How To Calibrate A Hygrometer:
One of the most important things to do to ensure that you're properly looking after your cigars is to calibrate your hygrometer.
Our of the box, the simplest cigar hygrometers can wildly vary with nearly 10% inaccuracy.
If your hygrometer is inaccurate, you're effectively flying blind with no real basis for ensuring your cigars are stored in the right environment.
For instance, if the humidity is reading too low, you'll try to increase it by adding more gels or packs, which could over-humidify your cigars.
Conversely, if it's reading too high, you may try to dry out the interior and end up ruining your cigars.
Either way, a calibrated hygrometer is vital.
Boveda offer highly accurate calibration kits, which allow you to properly calibrate your hygrometer.
Using a special solution of a special salt in a two-way membrane, these small pouches maintain a specific and accurate level of humidity.
Two packs are available, which come in either 75% or 32% humidity and are accurate to 0.3% RH. This is much higher than the usual humidity packs that use a mix of salts.
By leaving your hygrometer in one of these pouches for 24 hours, you will be able to see what your hygrometer reads. You will then be able to adjust your analogue or digital hygrometer to be properly calibrated at the humidity in that bag.
If you own a Boveda Smart Sensor, you can even do a 2-step calibration process, this makes it even more accurate as the calibration kit is exposed to different ranges over two 24-hour periods.
However, using the calibration kit is not exclusive to Boveda's smart sensor and you can use it with any hygrometer.
A common method is to use a soda cap of salt mixed with water, which is added to a zip lock bag with your hygrometer. However, Boveda have studied this in their lab and due to the different salts available on the market, you can have as much as a 10% variance. Therefore, this "tried-and-tested" method isn't very accurate.
