I am having my roof done soon. This is out of my comfort zone and was filling me with dread. Your presentation has put me at ease made feel that it's going to be all right. Thanks!
I used to Roof with my Daddy here in TX back in the late 70' & 80's. $1400 for a large roof. I live in a single wide trailer & my landlord got a quote for this trailer to just shingle over the top of the shingles that are already on & the Estimate was $15,000! WTF? I need to get back into roofing again. Just hire a group of guys & I'll let them do all the work
Good job at explaining, Paw Paw. Only thing I do different is I use the cut offs from one end to start the another course making for the stagger as opposed to using on the ridge.
Thank you! I need a new roof and I have a hip roof. I have been wanting to figure out what materials I need and how much it will cost. Now I know how to measure it. Thanks for making it simple and helping me get started on planning it.
Your video is great, and the audio was nice and clear. I enjoyed the math lesson, I had a hard time with algebra so I took business math. But the way you explained it, even I could understand it. Also this video is the first I have seen from you. Personally, I think the video is Great. Thanks.
Even though I know how to calculate the things you're teaching in your videos, I don't find it boring. I find it entertaining because I know I'm not going to be the guy crawling around on that roof or pouring that slab. Been there. Done that. LOL
If I think of anything I will let you know. Its great how you review tools and all. And love your inventions. keep up the good work, I will keep watching, have to try to remember to hit the like button. And I am originally from New Jersey transplanted to Vinemont, Alabama 7 months ago ,so 20 degrees isnt so bad for me. Keep up the great videos
How do you do it with dimensional shingles and then the can't cut the tab out of a shingle so you have to buy the caps to make the ridge cap right or am I wrong bob ?? Help me out on this one please thanks cliff
You explained that well, great video. Though this is off topic but I'm replacing rotted ridge caps with some Owen's hip and ridge cap shingles, aside from the last shingle, is it as easy as just buying a pack of Owen's hip and ridge shingles and correctly nailing them down? Some people I've seen actually first apply an narrow underlayment strip along the ridge first, is that just extra protection or is it needed?
When I roof a house, I let top of the topmost horizontal run flop over onto the other side both times. This gives me two layers over the sharp peak and when I attach the ridge cap, it is actually 4 layers thick. I have never used underlayment. I don't see the need when you have two layers of shingles covering every square inch.
@@DoingItCheap You're absolutely correct, there's a flop going over the top ridge (though some are cracked/split, most are ok). Hope it's ok if I ask another question - After removing the rotted ridge shingles I now have nails sticking up in rows of 2 (from the old ridge hip shingles) about 1 inch along the whole ridge, though I might be stating the obvious, but would the best solution to be to hammer them in and cover them with some Henry's?
Great video!! Would have to add make sure you measure the roof and not the house. Most houses have an overhang and if you do not get that number you will be short. Now that would seem pretty logical for those of us that grown up in the south but I have meet a lot of people that would measure the house. Mostly in California but a few back in the south. Like my daddy use to say "You ask a stupid question you get a stupid answer". And come on people their are stupid questions. Like if you see someone running you don't ask "What are you doing?" You see what they are doing. You should ask "Why are you running?" Will I need to get out of this rabbit hole, but again great video I will subscribe to see more of them in the future.
The only variable would be in hip roofs because of the ridge cap that runs from the peak down to the corner of the house. The area covered does not change because the slope is steep or shallow.
Bethel College? My father was the engineer for WHDM for many years. Seems like you are from my neck of the woods. I graduated from Jackson State (not Mississippi) and Memphis State (Herff) a few years before you.
Paw Paw, I put on a steel roof, with edges and facia, ad the supplier needs to watch your video, since he couldn't get it right. No more shingles for this guy cause I scared of going on the roof anymore
I prefer a metal roof.....look at all the 100 year old barns still standing !!! But the math still applies for estimating cost by knowing the square footage.
Mr paw paw question I see some I don't know if I'm right so for get fast if I have dhis 1388 sqf so we can said is 14 square of shingles that means 39 bundles ,,now if I have 284 square feet is goint to be 3 square of shingles that mean 9 bundles right because when is thousand just take 2 numbers on the left side and when is hundreds just take one number on the left do I'm right.
Not totally understanding your math, but it is 3 bundles for each 100 square feet....BUT look at the packaging. Some of these more modern shingles may cover less than 33.3 square feet per bundle.
Thank you so much ,I just see alot things in diferent ways it work for me ,I try to make it easier possible for me ,I love math but sheesh drive me nuts sometimes lol.
I NEED YOUR EXPERTISE!! Please help! Is there a way I can send you a problem to solve? It’s calculating amount of drywall of rectangular room. I’m new to this all. PLEASE HELP!
Paw Paw, On the hip roof you forgot the first upside layer around the base of the roof. The 60 x 28 should be about another 176 SqFt. I figure about 15% waste on a hip roof because of all the odd angle cutoffs at the hip angle when I get the shingles. As you said, if you don't open them they will take them back. I usually will keep 2 bundles in case I have to make a repair to the roof in the future. This way I always have the same color and style for the repair even though they are usually a bit brighter that ones on the roof, they will be the right type. David
I have found that what I cut off the right will work on the left. Also when I figure a square foot per linear foot on the ridge cap I am fudging as well because the ridge cap covers 15 inches instead of 12 per shingle. Plus I round up a lot. But I bet neither you nor I would have to make an extra trip to the store !!! LOL !!!!
Remember, I did this for the homeowner, not the contractor. The homeowner has the time to fool with the odd cutoffs to try to make them work on the other side. Plus with all those cutoffs, we might not even open ONE bundle for ridge caps.
