with rounding errors in the physics engine and in this case also due to the opposing rotor heads pushing against each other a little even if they look to be perfect which creates forces the game doesn't handle properly
@markloots189

If your game decides to make one grid instead of multiple, extend the scafolding outwards a couple of blocks, add a piston towards the ramp and push the rotors into the piston heads

one thing i would like to correct is that the second set of rotors actually serves a purpose... in SE rotors are NOT PERFECT rotational axes. they have some slop and can wobble around if there is a torque applied in any other direction than the rotational axis. so the second set of rotors provides a second set of bearing points for the rotation, preventing the whole thing from bending due to its own weight

Several years late to the party on this one but I’m pretty sure I did something wrong. As soon as I attached the second rotor head at the end of the first section, my entire vehicle went into a death spin and obliterated my base and every ship and rover I had. What should I have done? Love watching all of your videos!
@Splitsie
@Splitsie Год назад
With hinges being available to us now I'd probably build using them instead of the rotors (you'll still need doubles in the middle section). The big advantage is that you won't have to deal with the offsets of the rotor heads which is likely what caused your rover to flip out - at least that's my best guess

Tnx Splitsie for the tutorial, but I can't seem to make it work. Since the date of this video has something changed in the game that does not allow these kind of rotor shenanigans? The last 2 rotor cannot move (not more than 1°) and I've checked everything at least 50 times...
@Yeebok
@Yeebok 5 лет назад
Hey mate ! Great video. I was making a door exactly like yours on a station in space, and no matter what I did the second pair of rotors would never move. Turn out they were inheriting the "is station" setting. Once I turned that off, the rotor appears to work as normal. Just an edge case but you may be able to update something to cover that for other silly people like myself ;)

Okay ... why not build the side scaffolding to get the rotors in place, then build the blast door sections? That way you only build them once, instead of building them, tearing down a corner, then building them again? Or at least, just skip those knowing that you'll need to tear them down anyways?

That looks like a good tutorial. I will have to try this out when I get to the stage where I can build something like that. There is one thing which I would like to ask tho. I wonder if it would be possible to have a tutorial listing all the keyboard shortcuts for entering values with keyboard, using manufacturing queue and auto-picking parts? And if there are any UI improvements/mods that would allow opening that popup menu that I saw in the mars survival scenario (Survival unlikely) you played with Capac.

Great tutorial - as many of your other videos. They helped me massively getting my way around the game. I tried exactly what you showed here for the folding ramp but somehow the second and third rotor don't move. I get a little bit of movement and then it stops. It is almost like there is no room for the blast door blocks to move. Has anyone else experienced this issue and more importantly, knows a solution or my possible oversight?
@petervandemerwe5903
@petervandemerwe5903 4 года назад
And after a few hours fiddling around - I found out that I need to build the rotors first with one block attached to the rotor (or one line for the ramp to get the length right) - configure them correctly and then finish the ramp as well mirror the free rotating rotors on the other side. If I build the ramp as a whole before configuring - it won't move on the 2 connected rotors as I accidentally attached the blast door blocks to each other.
@Splitsie

I'm glad you worked it out, it's one of those things I forget to highlight sometimes when building with rotors that the order you do things in can really matter to prevent blocks being considered part of the same grid :/

[Idea for an episode] I am trying to figure out how to setup a soundblock so it plays multiple sound(files) in a row, like a playlist without manually starting them. I couldn't find anything online on how to achieve this. (In a reasonable way) It also looks like you cannot place multiple soundblocks on a (bigger) ship and let them play the same sound at once simultaneously. I think the game disables the sound at a certain distance from a player and doesn't restart properly once you come closer again. Sometimes it starts from the beginning, often times it doesn't play a sound at all. It is very noticable when you are trying to listen to music files. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature (for performance reasons). So a general "soundblock" episode would be really cool to see from you. Maybe with some ideas how to use them. Are there any interesting scripts? Personally I would love to be able to built sound systems in my ships and play music on them. But that is not very practical atm afaik. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1278647084 This music mod is very cool when you are on a mining trip.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
I think you'd have to write a script to change which sound a block was playing in order to get them to do that, there's not anything in the base game that would make it possible as far as I can think of. Also, what you're experiencing is almost certainly a bug and one that's been in the game for well over a year so I don't like our chances of it getting properly fixed :(
