Big Up ya self, my Caribbean bredren ✊🏿 its amazing what we are capable of once we find camaraderie that transcends superficial realms of race and class then we realize how much we have in common with one another.

It feels like some online leftists from anglophone countries are incredibly hostile to the suggestion that they should try to learn more languages than English seemingly not realizing that for basically the entire rest of the world being multilingual is the standard and that like in many countries, mostly in Europe, speaking English is literally a requirement. Like in Denmark you can't graduate high school without a good grasp of English and a second foreign language (usually German or French) and many university courses are in English.
@ruthydrawsalot8210

Also a lot of them don't want decolonize their mindset and aren't really leftist. More ppl need to work to be more understanding and understand that we just live in a racist society and seeing everything through just the lense of race, over simplifies a lot of issues. And stop being discriminatory and downtalking solidarity. I just remember that meme if how "woke" ppl are no different from racists. Cause they lack intersectionality and also think of stuff soully through the lense of race. And don't want to deconstruct race theory. Just wanna make it more "hospitable".

Unfortunately/fortunately for English speakers, because it is such a universally useful language and is taught as one of the primary second languages (so much so that you can’t graduate high school without it in Denmark), it’s possible for them to be lazy about learning other languages and still get by across the globe. Annoyingly, in the UK, because we have a tendency to not feel part of continental Europe, we are not immersed in European languages as much as our continental cousins. Most of our culture is on constant recycle from the USA.

@@AtheistEve Yeah the problem just is that they end up lacking insight into other cultures because they only ever see them from an English perspective. They can't actually read or listen to news from those countries unless it's from an English media source. I can read English, German, Swedish, Norwegian and some Chinese news to figure out what's going on in those countries but native English speakers can rarely do the same. This is especially a problem when it comes to for example South America where Americans who can't speak Spanish won't be able to understand what the general population is saying and can only understand the educated elite that speaks English. For any American leftist learning Spanish should be a priority but they often don't even realize that it matters. In fact if you suggest it they'll respond with hostility and I get that learning a language can be hard but it's not an impossible obstacle to overcome, it just takes some time. It basically becomes an echo chamber that reinforces imperialistic beliefs.

Whenever I think "people", I think about all humans, I see whole globe in my head unless "people" in a conversation are specified to be any particular group. I don't have national identity, not even cultural identity and I don't practice cult of the state. All these things really help me truly feel like I'm a part of ALL of humanity. Oftentimes when I talk about issues in other countries, people look at me surprised and ask "why do you care? it's in another country, not your problem". It's all an issue with mindset and that's what has to change first.

@@aboyade9 For many people the way I live seems like I lack identity. They think I'm no one. But my identity is strong and vivd, it's just composed of different things that people are afraid to let go of because they used them for years to build their own self-worth. I only identify based on adopted philosophies. I believe that philosophy is the most important thing in everyone's lives whether people realize it or not. Most humans don't really realize just how much philosophies impact everything around them in current historical era/ their country/ media but THAT'S the very core of everything we do and why we do anything at all.

Now that you make me think about it you're right, most people ignore what happens in other countries, apart from being a dick move because we are all a big family, it is so inconvenient because what happens in other countries also affects your place in the world, there is no individual separeted from society, we are a big organism, and each of us is like a cell in the human body, if the liver shuts down we need to care, ence its easy to ignore the other organs if everything is going well, at least that is the situation in first world

Some of my favourite people I've met during my journey as a Leftist have been through the internet - from India, Poland, America, Malaysia, Ireland, and more. It's genuinely been so comforting to know that there's so many of us, and so disheartening to know that we've largely not yet been able to build solidarity with each other outside maybe those one-on-one friendships (as valuable as they are). And it's perhaps most heartening to know that's changing, and people like you are giving resources on how it can change. Here's hoping the world can unite.

As a Haitian born American the last decade and a half of my life has been trying to disconnect me from my original language culture and history (came here when I was 3 y/o and much of what I can remember was unpleasant compared to my comfy yet exploited life here) sadly after today's news I doubt I'll ever be able to see my homeland again and I haven't since I left (I'm 20 now). Thank you for bringing me closer to anarchist politics N a more INTERNATIONAL perspective your work is not unnoticed or unimportant!!!

Thanks for this I've seen a few American leftists say that they felt internationalism was less relevant to them because the US is so big and has so much to fight within it. I was surprised to hear it given how demanding many are that the world understand US issues. The conversation came up when discussing the misuse of "antifa" given that its a widely understood term around the world, particularly Europe and somewhat distinct from being generally against fascism with its own history, and that the pronunciation is supposed to be accessible to many languages, as well as having various short songs and chants which aren't in English to cement the internationalist ties and history (a-anti-Anticapitalisa, etc) Anyway thanks again

I'm an american but not really an American and that sort of shit rly weirds me out. It's also weird that American is typically used to define people in the US exclusively and not like. Everyone in the Americas. For clarity regarding the above statement, as this might have muddied the waters, I live in the US.

I started learning Japanese mainly because I used to be really into anime and I was considering to stop learning because their isn't a very large solarpunk type community in Japan but now I'm motivated to help start movement and educate people with this skill I'm still working on. Thank you for making this video. I am autistic, so I usually have difficulties interacting even with people who share my own language and culture, but it is pretty clear that networking is key to accomplishing positive change. I'll definitely try, but will need some help along the way. On the plus, if/once I do learn more, I may be effective at sharing that knowledge with people who have similar struggles when it comes to socializing. I suppose everyone has a part to play.

Growing up in Louisiana, I know maybe about 100 words each of French and Spanish. I can put together a few sentences in each, at best. Mainly how to politely ask for someone who speaks English. I've always wanted to learn both languages proper, but it's so much harder as an adult. I should have been taught both in school, given how many people I knew who spoke either Spanish or French-Creole! But that's US school systems for you. I suppose I need to buckle down and finally make the effort to learn them both for real myself!

you should combine learning another language with listening to music in that language. Makes it a lot easier and more fun and you'd get to explore the culture a little bit. I listen to a lot off different languages in music and if you'd heard a song 10 times and you look up the translation it's a lot easier to actually learn the words because you allready memorise them phoneticly. Also if you listen to the music during your day you can study a language while doing other stuff. Might make your otherwise not very meaningfull day a bit more interesting. On the jobsites i work at i try to greet and say stuff to the workers that speak a different language to practice but also to break the linguistic segregation.

I think reinvigorating the Esperanto movement within leftist spaces would also be really good. People can prove to themselves that they are capable of learning a new language through this simplified mix of different languages. It can be a gateway to learning other languages more effectively and serving as a lingua franca in its own right.
