How To: Campfire Builds and Layouts

Let's get this fire going.
MATERIALS
Tinder: Any material that lights easily and burns quickly. Some examples are dry grass, newspaper, toilet paper rolls and twine.
Kindling: Thin pieces of dry wood that will help build your fire. Softwoods like cedar are a great choice for kindling.
Fuel Wood: Larger and more dense pieces of wood that will keep your fire going. Hardwoods like oak, maple and elm will keep your fire burning for a longer time.
Fire Pit: Clear a small area so that it is just dirt. You can add some rocks around it for maintenance and protection.
LAYOUTS
Teepee: With this layout, you'll get things heated quickly. Arrange the wood in a cone shape with your flame in the center.
Log Cabin : Lay your wood in square frames and stack them on top of each other. Your flame will burn in the open center. This layout burns with a steady heat and is great for cooking.
Upsidedown: Stack layers on top of each other with no spaces in the middle. Make the layers smaller as you build up. Lay your tinder on top of the stack so you can have the flame at the top. The fire will burn down slowly to prove a long heat.
Lean-To: If there is too much wind, a Lean-To fire will help you keep your flame alive. Place one log horizontally on the ground, then and arrange smaller pieces of wood against it at an angle. This creates a shelter for the fire to burn.
Star: The star method involves arranging wood in a star-like pattern. leaving a gap at the center for air circulation. It's effective for creating a long-lasting fire and can be useful for cooking.

In the Boy Scout troop I was in the 80s, we learned how to make one of the best firestarters I've ever used. You take a cardboard egg carton and fill the cups with a mixture of melted paraffin and sawdust/wood chips. You could break off a couple to pack along on the weekend camping trips. They lit easily, burned steadily for a decent amount of time. Even if the wood was wet (NOT green), it could dry it enough to get it started burning.

Instead of sawdust/wood chips we would use dryer lint. When you watch the linit ignite you quickly realize why you want to keep your dryer clean

When I was in the Scouts (British, not American), we were taught to use the teepee method for fires, but I always used the log-cabin layout and mine always ended up with the tallest flame. And this is in a country where dampness is basically guaranteed!

The star method is how we make a fire for cooking in Nigeria. We rarely go camping but the information is really appreciated 👍👍👍

i dont understand the benefit of the star method. why is this method better for cooking than other methods?
@keonyegwachieshulammite3107
@keonyegwachieshulammite3107 3 месяца назад
@@vincentvega5686 the logs are aligned at the ends so they burn slowly yet the flame is strong. You can do a lot of cooking using a few logs of wood. So I think it has to do with minimizing how much wood is needed to cook a meal for the whole family. And families are usually large over here.

Loved this! Could you also make a video about how to maintain the fire with each layout? Some less seasoned campers might be surprised when their teepee layout collapses once the kindling burns longer, for example. Or that we're supposed to keep pushing the logs from the star layout inwards as it burns.

Great information, thank you for sharing! I also want to mention one of my current favorites: the V fire! Basically just lay the ends of 5 or 6 largish pieces of wood on each other in an alternating pattern in a V shape (kind of like just 2 walls of a log cabin) and then you put the tinder and kindling where the walls meet. I like the balance of shelter, airflow, and heat reflection that it provides!

Though ... She might have explained why to clear the place/area before making the fire pit and what to do to extuinguish your fire thoroughly . I've seen trees burning due to the humus burning/slumbering underneath the fire pit ( extending for several meters) when everybody thought the campfire was extinguished . A fire pit is made on solid soil or rock , by any doubt moisture the direct area around the pit before starting a fire .

While in college I worked summers with a good friend at a farm they owned in northern n wisconsin. No animals on the place except a bumper crop of ticks and biting insects. We had one mandatory task, , cut enough firewood to last until next summer. The farmhouse had a beautiful stone fireplace that we enjoyed every night. We often mad what we called a kick fire, a fire with a large back log and a fire built in the middle of it with logs radiating out from the fire. It was called a kick fire cause to feed it during the night all you had to do was kick the logs further in to the fire. Your star fire made me think of it, think half that shape with a back log and in a fireplace, not a fire pit.

Having lived with a wood stove for 3 years of my life at one point, using it everyday, the Upside Down Fire Layout was 100% the best starting configuration I came across so long as I started laying down smaller wood first and moved to larger pieces...so I guess you would call it a Rightside Up Fire Layout? Whenever I started with larger pieces laid over the two large chunks on the side, it was slower to catch. But if I started with smaller pieces first, it would start much faster. I would also put some newspaper (or waxed cardboard ftw) between the two pieces of large wood before putting my sticks over that.

Remember, kids, stones can, do, and will absorb moisture! Pick rocks that have been wet or in rivers because those will explode more easily when the fire heats them! And always insert an extra syllable into "kindling" because mispronouncing words is how language changes and evoles! Yay!
