My first time decorating this last few weeks - knew nothing before and learnt it all from your videos. Thank you - saved me a lot of money and made it quite enjoyable to get a job done which I'm quite proud of.
Sizing the walls used to be done with cow glue that left a sheen on the walls. When you hung your paper the water in the paste would reactivate the size and the two would dry together, even though the primary reason for sizing was to kill suction and create slip. Using a thinned out version of the wallpaper paste as size later became an acceptable practical alternative - but using pva as a size can be risky as it can dry like a skin, not reactivate and mix with the paste on the paper and even pull off the wall. Those cheap snapoff blades are thinner and less likely to drag than stanley blades, though for me scissors are best everytime. Good to see someone using a chalk line to start off lining paper - I was surprised at some of the so-called professional videos not understanding the need on lining paper. For anyone reading, if you don't use a chalk line to hang your first piece on each wall, then it may look like it is hung in a straight line to the eye, but the edge will probably waiver in and out 5mm or more. That means every piece of paper you hang on that wall you will have to make it waiver in and out to match that first piece. Use a chalk line to create a straight line for your first piece and the rest of the wall will be straight.
Looks great. Thanks for showing how you trim with a knife. I note that you prefer to use scissors with finished paper. That makes me feel a bit better as I have given up trying to use a knife on finished paper as I always tear it. If I'm using lining paper in the future, I'll have another go with a knife.
Good vid. I’m surprised you don’t use a normal 9” roller though for pasting, medium pile, super quick and I find I get more of an even coverage. It will definitely help with your elbow as well.
I know the feeling well I had the same, cortisone wore off in 3 months but for me acupuncture worked and I never had it again hope this can help you . Retired Bricklayer
Yes horrible pain and weakness thankfully I have recovered okay... but have reduced how mush heavy stuff I do with my arms repetitive work holding things... rollers on render did me.. thanks
Sorry to hear about the elbow, very painful, I know from experience. Obviously everyone's an expert on here (plenty of advice for you! 😁) but I found ultrasound treatment on the scar tissue and massage on the tight muscles given by my physio was very helpful. Good luck pal 👍🏻
If your painting the wall up and down is fine. Even if you butt doing it horizontally the paper slips down Under no circumstances as you say overlap. I always leave a gap and fill with pollyfilla the quick set tube. Othe readymixed falls out
Well I listened to myself and applied 2 further coats of paint and there is no longer a problem, I had covered the wall with what I thought was a heavy coat of paint, but obviously not now that problem is sorted onto the next project 👍🏻
Sorry about that some comments I miss replying... thought I'd replied but usually caulk is a big no for filling gaps in paper... usually put first coat on then fill using powder filler mixed with some paint.. we call this a hard stop filler.
Following your advice I hung an anaglypta coral pattern RD995 and it looked great, only there were some small gaps which I filled using caulking and it blended in seamlessly, that was until I painted it and at certain angles you could see the caulking, which appeared as a thin line. Is there anything I can do to rectify this the colour of the paint was wheat I've given it 2 coats! Should I give it another pass maybe covering the caulking with a heavy coat? I would be grateful for any advise you have, thank you for your time
Hi, great channel. Thank you for the way you explain everything in detail. I've learnt so much. I was wondering if you could help me with a job I've just completed. I used lining paper (grade 1400) to help with the imperfections on the walls. The room had been rewired so I filled the channels with plaster and a finishing plaster (easyfill). Before papering I treated the walls with a watered down pva. Once the lining paper was completely dry I applied the first coat of paint just as you've described by adding a small amount of water. I then let the paint to dry for 4hrs (following the manufacturers spec of 2-4hrs). I was extremely happy with the result so far untill I finished the second coat. Bubbles started appear and some of the paper seems to have come away especially over the new plastered sections. Also the paint seems to be darker in sections! There's no heating in the room and maybe the paint hasn't dried completely yet but it's had 12hrs so far! I'd really appreciate your feedback so I can rectify these issues. Many thanks, Mark.
It would have been more helpful if you'd told me about double pasting heavier grade lining paper a week ago and before I had to discover it for myself! Heavy grade paper really does suck in the paste if only done once. Great video again.
Sorry, I’m really late to your videos. How long would you leave before emulsioning. I was told water based paint can reactivate the paste causing the paper to lift off the walls
Sorry to hear about your tendonitis. Very painful. I suffered from it years ago. I did find that regular immersions of my elbow (mornings and evenings) in very hot water helped a lot.
The tennis elbow that I suffered from was caused by playing squash. Fortunately, I made a complete recovery. The way I was cured may not be relevant to your tendonitis but I'll quickly go through it just in case it may help you. 1) Morning and evening immersions in very hot water as already mentioned. 2) Winding tape around the racket handle to make it larger and therefore forcing me to change my grip on the handle. 3) Making a conscious effort not to grip the handle of the racket too tightly. The other thing that may help you is to use a smaller pasting brush. I realise this may slow you down but it may help. Hope some or all of this helps. Cheers, Mark.
How did you manage to paste the top & bottom edges of the paper and avoid paste on the table without moving the edge nearest you away from the edge of the table?? - (at least I didn't notice you move it?!).
Im about to line paper my livingroom before painting. 3 out of the 4 walls are long with no windows etc so I will go horizontal like this. The 4th wall has a door and large window which leaves 3 areas needing paper. Each area is only around 80cm wide so thinking going vertical with these bits... Is this adviced or should i keep it all horizontal??
@@PaintingandDecorating Thanks for your reply. Yeh , just read on a forum if painting you can go vertical. Might just do every wall vertical as might be easier for the me with shorter pieces being my first time.
Good video, i will ask you something. I have an old house that my father in law constructed, all walls are in cement (concret) and are just painting over the cement, the walls are very roaf too. Can i use lining paper 1200 or 1400 and paste direct over the wals or not ? The second question is about painting, whats the best paint typ to paint over the lining paper ? The last question is about the type of lining paper, there are several types or the brand and type is not very important?, Sorry for my bad English, thanks. Antonio Portugal
sorry for my late reply hope your job went okay... so many questions some slip by.... depending on how rough you mean rough... no. textured wallpaper would be better for rough walls... hides more imperfections.... you can get some thick insulating lining paper and special adhesive ... good for cold walls and will smooth them... expensive.. we have videos on it.. and for paint most paints will be okay to go over lining paper...
Had some problems with a 1700 grade lining paper on a hall stairs and landing. All looked fine at first, No overlaps. First coat then fill with easy sand polycell. Couple of seams had overlapped in the centre of two strips of paper..Could this be due to dry seams? I had to cut out the overlapps and fill again.
Can depend on what lining paper you used normal or fiber lining. Normal lining is easy to manipulate over the uneven surface of the wall. Other than that it's down to poor application.
Thank you very much for your answer .And i would like to ask you ,i had holes around the window and i filled them with silicone ,do you think that i will be able to hang lining paper as well there(any problem with glue ) ? Many thanks
My elbows are starting to give me gip also, though I think cortisone is really only a quick fix and can do damage to bone stuff in the long run, seen new titanium elbows on eBay, but the skitters don't post to N Ireland, lolll So back to the awful pain, lol, good job
took on board with advice from my family and you know, it is interesting the dairy thing that worked for yourself, thank God good man It worked for you are what would we do,lolll x .mind you made an appointment... 4 WEEKS TO SEE MY GP@@PaintingandDecorating
@@2010gtoner I've had both elbows ulnar nerve entrapment ops, seam to have worked well. Also one injection for golfers elbow and two injections for tennis elbow. But I like painting everything has settled down for me at the minute. Hope you get yourself sorted.
It's a customer my dad got years ago and she was happy for me to work for her when my dad retired. Sadly she went to better suited accommodation as she was unable to get about. So the house was empty and was being sold.
I have a six foot mark bend back at that.. then measure the rest with the tape. Every room and measurement can be different it needs to be marked every inch if your going to mark it stick to my tape. Every finish paper I line my bench first then add six foot mark.
Paste is not made for sealing although it would help stop paste absorbing off the wallpaper. Size is very old school and it's harder to use because you need to mix it with boiling water and it stinks. PVA diluted does a far better job quicker to use.
im finding using my bosh spray gun with 1:4 ratio is working amazing! done in 5 mins over 3 walls, do the second coat once first is done or after any other plaster touchups@@PaintingandDecorating only used 3x 500mm mixes all over these 3 walls ( medium bedroom) too. i know the first coat had doen its job when teh 2nd was runing off after not so much sprey as it wasnt absorbing.
Hello, For tendonitis, you can use CBD oil for pains. Is from cannabis and is medical proved to work. You csn try 5% strenght from Holland and Barrett. Hope it will help!
Nice video.... But why does a young fella like you work in feet and inches? I'm 62 and have been using cm and meters since 1971 when my junior school took away our wooden imperial rulers and gave us plastic metric rulers😂
Why do you still wear biv n brace? I am a painter/decorator of more than 30 yra experience & wear englebert strauss trousers, so much nicer to work with & more freedom to stretch when painting ceilings, cutting in tops of walls, paperhanging & so on, would never go back to bib n brace , the straps used to dig into shoulders or clips would snap on straps 😡
In back pocket lol , i very rarely use a paperhanging brush tbh , only on textured papers, lincrusta ( very rarely ) or delicate papers , more of a snap off knife / muraspec board man
