I. OVERVIEW 1. Perform the activity everyday 2. Habit forming takes times (18 to 254 days) 3. Willpower is limited (only take important decisions and work on them, more decisions you make less willpower you will have) 4. Build habits to become automatic in actions and lose no or less willpower when doing them II. PLANNING 1. Associate habit with something 'natural' that will happen (e.g. Walk after dinner, Brush after wake up) III. MONITORING / LOGGING 1. Log the streak daily and don't break it al least in the initial stage 2. Use pomodoro technique (25 mins focused work 5 mins break) and log the number of sessions you do 3. Do small and manageable changes to your habits 4. "Accurate monitoring helps determine whether a habit is worth the time, money or energy it consumes." - Gretchen Rubin IV. CONVENIENCE 1. e.g. If you want to learn guitar place it some where so that you can see it, take it and play it without much effort required V. SMART REWARDING 1. Create a positive feedback loop and nobody can stop you from making that habit.
Crazy finding this video post graduation. When I got my sh*t together this is literally what I did. Found an environment (campus library) started slowly increasing my studying intervals to the point where the library became my second home, literally. I became known to my friends at “the studious one” at the end of my career. For those that made it this far, some context; I was working full time and was a full time student. My days were 14hr days. Studying motivational vids like this became my study buddy. It’s now habitual. I created a routine. A routine just in time that saved me. I graduated in the spring of 2020. Time when a full blown pandemic was happening in the world. Sharing because I hope it inspires. Keep on the grind. You meet the right kind of people you need along the path.
I wanna cry right now. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am have been going about trying to help my son ALL WRONG! I found the reason for him to do his school work and homework. His "Reward!" I found a Manufacturing Engineering program at our local community college. I have direction for him now to see where all of it is going to take him! A million thanks for saving my son!
Plan your studying. Don't just say: "I wanna study today" or "I'm definitely gonan study!" Instead, Say "let's see, today I'll study from 12 pm to 3 pm, afterwards I'll take a 2 hours break for lunch and some rest. At 5pm I'll study to 7pm and then I'm don for the day." Ideally you want to write it down, so it becomes a physical proof of your determination.
This Video was simply AMAZING!!! The Ego Depletion is what i have been doing for so long and not realizing why I have no motivation to sit down and study after having done everything else.
Great video! I'm doing some retraining on how to study. The two gems I found in this were: 1) to find a study group based on my goals to be more social (how convenient) 2) is that the reward should reinforce the habit (I've been doing it all wrong)
I'm glad I found this video. THE FIRST PART CHANGE MY LIFE 💜 when woke up, I usually stare at my phone, spending a lots of hour ending being late at school. But after seing this I started to follow the first step, and I don't even look at my phone when I wake up, I went automatically to bathroom and brush my teeth. It's now become my habit. This seems easy but getting off your bed on the morning is the the most difficult thing you could do in the morning.
Just started by MBA degree. Before today I had a gap year after finishing my undergrad. So I needed this as a pick me up because this entire year I lost myself, pure lazy, purely demotivated, purely a pile of crap. I needed this video. (Although I’m down for cheat meals, they actually help)
I've just subscribed, quality content. I'm in mechanical engineering right now and I'm smart enough for it. My main problem is my laziness. It's quite a weird contrast being a driven person willing to become a serial entrepreneur and at the same time being a lazy ass. I was smart enough to become a technician in mechanical engineering without killing my bad habits, but university is another game.
You guys wanna make a telegram group or something? May be useful to have some social pressure or people to report to. Same boat here, I know I am capable but I am letgargic. The mind is willing but too content with the easy way out
1. A Crows Epistemology, 2. Epistemology, 3. Growing your Epistemology, 4. Omnivarious Epistemology, 5. etc. This is a very good and mentally and healthy video!
Great advices! I’m currently taking some university courses to upgrade my trade/craft certification, and one thing that I must absolutely do is, when I do homework/study is I have to act like I’m going to work; I need to get into the mode (can’t be in sweats), I need to be dressed, and showered like I’m literally going to work. And also, I set up my computer table like it’s an office (with printer, architect lamp, files, etc.).
I also did same thing for past 6 months. It is working idea. It really changes some things in me. I can get more time to focus on myself and doing so many things like reading, playing outside games, improving self habits and have become more productive than previously. Thank you .
I'm in highscool rn so this really helps. I'm passing all my classes but mostly get Cs and struggle most with maths and really just don't understand most topics. I know I can do better if I really try to but just can't find the motivation but if I want to continue studying law once I finish school. I really need to improve
Thanks so much for the "reinforcing" reward idea. I realized my rewards turned me away form the habits I've been trying to build, but couldn't figure out what to do instead. This helps a lot.
You have some great videos! It feels like I wade through so many useless "quick fixes" that don't really work. I like the fact that you laid it all out as a habit (which I think will create more consistent results over time), and I especially like how specific (and unique, yet practical) your tips were. Keep up the good work!
If you need to get stuff done but have 0 willpower left, something I also do is do something I know I would finish quickest. Not only will I feel more likely to do it, since it seems easier, it will also give me a sense of achievement because I managed to finish something. This replenishes my willpower. Repeat this with the other smaller tasks and viola, you've done 80% of the work already.
My personal experience: I had a hard time building a new study habit myself. So I asked my friends to track habits together through a mobile app (FYI if someone needs, the app called PingPal, only iOS version.) By giving thumbs up to each other's progress, we all get motivated to go beyond. Highly recommend this way! Either group support or peer pressure definitely can be willpower lol
TO ALL COMMENT READER Trust me when I say this I've been watching videos on this and related to this topic for years, and THIS videos is all you need, save some Time.
I’ve been use to not having to study and still getting A’s and B’s but as I’ve been going through my first year of high school I haven’t been able to do that. So thank you for helping me.
Instead of adding another pomodoro, add 2mins(or whatever amount of small increments) to each current pomodoro that you do per week/month. This way you will increase your focus & studying capacity without the strain of adding another large chunk of time to your routine.
I’ve been searching for this type of RU-vid channel for so long and now I found it. Thanks for creating these types of video. I really love it and support your hardworking.
I need to indulge in good study habits to improve in school .It seems I get distracted easy and loose focus but thanks for the encouraging words. This clip very helpful advice to me.
use it in moderation, extreme is always bad "stopping" will not actually help you, it'll increase your urge ive found that devoting time to disconnecting from social media for certain amount of hours per day has been working for me but i guess different things work for different people
Then don't study, no one can make you forcefully study. Focus on learning over studying and maybe you could do what 99% of people can't which is be an entrepreneur
I've decided in may to make my bed every morning. At first, it felt like a chore, but now, I barely care at all and I haven't forgotten to do it one single day. It's not much, but it feels great. :)
Hey guys, don't forget to follow me on instagram (@engineeringworth). There's a link in the description. I'm going to post pictures summarizing important concepts from my videos for those who don't always have the time to watch them :)! hope everyone is doing well! Also here are the time stamps for the video: 1. General Overview of Habits (0:43) 2. Step 1: Planning (1:48) 3. Step 2: Monitoring (3:40) 4. Step 3: Convenience (5:27) 5. Step 4: Smart Rewarding (6:57) 6. Final Example (8:14) 7. Conclusion (8:43)
I don't know who you are but seriously thanks for your videos. I don't know how I got here but I've watched some of your videos and each one's over learned something new and useful way more compared to other channels. I've learn it was (convenience) that I'm missing and too many tiny insignificant decision making breaking my will power.
*please keep me on the right track always.. I have to be consistent on my study habits in order to complete my undergraduate academic degree. life is too short to worry over stupid non-meaningful things and live and achieve your goals and get victory in your own competition in this life*
I promised myself that I'll watch a RU-vid video after a one hour study and did that but I was procrastinating by watching one by one Then I decided that I'll watch videos based studies like study with me or study vlog or study habits and after watching that I became more motivated to study more and more and now I learnt it's a good way to reward myself😇
Excellent. I especially like the double summary technique. You summarize/synthesize the contents of several thinkers and then at the end you summarize your video. Keep up the good work.
I'm actually happy that I watched one of your video it's a good help it's about quitting social media's even before I watch that video I want to really quit some of the social media's because I think it has a huge effect on me like Facebook it sometimes boost my self esteem but most of the time it made me really down thanks for the video it's a huge help God bless you and continue what you're doing😊
I just have a great memory and very good logical thinking abilities, but I don't really study and I should, I got 90+ in all my courses and then in math I decided to study more and do all the homework and I ended with a 100%. This goes to show that a good study habit can help.
Too nice of you bro...Please make a video regarding How to overcome any addiction. If you have made earlier please give me the link so that I can find it. Thanks and keep making good videos
Great content. For anyone who is interested in the research of ego depletion, recent study also shows that ego depletion depends on what your position to willpower is. Short story: If you have the belief that willpower is a limited resource, it will become one. If you belief, that it is not a limited resource, you will perform much better after the same exercise. Study is from Veronika Job, Carol S. Dweck, and Gregory M.Walton from Stanford University named: Ego Depletion-Is It All in Your Head? Implicit Theories About Willpower Affect Self-Regulation
i lost many good habits after a long illness, your video give me a lot of energy, I will try to do exercises again and study more to get in my dream university. thank you so much
I was an excellent student until my 17th birthday. I had 3 months summer holiday after finishing my exams at highschool. After those 3 months I lost my good habits, replaced them with bad habbits and failed many classes because of my laziness. My memories of the good years
hey I have a question. what do you do about distractions if the distraction is directly next to the thing you want to do. example: say you want to work on the computer, writing, drawing ect. but you also do most of your gaming or distractions there. how would you remove that distraction without spending money on a second computer (cause I can't afford that)
Just finished your videos and critical thinking and this- well done and thank you so much. I also appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these animations.
I know this is a very late comment but Try imagining you're parents HARDWORK And imagine how good youre interaction with them when you proved that you are smart.also building a goal for studying is good such as getting full score on test and don't be satisfied by passing Anyway don't aim at being a valedictorian first thing start building small goal first such as being atleast on top 10 in class or something This helped me a little And now I think it's time for me to get serious and grow up:) Also pls don't forget to enjoy you're *YOUTH* and build good memories Studying is not bad but too much will be very critical
If you were serious about getting and iPad or Surface, I was thinking the same and would tend to recommend an iPad Pro (for me the 9.7" is the suited size) with the pencil and take notes with Notability. I can link you a few videos about this setup for college use if you like
Rodrigo, glad to see you in the comments again and thanks for the support! I actually use the exact same set up as you haha! :) I've also heard good things about the Microsoft Surface, but I have never used one myself
For me, monitoring and convenience are often at odds, especially when I get busy. For personal stuff, I think it is more important that you have an intuitive positive feel about your process, than logging data and obsessing about results. Heresy, I know!
that's why my great study habit gone disappear really quickly when I further my study to country of 4 seasons. I never had summer break, or any school holiday longer than a month before that.
I really liked this video, thanks! Your pronunciation is great, I understood every single word. And it's also good that you don't rush when you speak, like this it's more likely for people to understand, and store the information they heard from you.
I really like the idea about the smart rewards! Always wanted to buy a Gibson Les Paul but never felt good enough to own one.. So now when I have practiced every day for 2 months in a row without missing a day I will reward myself with one!! Great video man, keep it up!
Great video as always. About the pomodoro tecnique, there's nothing wrong with it but pomodoro in Italian means tomato and when I realised I was looking at apples I.. I.. *triggered mode on*
This really was the only tip i ever needed, besidea the usual work hard and getting enough sleep. I should associate my rewards with my habits! I almost all the time buy a reward to motivate me to do something, but i never do. I guess that was the problem. It doesnt give me incentive to work harder. Thank you for the help!
great videos dude! I really enjoy watching them! keep it going!!! ;) just one thing: pomodoro in Italian means tomato, so why putting apples in the video? 😅😅
Rất cảm ơn người viết phụ đề Tiếng Việt để mình và những thằng không biết tiếng Anh như mình hiểu được video này. Rất cảm ơn! Ai thấy biết ơn thì hãy nhấn like giúp mình!
I can study alone but I cannot study more effective without any interactive someone or something. I need a robot or a friend that tells me if my answer was correct or incorrect. But, everytime these people appear, I seem to be more talkative leaving my study process... this will helo a lot for me.. thanks for the advice
Thank you for the idea and making me understand the mistake i made i wished to take an ipad pro for my studies but during this quarrentine and early quarrentine i have been into bad habits (other than studying a diversion ) but now before i buy it i will make sure i will loose that habit from now and to 30 day long streak i will posta comment exactly 30 days later if your project has helped me to work out or not thats for the help and support i suppose my test starts now
You might want to check out Charles Duhigg "The Power of Habit" - it deals with a lot of the points you mentioned and is quite an enjoyable and educational read.
I love your videos ❤️ but in this video I didn’t find applying these concepts to the study settings. Most of them are applied to weight loss. I’d love to see more applications on the study setting. Otherwise, your videos are super helpful💜
