How to Build a Modern Shoe Bench {With ONE 2x10 Board!}

My friend, Lindi, from Love, Create, Celebrate asked me to join in on her "Scraps Made Modern" series and challenged me to create something modern from what I had in my scrap pile.
While I have tons of cut offs, I also had this one leftover 2x10x8 board that I had purchased for a project, but ended up not using. So TECHNICALLY, it may not have been "scrap wood," it was a leftover piece I had no use for.
So I turned that one board into this simple modern shoe bench perfect for an entryway. It was so fun getting creative and trying to make the most of this single board. Check out how I did it in this video and head over to grab the full plans here:
www.woodshopdi...
And check out the other 2x10x8 project I built here (it's a fun bar cart project!):

Then head over to Love Create Celebrate's Scraps Made Modern project video here:

I decided that this would be the perfect first woodworking project for me. You made it look so easy, so I thought I would give it a shot. While I had to use more than 1 board, I finally finished it today! Thanks for your inspiring video. 😃

By having the top rest on the crossmembers, all weight on the bench is concentrated on four screws. It should be fine since people’s feet are on the floor and it’s a one person bench. Pointing that out for those who might use the same design for larger projects - like my wife that wants one now. Thanks a lot... 😺
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 4 года назад
That’s a very good point. But each screw has approx 100lbs shear strength so it would take about 400lbs of weight across the top for the screws to give. That said, that’s good to consider if you intended to make this longer...but I’d also suggest a middle support if it got much longer. Anyway, if you build one, I’d love to see it 🔨🔨😄 happy building!

I have watched a few of your videos. Great projects. Good flow. When you drop a bead of glue and just, seemingly effortlessly, drive a pocket hole screw in perfectly, it just seems like magic! Meanwhile I am creating jigs and clamping like crazy to achieve the same result.

Great little project! The rough cut dimensions of 39+39+18 does not account for the 1/4" the 2 cuts would remove. I see you trimmed the lengths back a bit so the important measurements are for the 18" and 9" cuts. Those lengths are more important than the others so the length would just be 1/8" shorter.

I built one of these. It looks great thank you. How has the bench held up with it being supported by just pocket hole screws? That’s my only concern. Someone wants me to build them one I just don’t want them to have an issue. Thank you
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 3 года назад
It’s held up just fine! The shear weight of a screw like that is around 100 lbs. so four screws...100lbs each. It should hold up to a significant amount of weight being applied to the top.

Not to be that guy, but I would highly recommend that you wear some sort of dust mask (hearing protection too). Some woods are quite toxic, you can develop sensitivity and/or allergies to wood through exposure, and even without all that, your lungs aren’t designed to filter sawdust. I know two woodworkers who had to give up woodworking because they didn’t wear a dust mask and developed allergies. Sucks.
