How to Build a Tamiya TT02 Chassis for Rally + Mods and Tips - Part 1

Welcome to this Tamiya TT-02 Chassis Build Guide, where I focus on the changes needed to enable this versatile chassis to perform better when running off road or rallying. My TT02 will eventually be a Subaru Impreza '99 Richard Burns replica rally car. So in this video I will show the subtle little mods and tips I've learned from previous builds. Most are very simple, common sense and cost-effective (i.e. free or very cheap!) but when added together make a big difference to off road running and the long life of the RC car. Here is a link to the supplier I use on eBay for the stainless hex screws. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181024489629
They are the cheapest I've found - about £3 for 50 M3x10mm button head screws! And a pack of 100 is only a few pence more. Free postage. They don't do packs for Tamiya kits, you just have to buy M3 screws of different lengths to match the length of the ones in the kit. I buy packs of 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 15mm screws and just use the Tamiya ones if any longer screws are needed.

I admire those who enjoy and take the time to build these kits. One thing that needs to be taught is HOW to "think" like the Tamiya people who designed and wrote up the instructions. Like learning to take a test you need to understand Tamiya think haha. I went in head first on a Tamiya Leopard tank and man was it a learning curve. No matter how great the exploded views/instructions there are ALWAYS these "WTH" angles that are impossible. I want to build their top shelf car but it looks like a mind meld and instant headache.

Hi there - I totally agree with you about learning to think "Tamiya" and it does take a few builds until it begins to feel natural! I bet a tank is a whole different ball game of complexity. I hope you do have a go at that top shelf car! Cheers!

I run a tt02 type s for racing (one for me and one for my son) but wanted a rally car for my daughter to practice with outdoors. Bought a tt02 with bearings on ebay for 50 quid and currently rebuilding as per your instruction Mark, as I see this as a capable and cheap fun rally car. Even better having two already as it means many of the type s spare sprue can be used if anything breaks

Very cool! 50 quid is a great price for that TT02, and yes it really is a capable rally car with a little tweaking! Good point about the spares as you get all of the basic TT02 parts along with the upgraded parts in the Type-S kit, they have come in useful for me too. Have fun! :))

The anti wear grease and gasket on the motor also prevent airflow through the motor. This causes it to RETAIN heat. Airflow through the motor will help to keep it cool without the need of external heat sinks!

Good point again! The gasket does also stop some of the heat from the motor from melting the plastic motor mount. If the air was allowed to pass through the plate, it would only be able to enter the gearbox and not be able to escape anyway! 😉👍

How good was this , exelent tips. After watching how good your rally cars go I'm just going to have to build one. We have all the Arrmas but these Tamiyas and Kyoshos are my favorite and very addictive.

Hello my friend! We can see that the school year has started, Professor Mark's classes have resumed! And once again it's a success. Thank you for sharing your experience. I admit that filling the holes with liquid glue is something that impressed me. . . nevertheless it is a radical way to get rid of the dust and other debris that we can collect during a rally. . . sometimes it's a real chore to clean our cars. I hope your first day at school went well. I'm already feeling very tired, but it's normal and I need to get back into the rhythm. The work with the mask is difficult, headaches come easily as well as an important thirst. . . as usual the teachers will adapt without flinching. I wish you the best, mon ami. Take care.

Thanks Mark! The D15 trick was a valuable tip. I’ll do that with my Motul Autech TT-02. I’m considering also trimming the lugs off the arms as well. The road version has very little travel. But I’ll run it first and see if it’s necessary as I think the arms look the same road and rally. But I’ll also inspect the TT-02B which are longer arms and check it out for any restrictive components and again the D15. Hope you are staying safe and well. Again thanks for sharing! 👍🤓🇦🇺

Hi Mark, this is a great tutorial, I wouldn’t have thought about using hot glue to fill gaps to prevent parts from seizing. Also using thicker grease in the diffs is a really smart. I always say you have a gift for teaching. I love watching your tutorials for tips but this one may inspire me to build a TT02. Yeah, hot glue is a good cheap way of blocking holes, plus the glue is pretty light so doesn't effect the balance too much. Very informative. Guess what, trimming off the “limiter” on rear lower suspension arm was exactly the thing I did to fix my ride height! I took my tt02 for rally once on the hills, and you’re right - dirts did get into the front steering parts and jam. Creative solution to use glue gun! Besides I also noticed that the dirt and grass got underneath the motor, wonder if that does damage to the motor though.

Hi Eric - thanks very much for your comment. Yeah, that little plastic "limiter" makes all the difference! Plus I was fed up of the dirt clogging up the steering, I have tried this method before and it really does work. Never had a problem with the motor, just sweep away the dirt with a brush after every run. Best regards, my friend! :-)

I think the TT02 might do the trick, I just finished doing the front suspension mods and got about another 10mm of clearance, so it's looking good! Nice tips Mark you really have been doing a lot of building this summer that hot glue trick is nice and it probably provides strength i use the antiwear in my diffs to😀👍👊💯

Nice video. I did similar steps on my TT-02 to modify it for rally. Instead of grease, I use silcone oil with 500 000 CPS in the front diff. Because of the better steer angle, you will be more safe when using CVDs in the front.

So, not to jam up your comment section, but yes getting into the hobby for the past 6 months has helped me get through some "more addictive" passtimes lets say. RC is teaching me to budget while having fun. So tamiya, yes, I have the rally 2cv to build and the smaller 1/12 rally yellow kit. Thanks to you sir, inspirational and educational!

Nice work Mark, I got to look at my steering I may have to do your mod on it if I have not done something with it already I know I did some front and rear a arm tweaks but don't think I did anything to the steering but the aluminum options for the rack and stuff.

Nice with the glue. I will do that.. But what I also done and do ist building fenders inside the body shell out of duct tape. Works very good against sand!

The Tamiya motor mount the prop shaft and the metal driveshafts are well worth the money and teamed with a firebolt 15t with high speed gear and 24t pinion.... currently fitted a differential lock block which is Tamiya and works a treat

@@MarkBryanRC it's really controllable need to sort out getting some proper Tamiya oil dampers as I have some aftermarket ones on at the moment and it's not letting me have any ground clearance... also need some sticky tires if you have any suggestions?

@@MavAuto-Pete Oh yes, the Tamiya Mini CVA dampers are excellent, that's what I have on mine. As for the tyres, depends what surface you are running on - I'm using Chinese knock-off copies of the Tamiya rally blocks, very soft and good on all surfaces! :)

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! Body now has all decals on, after your excellent videos on the bodywork, Mark. I thought this too went dandy, until I now realized I messed up big time on steps 14 and 16. I thought Tamiya had done a sloppy job making room for the screw heads of the MA1 (3+15 mm) that is used to attach the bumper. Now.... I thought arthritis had made me completely harmless these days, but apparently the Viking is still in me. Not only strong as one, but stoopid as Harald the Braindeadest. I was completely sober and still turned all four MA1 screws all the way in. Well into the differentials... 🤯🤬🤬👹🚙🗑

Hiya matey. Your video popped up just at the right time for me to settle down with a nice pint. I've got this IPA that is so strong and hoppy that it is nearly knocking my head off. Anyway great vid with some top tips. I had to stop it halfway and look at that steering bit that you trimmed. You know I don't even remember installing it but you are right, it is in the way! I will certainly have a look at trimming that. I think I've done the other bits. I had a whole tube of Tamiya anti wear grease from Japan before the fire but it's one of those things that got chucked out unfortunately. Luckily it does appear in some of the kits like this one. It's like gold dust isn't it? Don't think it's like anything you can buy from Halfords. Anyway very enjoyable mate. I've got the place to myself tonight as Saran is on nights. Need to find a movie with space ships in to watch! Hope you are all ok. Enjoy your evening mate 😀

Hey Mark, I have been watching your videos for months and I finally had the courage to get a TT02 Kit. I am building an Impreza 99 too. I noticed that the front suspension is a bit higher(2-3mm) and softer than the rear. Is this as designed for a Rally Car? I have followed all steps and cant figure out if I have done something wrong or not. I am not using the shocks that came with it, but some adjustable ones I got on ebay. Wondering if i should adjust the front ones to make it stiffer and reduce the travel a bit. Well done on all your videos. Amazing work. Cheers.

Hey, Gio! Thanks for the kind words, my friend! Well, I never built my TT-02 in stock form, just adapted it. Good to hear you got the Subaru '99, it's a great kit. The front is a bit lighter than the rear, due to the motor placement, so I think it will be good with a little softer suspension at the front. I wouldn't worry about it too much, try the chassis on a run and see if it bottoms-out on the rough - if so you can dial in a bit of preload on those shocks - it really is a matter of "suck it and see!" If you have any problems, let me know and we will see if we can work it out! All the best from Mark... and enjoy your awesome Tamiya rally car! :)

Once again Mark, very informative stuff for those wishing to go off road with this chassis. Very nicely done. Clear and concise. What did surprise me was those plastic diffs. In all the dozens and dozens of Tamiya's I've built over the years, every one ( that had diffs ) were metal. I always thought they were a generic, default component. I'm presuming here that Tamiya with progress, improved design and development have changed to plastic diffs in newer more cutting edge models, to make them better with improved performance. Is that right ? If not then is it a just a case of using lesser components to keep the cost of the kit down ? I'm just trying to work out why some diffs are metal and some plastic and why the change ? Anyway, great job and look forward to episode 2.

Hi mate. Cheers for the thoughtful comment and support. Yeah, most of the newer 4WD chassis (TT01, TT02, XV01 etc) have similar 4 planetary gear plastic diffs. There are metal hop-ups available, but very expensive. I think it is a cost saving thing, but luckily I can report that all of my cars with these diffs are trouble-free. TBH, plastics these days are are pretty good, and a tiny bit of flex in the material probably helps prevent chips and cracks in the gears. The only issues we have had is slipping bevel gears in the TT02B (the ones that drive the diff ring gears, fitted to the end of the centre propshaft). But hey, they are cheap as chips! I think the metal gears are only used on older models and high-end newer releases. Anyway, hope is all well with you, enjoy the Bank Holiday. :)

Hi and thanks for the comment, I'm pleased that you found my video useful! Sorry but I don't have any separate pictures of the modified D5. However, at 4.02 into the video, if you pause it you can see how much I cut off the part, it's just the very left and right of the part that I trimmed a couple of mm. Alternatively, you can just omit the D5, just don't fit it. The car will run just fine without it. :)

Hiya Dave - Yeah, definitely need a decent set of shocks on this one, but as you say, parts are hard to get at the moment :-/ When available, I recommend the Tamiya super mini CVA shocks for this chassis, they really suit the car and work better than some alloy shocks I have tried. I'm gonna steal the ones off my TT02D and fit them to this rally chassis so I can at least get a decent test run in! Thanks for the comment, all the best! :)

Great stuff - I wonder why such an illustrious firm as Tamiya still puts out models with these little design/manufacture flaws. Still, at least we have experienced Tamiya guys such as yourself to show us how to avoid the pitfalls. By the way, for a very open diff action I can recommend Vaseline Intensive Care lip balm - "I used "Rosy Lips" but they do an "Aloe Vera" version, on whose performance I can´t comment.

Hi Mark, I really like your videos. I am thinking about the best platform for a rally car. I don't necessarily need something ready to go as I like to build custom parts and make changes. Here is my dilemma. I am looking at several chassis, but I cannot take a decision on the best one. Option 1: I have a TT02 chassis with a few hop-ups, and the cheapest option would be to implement some of your suggestions and probably CVD front axle to increase steering performance. Option 2: go for a HPI RS4 creator edition and chop some parts to increase ride height plus longer suspensions advantage is the stock metal gearing. Option 3: Kyosho fazer mk2 kit. Suspension travel does not look like a problem, but expensive. Option 4: XV01 long damper kit, probably the best option but quite expensive and not sure about hop ups for the future, plus not sure if 3s lipo fits in case. thanks and greetings from Wiltshire.

Hello, Enrico. Thanks for the kind words. And you sure have a dilemma! I don't have any hands-on experience of the HPI or the Fazer Mk2, but they both look like fine cars, I really like the quality of the Kyosho RC's, and they look super cool too! I can recommend the XV-01 as a rally car, mine has been run very often and is standing up well, very reliable and a super handling chassis. I have had a lot of success with the TT02 Type-S as a rally car with a little suspension modification (only a little trimming of the front lower wishbones needed. It handles super-nice and has so many hop-ups included in the kit, I recommend you take a look - I have videos of the build and mods required if you are interested.It's pretty cheap and you don't need to buy any other hop-ups. As for the basic TT02, I have yet to see how it performs, but my friend's TT02 does perform quite well off road - but my Type-S is better! All the best and greetings from Birmingham. :)

According manual G2 comes to the bottom of the case and then 4 x G3 with cross. You put them first and then on the top of the case G2. Why? Any differences? Or may be in one - on the top in another on the bottom? Right?

I push the top G2 bevel gear into the 4 G3 planetary gears to ensure all gears are correctly aligned and meshing together. The Bottom G3 has to go into the case first and press the G3 planetary gears into it. I hope this makes sense my friend! :)

Hi Mark, I have the tt02 Monte Carlo kit and have upgraded to the 68t high speed spur gear. I'm confused on what pinion I need? I have a 17 and a 19. I fitted the 19t but I'm concerned about the gearing. What's your recommendation of pinion to use with the 68t kit and do I need a different motor mount than the standard kit one. Hope you can help. Hi Ren. I think you will be fine with the 19T pinion and the 68T spur. The 68T spur doesn't raise the gearing too much on its own, it really just gives you the option of running bigger pinions than the stock setup, and the pinions make much more of a difference to the gearing than the spur. I've got a TT02 with the high speed spur running a 22T pinion and it is fine with the Torque Tuned motor. The motor mount is also stock and no problems there, either! The only thing I'd recommend is fitting ball bearings and maybe a cheap motor heatsink with any speed upgrades you install. Cheers!

I did build 3 TT-02 so far and have some more to come, intresting enough i didnt remember the D5 part so i checked: The part was added later to the kits. There are at least 2 different manuals for the TT-02 (2013 and 2019), but i suppose there are at least 3. In the lower right corner of the manual front page you see an article number of the manual/chassis revision: My old one says "11053610", the new one says: "11053610-002". I could only spot 3 differences, one being the D-5 part (doesnt exist in the old manual). Another diffrence is the newer kit includes 4 plastic 12mm hexhubs and in the first lines of the japanese price list one says "2013" and one "2019" , as well as the prices have been raised. I wondered why the rc section wasnt changed, no mentioning of brushless and the picture shows the TEU-105BK esc while kits have been coming with the TBLE-02S, TBLE-04S and lately with the Dragstar 70A ESC (Hobbywing 1060 clone).

The front wheel hubs in plastic are very weak it is one of the first thing we change when racing for touring cars also the diff we put silicon shock fluid into it, the stuff that is like tar and only in the front diff the back is fine with normal grease.

Hi James, the chassis in this video is the standard TT02, it was the Tamiya Subaru 1999 kit. However, all the TT02 kits have almost exactly the same components. The TT02D is exactly the same as the kit in this video except it comes with upgraded parts, i.e. CVA oil shocks, metal ball bearings and a Sports Tuned motor and heatsink. You could use either kit to create this rally chassis, however the TT02D does not include rally tyres. You would need to buy them separately. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Hi - all the grease and oil you need is in the kit, but to complete the build you will need a crosshead screwdriver, a pair of small side-cutters for cutting the parts off the plastic trees and a pair of sharp scissors. A pair of small long nose pliers may also come in useful, with those in hand you should be ready to go! :)

BTW.... I know it's a matter of time.... But when you get the new Tamiya TC-01... PREPARE for INSANITY with that Body!!!! I just watched one of the more experienced Members of the Forum build one. COOL looking, but he had to cut out NINE separate pieces - including 4 voids in the middle of the main Body!! 😖😳 ...... He did mention that most 257mm WB Car Bodies will also fit the Chassis, which he was VERY impressed with.

@@MarkBryanRC The kit gives you the ability to get even more ground clearance and I will be using aluminum M3 rod ends to make the steering tighter. I also will place rods from the top of the front steering ball joint to the top of the diff housing to take the play out of that also. Have a great Xmas!

I am looking at buying either Toyota Yaris or Audi Quattro. Is it possible to buy Yaris then buy Audi body and put it on or the chassis length makes that impossible??

Hello - the chassis is the same for both bodies, so it should be possible to put the Audi Body on the Yaris chassis - I put my Audi body on the TT02 that I originally built for my Mitsubishi Evo body and it goes on just fine! :))

Well, yes the bodies both fit on the Type-S - but the body mounts on the Type-S are exactly the same as the stock TT02. The Type-S is basically the same chassis with different suspension parts - hope this is of help. :-)

Hi, sounds like you got some dirt or grit in the motor, best to take it out and run it in a pot of water, let it dry and oil the bushings. Should be good as new! :))

Yes the kit comes with the motor and ESC, but you need to buy a radio set with a servo and get a battery, then you are ready to run! :)

2 of the wider 12mm wheel hexes are included in the kit, but you need to find the longer wheel shafts to fit.

Yeah, spares are very hard to find at the moment - but TBH the TT02 drives really well in the standard width, especially if you have a stock rally body fitted, I think it adds to the realism! :)

@@MarkBryanRC yeah mines mostly stock just upgraded wheels and tires ,bearings and shocks have a high speed spur gear coming the little things fast off the bat but for my terrain It needed to be a bit modified

I have the tt01 suburu Mexico and my steering is like sticking I have no bloody idea why I pull it apart put it together it sticks could I have a stupid part of is it my putting together 🤔🤔

I would try to determine if it's the steering bridge, or the steering knuckles (where the axles turn. Disconnect the steering arms from the knuckles to find out, by turning each part individually by hand. Once you can locate the sticking part, you can rectify it! Good luck! :)

@@MarkBryanRC yeah it was the steering bridge thingo first time RC car lol first test drive went well little steering to fix pulled to left a little take off was awesome little love tap on front end and I lost asseleration got sterling left and right but no forward and backward asseleration 🤦🤦Il learn this stuff someway lol

What is the difference in the chassis between the tamiya tt02 rally and the tt02 D?

Hi - the chassis are the same. However, the TT02D comes with ball bearings and oil filled shocks.

Hi - for the best driving experience on rally terrain, I would recommend the type-s. This is because the suspension design is so much better than the standard TT02, plus it's a lot stronger. You do need to modify the front A-arms to give more travel - I have a video on how to do that if you are interested. Thanks for the question, I hope this helps!

Great! You won't be disappointed, it's a quality kit! Time Tunnel Models have them in stock for a good price. I've never tried a killer body, but I've heard good things about them. You might also want to look at the Tamiya body kit as a comparison. Those Lancia stickers are hard work! :)

I’m not going to be painting it white ans running it in rally spec colours, I’m going to custom paint it. But I do like how the standard shell comes cut out on the arches and the posts like in rob Brennan’s video

Hi - I had a look - the Tamiya part number is 51401. But I can't find it in stock in the UK. There are several from international sellers on eBay, but very expensive. Yep, I regularly use a LiPo with this car, just need to use a LiPo alarm! :))

No worries! Oh, you need to grease the moving parts, especially gears and bushings, they will wear away if you don't!

Because stones and twigs get caught in the chassis webbing and jam the steering! Then you can not steer the car until you remove the sticks or stones...

Hi - it's because I wanted to show how to get the best out of a standard rally car kit like this Subaru Impreza '99. I think this is how most people buy their TT02 rally cars. Plus I can't find a T chassis car from any of my preferred suppliers. Thanks for the comment! :)

Oh yeah, awesome tips for rally building. Part D15 is the most useless part on any Tamiya kits. Not sure why they started to use it, as the older TT-02 don't have them on the tree or in the manual. I never use it on any of mine. Can i send you an email ? i might have something for you.
