I’ve watched hundreds and hundreds of taxidermy videos of so many different people and you’re by far the most real and down to earth guy I’ve watched. I’ve learned so much from you and I appreciate that! Will you please make a video on you fleshing, trimming, salting, and tanning the hide before the mounting process?? You’re amazing buddy!
Thanks so much. I learned 100% from RU-vid videos and trial and error, and that was a common problem for me. I couldn't find anyone that could just "tell me what to do"! I am going to do a finishing video on the deer I made the mounting video with. I will also do a fleshing video ASAP. I've had several ask about this, so it's coming in the next week or so!
@@thecedarridgechronicles I really appreciate it man! It’s always been my dream to do taxidermy and I’m finally taking that leap of faith! Hopefully one day I’d love to meet you!
I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the single most helpful resource I've found for learning taxidermy! I remember always feeling like taxidermy was totally out of reach for me, and now it's something I'm excited to get started with. Just seeing the whole process up close makes me realize how much of it I'm already pretty well familiar with from all the other type of crafts I've worked on. Seriously, thanks for putting this together and sharing your skills!
I especially loved watching this video! The combination of your gifts of artistic perfection using modeling clay and paints; the humility, simplicity, and honesty of your instructional audio delivery; and the technical information and video detail regarding comfortable use of the specific needle being used were interesting and informative. Beautiful work!
I am a new taxidermist, and your videos are so down to earth and make me more comfortable. Especially just starting, excellent resource. Please keep these up! I appreciate that you list what works best for you and what products.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Good practical advice without a bunch of nonsense theory. Also like that you show the raw footage. Always leaves you to wonder how much goes into it on an edited video, as most will cut out the time-consuming parts. Thanks for putting this together!
Great videos. I'm at a video/ RU-vid taught taxidermist also. Started 2009 still going strong. Getting better woth every mount. Again your videos are great
Man I Appreciate the shout out for the logo! My way of saying thanks for taking time out of your day to make these Taxidermy videos. Much Respect for you. Thanks again
I loved this video man great job in teaching and showing EVERYTHING i know it makes videos long but I hate when they explain then jump to complete you really make me wanna go out and try and mount deer heads lol. I will definitely try my first buck thanks again man keep up the great teaching videos
I like to taxidermy smaller critters and I've always wanted to do a deer. Inspite of all the youtube and CDs I've watched i was always a little apprehensive to do one. After watching your method I will be without a doubt mounting a deer ! Love your style and videos, keep up the great work !!
I taught school for 27 years and want to get into taxidermy and you have given me the confidence your teaching abilities are super fantastic you connect with every single person that watches your videos in such a way that you make us all feel very confident thank you for being you
Thank you! I spent 25 years as a meat market manager and taught dozens of teenagers how to cut meat. I learned real quick I had to explain every detail, sometimes more than once lol!
It’s like Hank hill is showing me how to mount a deer and I’m here for it. Maybe that’s why I’m so captivated by it and so attentive. So definitely not a bad thing 😂
This video has me convinced I could do this, idk if I’d say I have talent or I have a mind that has an eye for doing things. But I’ve picked up on a lot of things people have done for years and done really good for the first time I’ve done it usually.
If I didn't know better, I'd say that buck was case skinned from his ankles to his elbows. They sure did leave you a lot to work with there. He looks AMAZING by the way. Thanks for sharing!
Love it. I watch ypur vids to pick up new ideas. I do my eyes exactly like you do but added one item. I dremel a few small holes in the mannequin eye sockets ( while i have the tool in my hand drilling out the tear ducts) if there is any excess clay on the back of the eye it will push into these holes. Also adds a little more grip strength to hold the eye in place. Great work Cedar Ridge💪!
Really enjoyed your video. I watched several of your videoes and subcribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I hope you are going to make video of all the finish work on the deer you mounted in this video. Again thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Really like your videos although I personally would like to see a video on the stitching. That is a detail that most videos I have watched fast forward through. I am getting ready to do my first mount and your videos are the most detailed and down to earth and give me the most confidence that I can do it too.
Enjoyed the videos you make and how down to earth and simple you keep them. I would love to see how you flesh the face and do the final painting. I just mount my own and for family and friends. Thanks again
I love watching different methods and saw a few things I may try, I liked how clean and easy clay made the ears go, however I'm wondering if they break easy? I use bondo and reinforce with a few screws incase the mount should fall or some idiot handle it by the ears.
I've repaired several racks of deer I had done that fell off folks walls and so far so good lol! I use earliners, so really the only clay is the small amount rebuilding the butts. The skin tightens up so much when it dries, it would definitely take a blow hard enough to break the ear clean off. What I need to do is make a durability video...
I’m planning on learning how to do this from your videos. This is my very first video I saw of yours, so I hope you have other ones as well.. I’m going to go look for other ones..
Obviously not your first rodeo!! Lol. Beautiful work and quick. Lots of hours learning the anatomy of the animals in order to assemble and make it look real. Keep up the good work. Very interesting.
Yes I could have, but if you max out the cape it won’t hold the detail because as it dries it will try and drum. I always order my forms based on the green cape measurements fresh off the head. Once the cape is tanned and shaved it should be at least a size larger than the original measurements. This will give you a cleaner stitch and muscle detail while maintaining the original size of the deer when it was harvested
Firstly, I love your work. It's a real art, and I think it's super cool. I'm going to try and mount a stag if the tan goes well. I was wondering what the main reason for shaving the hide down is? I'm guess for a better stretch and being able to see muscle tone? I was told to get it down to 2 or 3mm thick, but I'm not sure how I'll go bcoz I don't have a shaver or anything like that. Cheers🤙
The thinning helps with detail, really makes stretching easier and most importantly, the thinner the hide, the less the shrinkage as it dries. I didn't shave until several months ago, so you can get it thin with a scalpel, just keep an eye on it daily as it dries and make adjustments necessary if the cape tries to move 👍
Enjoyed the information. Scrolled through your catalog and did not see any videos of you removing the hide from a deer after being brought in. Have you ever uploaded one?
Thanks for the the video great detail. Just learning. And fixing to attempt first shoulder mount. Is there a supply shop in Alabama for buying your stuff. If not how do you keep shipping cost down. Paid over 110$ shipping for 1 manikin and chemical supplies, ears, eyes and few small tools.
Thank you for your videos I really am learning a lot from you. Maybe I missed it but I have watched this a few times and I did not see you make a final set to the ears and adjust the clay to form the muscle in the ear butt. If you’re looking for ideas for content I would love to see that in detail. Additionally, do you do any brushing to the hide and if so when? Thanks I’m advance!!!!
Awesome videos. Think I've watched them all, some 3 times. Few questions (I'd that's ok) after tanning do you habe to rehydrate or wet down the hide before mounting? I'm assuming that even though you measure for the right form you test fit a few different times? Does any lose skin shrink during the drying process before finish work? Thanks
The cape is wet after tanning, so it actually has to be slightly dried rather than rehydrated. You want it damp to accept the hide paste correctly. I will test fit before gluing to make sure I don't have to trim or alter a form since each deer is slightly different, even with the same measurements. And yes, the skin will shrink back some as it loses its moisture.
So in your process you don’t pin anything down while mount is drying? I have seen guys use T pins, foam with pins or staples in muscle detail lines. Do have to stretch every cape before mounting or just few? I know I have been asking a lot of questions. Really enjoy the videos keep them coming.
I'm fixing to do my first deer mount. I have a ?. The cape has been split all the way down the back. Would it be best to dry fit and sew cape before mounting? Thank you.
Just subscribed. First time I've ever watched it seen your channel. 1st off thank you for taking the time to film this.ok.so i have 6 shoulder mounts.ive always been fascinated with taxadermy. As I've gotten older i really am wanting to learn. I want to do it for myself. I defintly have the patients. Just did not really know where to start. This video is giving me hope. My question is. How do you tan your hides? And where would i get the clay& forms& glue ect... Thank you very much for your knowledge and time. Just a great educational video. From arkansas
I order most everything from McKenzie taxidermy supply, but I also have links in descriptions of many of my videos for cheaper options through Amazon. Check out my taxidermy playlist and I have several videos on fleshing, salting, pickling, neutralizing, and tanning capes.
"I didn't eat glue as a kid, but I might start now as an adult" One of the most inspirational quotes I've heard👏 Also great video! I want to start getting in to taxidermy soon!
I've never seen the cape wrapped around like that on a wall ped. I always cut them off at the edge and use rock making material and put deer tracks through it and paint it up.
What form and eyes did you use for this mount? Also am just like everyone else that have responded to your videos. I have watched hundreds of videos and actually did a Whitetail class a few months ago. Everyone that are making these videos always forgot to tell us the materials that they are using. I think that’s about as important as the mount itself. Thanks
Some I do, pro 1 hide paste will stick to nearly anything, but if they have a bad sheen to them from the molding process I will rough off the coating to get better adhesion
Scroll through my "taxidermy" playlist and you will find all kinds of tips also. I'm am working on some more in depth videos now about how to do specific parts of a mount
I'd like to be a hobby taxidermist, but I'm unconfident about it. I'm a beginner hunter and I want to mount some animals. I think I can handle a squirrel, but I'm unconfident about doing a deer or a bear shoulder mount.

I have several different videos that show each specific part of the process, but right now I am working on a complete mounting video, start to finish that should be up in a few weeks also. All the way from tanning to painting🤙
I used Bondo for a while when I was learning because that's what people did, but found it unnecessary for my purposes. The main reason for using Bondo is to make the skull cap sit correctly on top of the form. Occasionally I will have to Bondo if too much of the cap was removed prior to me receiving the deer, but when I cut off the cap myself, I cut to have extra, and hand trim to fit the form just before mounting. The cap, clay, screws, and dried cape after it is finished provide more than enough strength. Long story short, I think a lot of things are done a certain way because that's how they have always been done, and there's just not that many folks that teach taxidermy, therefore it's nearly all the same to a point. Not really right nor wrong, but if the anatomy is correct, the mount is properly put together to last, and the customer is happy, that makes a good deer mount.
@@thecedarridgechronicles thanks for the detailed reply.. for some reason, taxidermist are usually reluctant to help others. Not that their not friendly, a lot of them just don’t want to freely give out their secrets,, thanks for all the info.
Thank you! I have done a few in the past but all I do now is deer. They are my favorite and it allows me to take more of them since ii use the same process and supplies every day.
@@thecedarridgechronicles u definitely have the deer mounts down pat love the casual attitude true Master at in.wld love to see bird mounting video it looks really hard.
