This is a perfect video for shed doors I want to install on the side of a covered patio. If you are still monitoring comments I have one question. When you test hang the door and measure the gap between the door and the shed frame why is there even a gap? It seems to me the door should be flush without spacers. Did I miss something in the video? Thanks
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 2 года назад
Hi Aaron - I wanted the gap (the one I set with a paint stirring stick) because as temperature and humidity levels fluctuate, the door will naturally expand/shrink slightly. If you have a perfectly tight fit, when the door expands it'll bow/buckle or possibly cause damage to the rest of the structure. In other words: Those are expansion gaps. Thanks for watching, and good luck with your doors!
@aaronkrongard6239
@aaronkrongard6239 2 года назад
@@AmplifyDIY Thank you, I do understand the need for the gap and why my question was misunderstood. What I don't understand is why there is any gap based on the construction of the doors. When you used the pipe clamp to hold the door against the shed frame there was a gap about the thickness of the paint stirrer. My question is why? Not why there should be a gap but why the door is not flush with the shed frame with the pipe clamp holding it in place. What is creating that gap without the use of shims? Thank you.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 2 года назад
@@aaronkrongard6239 Aah - apologies for the misunderstanding. If you look carefully at the 9:00 mark as I'm placing the shims on the concrete pad to provide the lower gap, you may notice that the framing of the door opening extends out wider than the trim on the outside of the shed. Elsewhere in the video there are a few shots of the doors before I painted them showing that the trim on the doors overhangs just a bit. I did all of this intentionally so that when the 2x4 "internal" frame of the door is just touching the 2x4 frame of the shed wall, there would be that 1/4" or so gap between all the trim pieces. 2x4's are less prone to expansion due to environmental changes, but the trim and inner skin is more likely to expand, so I wanted space for that to occur. I also made sure that the inner 2x4 frames of the doors did not touch each other at the center in the gap between the 2 doors, so that if there was expansion of the frames, nothing would buckle. I took this into account with the overlaps of the trim on those edges as well. Make sense?
@aaronkrongard6239

@@AmplifyDIY Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I will view your video again (and again) before starting my project. I intend on putting a sweep on the bottom of the door to try and keep pests out as well as some weather stripping around the perimeter and closure if possible. The project is so I have winter storage for my Harley :) .

How many hours of work did it take?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 3 года назад
Hi Dan - I didn't track my hours, but this took a few months to finish. However, I was only working a few evenings a week for 2-3 hours at a time, and maybe 8 hours over the weekends. Plus, filming always makes things take 3 times longer than just doing the job. If I were to build this shed again without filming, I'd estimate it'd take probably 7 - 10 full days of work, start to finish. Thanks for watching!

Have you had any problem with rain getting under the doors since there is a gap? Or did you add any type of threshold or weatherstripping?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
No, I have not had any problem with water ingress at the lower gap of the doors. The overhang above helps a lot, and we don't have much driven rain here (i.e., rain that falls diagonally). However, if you live in an area that gets heavy rain or windy rain, then adding a door sweep (as well as a slight taper to the floor at the door thresholds if you are doing a concrete slab) is a good idea.

@AmplifyDIY

Thing is: the way these doors are built, they each way about 150lbs, and are really difficult to move/carry/not get squished by. If a thief *really* wants to go to the trouble of removing the doors just to steal my 12 year old lawnmower, well… have at it, I guess. What I’m saying is that in my case security was not a great concern during construction as I don’t store anything of value in there. Your situation may vary of course, and you may want to install higher security hinges, a better handle, stronger lock, security cameras, guard dogs, laser guided missles, and / or a panzer division. :-) Thanks for watching!

These are great doors, very heavy to be sure, beautiful shed, really a shame to call it a shed. I would call this an out building or storage building, it’s that nice. I have to make new doors on my high wall “barn” shed to replace the metal skinned standard doors. I have a few questions; 1. Did you consider making 1/2x1/2 lap joints for the 4 corners of the frames using pocket holes into the sides of the frame as opposed to the end caps? 2. Did you consider using cedar 2x4 over pine 2x4? (Cedar cuts down on the weight is why I’m asking), 3. I might have missed it, but did you add or have a “drip” trim header over the top of the doorways to prevent rain or moisture working its way between the trim and door panels? (I have one now, not sure if it is worth having one over the new doors), 4. Did you use any type of weather striping at the bottom and around the doors? (You have concrete flooring [nice] my shed is elevated and has 3/4” pressure treated plywood flooring, and we have little critters in the country that like to make their homes in warm sheds during the cold winters, so I need something to keep these little guys from coming in), 5. What was the thickness of the inner door panels? (I missed it, I think). Thoughts? Again, really beautiful out building.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
Hi Duane - great questions! 1) I didn't put a ton of thought into the specific joint construction. I'm sure lap joints would work just great. 2) In retrospect, probably cedar would have been a little better choice - not only because it is lighter, but also because it resists rot. 3) I did add a drip edge under the window, which is directly above the doors. I have not had any issues with moisture anywhere in this shed (er, outbuilding :-) but I'll keep my eye on it. If I do see any signs of water getting into the doors, I'll add another drip edge to the top of the upper door jamb. 4) I did not add any weather stripping around the doors or under them. I don't have much of a problem with critters anywhere in my yard or house, but again I'll keep my eye on it and add stripping / door sweeps as needed. 5) The inner door panels are 1/2" (er, 9/16"? 17/32" Whatever the closest common measurement is that is sold at big box stores) OSB. Strong, cheap, and readily available. Thanks for the questions - I'm happy to answer any others you may have. Good luck with your doors!

Nice work! a couple pointers though.. Why is one exterior door finished with the panelling similar to the siding while the other door is just smooth finished? Also, those diagonal braces you installed are most functional if installed diagonally from bottom to top with the bottom side being the side close to the hinge. This prevents sagging well. Installing a diagonal brace from hinge corner at the top does not work nearly as well to hold up the weight of the door.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 5 лет назад
I'm not sure what you mean about the different finishes on the door - the exterior side of the doors (all 4 of them) are done with paneling/trim. The interior is smooth OSB (again, on all 4). Perhaps that was not clear in the video? As for the bracing: I agree, and if I ever build doors like these again I'll brace them internally that way. Thanks for watching!

Inspiring video, however since you were putting extra effort for security with the locks inside, isn't there a concern about the hinges being on the outside. Anyone can get in the shed by simply unscrewing and removing the hinges?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 2 года назад
Hi Daniel - The locks inside are less about securing the stuff and more about locking one of the doors in place so that the latch on the other door will work to hold that door closed. You are right, of course, that anyone who really wants to steal my lawnmower, christmas decorations, and sleeping bags can just unscrew the hinges, and lift the VERY heavy doors right out of the way. If your specific installation needs a higher level of security, choose a different hinge system that can be hidden inside the door jamb. Thanks for watching!

@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 5 лет назад
I may not have shown this very well in the video - sorry! I did measure carefully from the top of the door to determine the correct height to install each hinge - but that's all you really need to measure. From there, just center the pin in the hinge right over the gap at the edge of the door and screw it in. As long as all 3 hinges are lined up along the edge of the door evenly, you'll be fine. Thanks for watching!

@mdeamicis
@mdeamicis 4 года назад
Pretty good for not knowing how to do it. It's a lot easier to cut the sheet good to the size of the door. You are guaranteed one square corner and the rest is easy to get right. Then you screw thru the back into 1 inch thick trim boards that are on the front. you use the same trim on the wall and screw the hinges to the trim. To square the door you lay ot out on level ground and make the top flush and square with quarter inch gaps top and bottom, then screw 2x4s across a few inches from top to bottom to hold it square. Hang a 2x4 or whatever across the bottom of the opening with the top where you want the bottom of the door to sit. With hinges already on the door, screw it to the shed. Now you attach a trim board behind one side and you have that light gap you were worried about all covered. Much easier and much cheaper to build this way. You did an awesome job though.

I definitely don't want to go with a wood door. I made it out of wood 35 years ago and don't want to deal with the painting and wood rot. My plan at this point is to go with wide PVC boards assembled and screwed together. I am unaware of any PVC-like sheets that I could use, but would like to know if such a material exists.

I've got to make some new shed doors this summer. Think I will go with half laps at the corners of the doors. You would be surprised how easy they are to do! And very strong. Nice build! I think that you could have also saved some weight by using 1X4 instead of 2X4 for the basic frame. Has the weight of the doors been a problem at all for you or do you see an advantage to the 2X4 frame? Thanks for your reply!
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
Hi Terry! The only time the weight has been an issue was during the install. I had to have my son help me carry them from the garage to the shed, and help with the install. You are right, these doors are heavy! But they are very strong, and don’t blow open or closed easily in a breeze. Going with 1x4 for the frame would likely save some weight, but the inner and outer skins are heavier than the inner frame by a long ways. I wanted these doors to be as strong as possible and not prone to warping, so I went with 2x4’s. Good luck with yours!

What was the outcome of your angle wood experiment? Do you prefer one method over the other?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
All 4 doors are holding their shape perfectly. I don't think it really matters which direction you go with the angles, or what specific pattern you use on the interior of doors like this. Just make sure you do have some sort of diagonal bracing to keep the doors from sagging under their own weight. Great question!

@@AmplifyDIY This guy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_sH6v5B76Mg.html didn't use an angle board, and he "toe-screwed" his frames together. I'm building new doors (48" opening) and I just don't want saggy / rubbing doors on my shed. What do you think of his technique?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
I checked out his technique - those doors will 100% sag in a few years, especially in an area with lots of rain. If you are concerned about the doors sagging/warping over time, you should definitely consider some sort of diagonal bracing. In his design, he placed a single cross-member about halfway up the door. If instead you placed a diagonal cross member from the upper outer corner to the lower inner corner on each door you would not have to worry about the doors sagging. Here is more info: tp69.blog/2018/12/31/the-best-way-to-brace-a-wooden-door-or-gate/ Good luck!

What the top frame gas’s part I believe I need too bc the roof is slanted down a bit and the door won’t open out only inward bc of the roof

I am curious about how weather-tight these doors are. I live in a rainy area, and I'm puzzled about how to keep rain out after I cut a hole in the end of my shop building...??
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 5 лет назад
If you need weather-tight, these doors will need the addition of some weather stripping all around their outside edges, and a sweep attached to the bottom. You can pick up suitable weather stripping at your local home center - it comes in long rolls with an adhesive back. Just roll out the right length to match the edge of the door, cut the stripping, and stick it to the inner edge of the door so it will get compressed into the gap at the door edge. I don't have a tutorial for installing door stripping and a sweep, but I'm sure if you search here on RU-vid there are some. Good luck!

Great video. Plenty of details, but you didn't dwell on anything, moved right along. The pace was fast, but that's why we have pause and replay. I believe you meant "belt and suspenders", not "pants and suspenders". Wouldn't want to forget them pants - ;^).

I just had a Tuff Shed built, and looks great, but the double doors appear to have a 1/4" space around the frame, and wood is exposed. worried this will cause water damage, is there an easy way to weather strip the frame? thanks for your video
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
Both my local Lowes and Home Depot have a variety of different kinds of peel and stick weatherstripping in various thicknesses and lengths. I'd check there to see if they have something that will work. Good luck!

my husband has a shed built, and the siding is the same as the house, we have a steel door on the shed, and my husband had to buy put a new lock, this other one gave him so much trouble, that he had a neighbor unlock the door, so he went down the hardware store to buy another round handle lock. we have trouble with that one, it worked a few times and now this one won't open. we called a locksmith, still waiting for him to call us

If you don't have pipe clamps, ratchet straps are also easy to use for squaring/leveling things up. Even works on walls when framing.

When drilling into end grain, you can drill a hole for a large diameter dowel perpendicular to your screw. Put a little glue on the dowel and then you aren't relying on end grain for you screw attachment.

Looks great Amp! Why did you use two half pieces of siding material for the face of your doors rather than one whole piece? It seems to me one piece would have made the doors stronger.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
That was the only size available in the style I needed to match my house. You’re right: a larger single piece would have been both stronger and easier to work with. Thanks for watching!
