Ever thought about how to build a folding bed in your camper van? This video shows our DIY van bed build in our Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 van conversion. The bed is a folding design, sized to fit a twin sized mattress. We did this because it is relatively easy to find a tri-fold mattress for an affordable price, compared to buying custom pieces of foam. The bed folds up into a couch and the mattress stays on the whole time.
The design for the folding bed was inspired by so called “rock and roll” style beds used in factory conversions.
This is the second episode in our 4x4 Delica van conversion series! The van we are using is a 1998 Mitsubishi Delica, originally built in Japan. It is the L400 model with a V6 Gasoline engine, 4x4, locking rear differentials for better off-road performance and plenty of room in the back for our conversion! We also have a large metal roof rack and ladder that will allow us to carry more cargo.

As far as having a clear view out the back,…. School buses, city buses, box trucks, cut away vans, semi trucks, pick ups towing travel trailers and fifth wheels, 12 passenger nissan nv3500s, 15 passenger Ford transits, all cargo vans without rear windows,…they all have no visibility out the inside back of their vehicle. Upgrade to tow mirrors (a flat and convex mirror on each side) and learn to use them and you won’t need to worry about it. Also,… invest in a reverse cam ($50 on Amazon) and that will help tremendously with backing.

Suggest a locking pin to keep the bedbench from sliding. If unit is upright it may unfold during a quick stop or rough road

Thank you very much for this!! This helps me with the how-to of what I am hoping to do. This is the kind of bed I want, but I don’t want tri-fold, I want a quad-fold so when it is in couch mode you have a couch in both the interior living space and also one facing out the rear hatch to comfortably enjoy the view of your travels. Although I have two vans to build out,… one to sleep two people and one to sleep one, so that mattress may be helpful. If I buy two and cut a 12 inch strip off of each then adhere then together then I have three 24 inch mattresses.

Solid plywood under a mattress in a van is a mold issue. Ventilation under the mattress is critical. Lots of condensation in a van with two people in it.For your health and safety research this topic. Best wishes to you both.

Thanks so much for this suggestion! We were actually planning to put some holes in the plywood, but time got away from us! We plan to do that eventually, so far so good with good ventilation we haven’t had much trouble yet. Certainly beats the sailboat in that regard, much smaller space to keep warm and dry!

I’m just wondering if lack of ventilation is going to cause a problem with mold? If you are just using it for short outings I would suggest taking the mattress out of the van when finished. Condensation is a big enemy of mattresses. It’s the warm air of your body and the cool or cold of the surface below it. I have seen people who build their own beds for long term use put holes in the bed frame and also include a moisture barrier such as “Savy Rest bed rug” and “Hyper Vent Air Flow Moisture Barrier.” Don’t know if you can get either of them in your area and you may be able to get away with just removing the mattress if this is for short term but $170 is a lot to lose to mold. Really great bed frame though!!

I have the same build I did out of scraps wood from a old build and a 3 fold tumbling mat I got at the resale shop for $5. Nice job... I have a 08 Chrysler Town and country It comes with a built-in power 150wattt inverter for 110volt and a in the wall rechargeable flashlight and a rear DVD system. I love van camping in it. You can find them for 3k anywhere on the 🇺🇸.

Mark has a good tip. Also you can take a tool called a hole saw and put some evenly spaced holes in that ply for ventilation. Just like blue moon you need to prevent condensation. I still believe this will be a beautiful second or third home : ) oh this is also pop's old boats.

Might want to add a two inches piece in the front of your frame to lift the front a bit so that you can ‘slide” into the SOFA mode of youbed and feel well planted as you sit…you can put a piece on a bender that you can lift up so that you are snug sitting and then take it down when you sleep….i love your simple bed, but that is what i would do…great vid…

Oh to be young enough that a bed that narrow can sleep 2 ❤️😊. I'm on to my 4th conversion now and thinking I'll be using a similar design this time around - but wider. What would you change about it now that you've been on it for a few months? Nice build. A tad over engineered I'd say but better that way than the other.

I made the same mistake as you..., I used the wheel arch to determin the height of the bed, but when the bed was finished, I could no longer sit up straight coz I forgot about the the thickness of the bed frame with the Mattresse on it !!!
