What is a Golf Simulator? (WikiPedia)
A golf simulator allows golf to be played on a graphically or photographically simulated driving range or golf course, usually in an indoor setting. It is a technical system used by some golfers to continue their sport regardless of weather and time of day in a converted premises. Simulators have been available since the early 1970s, and systems range in cost from compact units costing well under $200 that work with a computer or video game console, to sophisticated ones costing tens of thousands of dollars. Advanced systems may utilize a dedicated room, hitting screen, projector and other paraphernalia.
Simpler simulators typically do not possess built-in software, but measure the movement of the hand-held sensor and feeds the information to the video game. The information received is then translated into an action of some sort, usually hitting the ball. More advanced simulators often come with their own software, allowing the user to use the system as if they were on a driving range. Relying on a battery of environmental sensors, the software tracks each shot and represents the entire shot, from impact to how the ball bounces visually on screen. In this way, the golfer has a detailed analysis of the entire flight of the ball which can be used for practice or training.
Building a Home Golf Simulator is easier than most people think. It has 8 basic components. The first is a golf launch monitor, this is the heartbeat of the golf simulator. Then you need a projector, golf simulator enclosure or screen, hitting mat, PC or Mobile device, software, and cables. That is it! You can opt for turf in-between the screen and golf hitting mat as well. The golf launch monitor and software are probably the most important since these two are what determines the data and visual effects of the golf shots. But, it really is that easy!
This DIY golf simulator is a great way to train for golf at home, without having to travel to the golf course. We're using Carl's Golf Enclosure and HotShot Golf Mat to make this simulator work great!
Looking to build your dream golf simulator at home? Look no further! In this video, we review the Carl's Golf Enclosure and HotShot Golf Mat, two essential components for creating your own indoor golf setup. Man I love this setup! Carl’s Place really did a very nice job. This would be ideal for a pole barn or a garage! I’m going to consider this for my build. I’d have to go 4x9 mat though because I’m left handed and my kids are right handed. That projector is awesome. I’d love a giveaway! Thanks for putting out great content.

How far are you from the hitting area to the screen? Definitely interested in this set up, but I have a tight space of only about 7 feet of ball light so won’t understand bounce back
@GolfSimulatorVideos
@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
I am about 9’-10’ depending in where I place the ball on the mat. Feel free to email me, happy to help. I know quite a few people that do 7’, it’s tight for sure and you need to leave the right screen tension to ensure safety. I recommend at least 8’ if you can.

I like it, it is nice. What would you do for a mat when I am a lefty and my wife is a righty. We would like to play together. What would you change for mat? I have a Garmin R10 that I haven't used yet. Lower ceiling too.

Another well done, informative video Jay. I have to admit, while I like my 4:3 7x10 Carls DIY, I would definitely do a couple things differently. I'd go with the wider 16:9 enclosure and I'd go with the premium screen instead of the preferred. I also have some cracked concrete in my garage so that heavy duty rubber base is very, VERY interesting to me - even though your mat seems to have more problems than mine, I'd like mine to sit flatter and I think that would be perfect for my situation. I'd be happy to do a comparison for you if I happened to be picked to try the new C series and that hitting mat. Thanks for all your hard work and fantastic content!
@GolfSimulatorVideos
@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
Thank you! So 16:9 can be nice but you need it to be super wide in order to be 8" plus which I recommend for the best Simulator dedicated experience. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Hey! What is the spotlight that you use on your Sim? You had talked about video quality lighting in the past and I am using a photometric launch monitor and want the best results possible!
@GolfSimulatorVideos
@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
So I actually have a few mini halogens above my hitting area. But I have some new options that are perfect and non-flicker LED. I’ll put the link below. But with photometric, you shouldn’t need lighting if it has infrared? amzn.to/3NsvA8k
@samwebb1065
@samwebb1065 6 месяцев назад
Ok thank you! I actually just purchased this exact same enclosure during their Black Friday sale. I will be starting with the Skytrak because I like the bag mapping and wedge matrix they have. Then probably end with an eye mini because of their seamless integration with swing cameras. I believe both of them have infrared, but I would still like to make sure I have no flicker lighting. Thanks for the info!

Does your insert lay flat if you take it out and lay it on the floor? It seems like it might be just slightly larger than the hole that it goes into. Maybe trim the side a little?
@GolfSimulatorVideos
@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
I already tried cutting it. It does not sit flat on the ground well though by itself. It seems to have a permanent curved shape which is not helping for sure.

Thank you for all the videos covering home golf simulation. An idea for a giveaway could be a livestream giveaway. Make it an event with giveaways from tee's, balls, towels, up to the enclosure. Maybe a new years eve live event.

@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
Ohhhh! I like this idea! That is exactly why I thought I would ask to see if we could come up with something new and fun. Maybe I can get a few brands to donate some other giveaway items and I can throw in a few too then make the enclosure and mat combo the final drawing. Just need to figure out if there is a tool that will do a random drawing of a viewer and how to verify they are in the U.S. etc.

@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
I have seen mixed reviews as well. My unit has performed quite well honestly. I even tested it outdoors in the sunlight which you can see in one of my videos. I think that many units when they see specific golf clubs, or maybe turf or something they can get some various results. But from my testing with a good set up, the unit seems to be operating quite well. Only a few misses

You’ve now built the DIY kits for Sim in a Box, Skytrack, and Carl’s (did I miss any?). I’d love to know a little pro-con of each, or maybe where they’re very similar and where they separate themselves from each other. Gotta say that Skytrack rig with the built-in projector mount seems like a steal, but maybe the components are a little cheaper too? Thanks Jay, and Happy Holidays!!!
@GolfSimulatorVideos

I did the early 24/7 and also the SIG10 :) It really is tough as they all can serve such individual needs on pricing, features, quality vs price, Full DIY vs poles included, all kinds of things. I point most of this out in the videos. This screen to floor here is a first for Carl's and most do not offer it, it's a nice feature and you can see a perfect 4:3 size as well. I have also used a lot of various components along the way which can meet all kinds of budgets and quality such as projector types, mats, etc. I always encourage everyone to email me so we can get a custom package that fits their needs.

Love the videos you do! I’ve been having problems with the enclosure around my cage. I ended up going with a smaller and less well known seller of the enclosure vs. the more well known providers, such as Carl’s. But I’ve had lots of issues with the enclosure, specifically in the right corner where the side panel meets screen. I have their foam inserts that help “protect” the bar. But the Velcro that connects the side enclosure with the screen just isn’t working for shanks to the right. (And yes, I have been shanking shots as I’ve been trying to retool my entire swing…trying to shallow my swing and having the inevitable shanks while I try to rotate my body to square the club). Is this an issue that the Carl’s Place or other seller of enclosures is finding? I notice the Velcro attachment point is a little deeper along the side panel than mine.
@GolfSimulatorVideos
@GolfSimulatorVideos 6 месяцев назад
This is really tough to say since I am not familiar with your enclosure brand. I have not shank tested either so really tough to say but the foam is a memory foam that I am sure would absorb a ball.

How is the hitting mat on joints?
@GolfSimulatorVideos

I would say it feels pretty standard to me. The turf is the same as the stance mat. Just a relatively deep pile of commercial type turf. I will do a more in-depth look after using it for a while.
