Making a modern shoe rack bench to fix our overwhelming shoe problem. Brought to us by Squarespace. For 10% off your first purchase, go to: squarespace.com/makesomething
We've got a huge shoe problem piling up at our door. So today we're going to make a shoe bench with extra storage out of hickory wood slabs to fix our issue. This is one of those woodworking projects where we design and problem solve along the way. What we thought was going to be an easy project turned out to have some unexpected twists which forced us to be a bit more creative.

Thank you. Loved this vid and the Carlin clip. Love your positivity, even when things don't go right. Your videos always brighten my day. Greate Idea on handling the conduit problem. Definitely something I'll have to keep in mind.

When you said the piece wasn't wide enough for the top, I was expecting you to just cut it and add a walnut racing stripe in the middle. You blew my mind with the herringbone veneering - such a terrific look. I've said this before, but you could switch to making dresses and I'd still watch all your videos because I'm here for the entertainment value more than anything, but the fact I also get useful creator tips, woodworking skills and innovative solutions to problems (like a slab that ends up too short) is a joyous bonus. I look forward to these every week!

Alternatively, you could add removable drip trays underneath the bars to prevent water/snow melt/sand/mud from falling onto the shoes on the bottom shelf or onto the floor.

FYI: I had a similar problem finding the right drill bit for a pipe I wanted to fit. What I did was turn a piece of pipe into an improvised hole saw. and with a drill I widened the hole enough to fit the full pipe. 🙂

I've had an idea for a shoe organizer for a while but I just haven't had the time or the money to do it. It involves those cardboard tubes that you see when they make columns with at least 8 in diameter ones cut them to about the length of your shoe and make several rows that are offset of each other in their length. Arrangement like a pyramid or whatever you want then glue them together. Put a bench in casing them together on top.
