Lol, first time watching you. Great minds think alike. Hubby made me a lanyard a few years ago. He just made him one last night for our cenote trip next week. Also, we have used a collapsible cooler for about 15 years. Started with one from thirty-one. Now, we use a gecko brand cooler. Works great for both of our camera gears. I carry the cooler, he carries all of our dive gear.

Man you got this camera biz down. I love your content and tutorials. I really like your lanyard and clip system for beach diving. Where can I get those clips with the short nylon bibs on them to attach to BCD and camera tray? Will this system work with a compact system. Greta idea. Also what kind of rope do you use for the lanyard and at what length? I’m pretty fresh to underwater photography/ videography. I love all these tips man and thank you.

Hi, I have some links to a couple lanyards with clips in the video description. Did you try those? There is also links to the rope. I used rock climbing cordelette, but any quality rope should do.

Cooler bag is a must always. So nice on the boat. Also keep dome cover on. Protection in/out of the boat. Crew may bump dome accidentally.

Really good point - the dome cover is essential. When I had nice new domes I'd take the cover in the water with me and put it back on before handing up the camera. Now it's so scratched I just wait until back on the boat, lol. But essential nonetheless.

Great Video Brent !! love your channel keep going. Where can I buy those two clips attached to your BCD where they are simple without the coil attached to it as I couldn't find it any where most of the sellers selling it with attached Spring Coiled Lanyard? So I just need two male clips attached to the strobe arm ball, and the ring I use to connect a lanyard to my BC.

Hi Khalid - thanks for the kind words! I purchased those two clips at a local hardware store and then made the rope lanyard. Coiled lanyards are a great solution if you like the security of having your camera attached at all times. That said, you could set up the coiled lanyard in such a way that it can be unclipped completely from the camera or BCD using bolt snaps or other solutions.

Hey Grant, great video. Also liked the one about the Retra Flashes, that I just purchased. A question to that. Where would you mount accessories like the snoot or disfusers while diving and for easy clip on/off?

Hi! Glad that you decided to buy a Retra Flash - they're great! I usually carry extra accessories on a double bolt-snap clip on my BC. I walk with them on a waist D-ring, but then clip them to a shoulder d-ring once settling into macro shooting (since anything clipped to the waist might drag on the sand/reef). The bolt snap is nice because you can clip whatever you take off the flash onto the bolt snap as you mount what was on it to the flash. Hope that makes sense! Lots of great info here Brent! Love the videos! I do a lot of shore diving and love the beach clip idea for getting my gear from my car to the water. Once in the water do you keep the beach clips connected to your BC for the duration of the dive? Or do you switch to a different system while diving? Thanks!

Hi David - Thanks for the kind words! I keep the camera clipped to my BCD until I've descended and comfortable. Then I unclip it from both sides and hold it (not attached). Most divers would opt for one standard clip that detaches, and then the other clip as part of a coiled lanyard to ensure the camera stays attached to the BCD while offering full movement. great video! I'm particularly curious on how you may attach the Sealife flex tray setup to your BCD? Is it possible to loop a lanyard through the opening where you can adjust the mounting screw? How would you attach that same rope lanyard system to the flextray? Thanks

Hi - Yes, you can loop a lanyard through the slot / hole in the tray. If there is no space there, then you could loop the lanyard around the tray by the base of the handle. This could still come off over the light/strobe, but would work if you're careful. Or you could loop the lanyard around the tray and base of the grip in such a way that it will not move, then clip the lanyard to that secure point. I hope this helps!

Thanks for all of your videos. I am also interested in seeing the HOW-TO video. I have a single strobe attached to a single set of ULCS arms which limits placement of a lanyard to some extent.

Gary Strek Thanks Gary, I appreciate that. Yes, will definitely make the video on how to make a DIY lanyard. For your system, you should be able to use a regular coil/bungee lanyard connected to the ULCS tray.The lanyard would need to attach to the arms at some point that makes the system easy to set down.

@@BrentDurand I don't trust the coil as I've had one break. I took the two ends each with a clip and bolt snap, cut off the broken coil sections and tied in a loop of bungee with fisherman knots. The bolt snaps go into the bottom of the tray for a hand down. During the dive I take off one of the bolt snaps and attach it to a d-ring. I can clip each end together to shorten the bungee loop for beach entries, similar to what you do but with a smaller rig (Sony a6000 in SeaFrog housing and standard port). As you and others have done, I use a soft cooler (AO Coolers) for transport and storage on the boat. Can also fill it with fresh water to soak the camera. Always looking for new and better ideas!

Thanks for the great videos Brent. This one was especially helpful as I just got my first housing for my Canon and was really curious how others transport their rigs to and from.dive sites. Right now I'm trying to make a harness from rope and carabiners like yours. I browsed through your channel but didn't see a video about that. Did you ever end up making one for that? Nice video! I love the idea of the beach clips. I do a lot of shore dives here so I think I might give it a try. My only question is, do you worry about scratching the transparent side of the housing against your BCD? Mainly for divers who use Jacket style BCDs. Not so much for backplate divers. Thank you

Hi pampigwo - That's a really good question and is definitely an issue. I've used a number of solutions depending on BCDs, but the bottom line is to stop the housing back from rubbing. You can put a t-shirt or cut a piece of wetsuit and tie it between the housing and BCD while you walk to the water. You can also hold the housing a bit while walking until you're at the water and ready to enter (minimizing rub). My current (backplate) setup uses a simple can coozie with bottom cut out that slides over my buckle (*note: this must be removed before entering the water so you can safely operate your buckle at all times). I've even put tape on the back of my housing to help. Anyways, the the best answer here is just to get creative with a system that you can remove for safety just before entering the water.

Hi Eliel - Thanks! In simplest terms, the best method is to clip the camera system to your BC so that you have both hands free to safely deploy the SMB. The other trick here is to make sure you camera isn't buoyant and floating up where your arms need to operate. Deploying the actual SMB can be done in a number of ways, so I imagine if I made a video there would be a lot of critique by those who do it slightly differently (this is life on the internet!!).

Cooler bag for the win. I’m still rocking action cameras though. I found beer cookies slid over the camera housings nicely to protect them out of the water. I totally agree that the rings don’t last. I would be scared to trust the two plastic clips with a rig like that. I’m old school though, I like bolt snaps. I like the simple rope lanyard you made. All the camera manufacturers are so overpriced. Great video thanks!!!

Thanks Caleb - I agree with everything here! I actually use wrist sweat bands as GoPro covers, so we're thinking alike! I use a beer coozie over my metal BC belt buckle to prevent the camera from rubbing on it during long walks mounted to my chest. Action cameras are great - it all comes down to the camera operator and editor, not the camera!

Maybe a dumb question, but when you have your lanyard attached to the strobe arms for carrying, what do you do with it in the water? Great videos by the way, I have learned tons!

Hi Karl - that's a great question, since you can't extend the arms out with the lanyard across the top. Usually I clip one of the mini-caribiners to the other and clip the lanyard on one arm out of the way. You could also clip one to the other and then clip the lanyard off on your BC, although people will say you'll die due to the entanglement hazard of the carabiner (now attached to your BC). Making your lanyard with bolt snaps and clipping off to your BC will make it safer in theory. Hope this helps!

Hi Luis, Yes, I'd recommend Monterey if you're in the San Francisco area. The Breakwater is a classic dive site that's easy to navigate while all the local dive shops offer guides who can show you a variety of other dive sites, including Point Lobos and Monastery Beach. If you have a long weekend, then it would be worth it to think about driving south to Santa Barbara or Ventura in order to dive the northern Channel Islands. Hope this helps!

I bought that cooler, It's cheap around $85. But it ripped very easily. went with the Polar Bear Coolers 48 Pack Original Nylon Soft Cooler. much tougher liner. holds water well.

Excellent. It all comes down to personal preference and diving habits. In defense of the AO Cooler brand, my bag and many I've seen through the years are strong after many hundreds of tough California dives. My zippered pouch corroded long ago though, as most zippers do with a little salt water.

Hi MisterBenne - Thanks for the feedback. As you say, a number of housing manufacturers (but not all) offer a plate that attaches between the handle and ball mount with a hole that can be used for lanyard attachment (and a third ball mount with Nauticam). Ultralight Control Systems even makes 3rd party plates for this. These work well with a short lanyard that uses small pin anchor shackles. Many divers, myself included, find that longer lanyards can get in the way of operating camera levers (e.g. zoom knob and image playback on the left; and shutter, AF-ON and others on the right). Using those holes just comes down to personal preference!

Your Gates housing should have a handle you can attach, right? Usually it looks like a bike grip or Ultralight Control Systems handle. I would use that over a lanyard.

(Please show how to do all of the knots you use in the video including the knots for the line you use in place of the key rings). Do you use a bungee or rope for the lanyard and the rings replacing the metal key rings?

How do safely deploy dsmb with a large underwater housing (like the one in this video)?

Hi John - the safest way to deploy an SMB would be to clip the camera system away from your hands so that you can set up and release the SMB using two hands. Camera systems like this should be nearly neutrally buoyant (depending on preferences), so it's not an inconvenience to clip it off while hovering in place. It's also not common for divers to deploy their own SMBs on typical dive vacations since the guides do that, so we're talking about the rare case of separating from the group, getting lost, etc.

@@BrentDurand Here on the southeast coast of Florida (Jupiter, Palm Beach, etc.) all the dives are drift dives. Guides often hook to a reef to see something. Or swim into the current to stay on top of a reef or wreck. So we get separated more than usual for a variety of reasons. :(

Nice video! Anyone found the "beach clips" we can see at 4:18 (rubber ones)? I can only find metal clips :(

Hi Gabriel - Glad you're interested in this setup. I customized the clips I'm using for beach diving. Here is the basic lanyard: amzn.to/2E5Apn0 I removed the lanyard portion and also the metal ring and plastic clip. I then used thin rope to create the loops that attach to my BCD and that loop to the handles on the camera. Hope this answers the question.

I appreciate the feedback - not sure I understand though. A caribiner clipped to a strobe arm can cause death? Would love to discuss since “you don’t know what you don’t know.” Many thanks

Hey @@BrentDurand, did not mean to offend... Generally in DIR/GUE disapprove very strongly on using any kind of carabiner in SCUBA. They easily can hook on to something unintentionally or just fail and worst case the can be "hooks of death". That's why only bolt snaps and/or knots should be used for attachments. I enjoyed your video, I'm struggling sometimes to find a good way to rig my camera, specially at night, choppy water and current can make it very challenging to handle a big camera, specially getting on/off a boat can get stressful.

mattvish Hi Matt, thanks for this reply (YT randomly delivers notifications and I never caught it). In principal that is what I figured. Guess there’s always the possibility (which is why rock climbers attach quickdraws in a specific orientation). A bolt snap would be the alternative, although it’s heavier hardware. An alternate solution would be to never attach the carabiner to your person so you can always let go in case of emergency. I would definitely recommend a lanyard of some sort for the situation you described. That and tighten down the strobe arms against your housing so it’s a small and solid until less likely to get smacked on the side of a rocking boat or pole.

Man you got this camera biz down🤙. I love your content and tutorials. I really like your lanyard and clip system for beach diving. Where can I get those clips with the short nylon bibs on them to attach to BCD and camera tray? Will this system work with a compact system. Greta idea. Also what kind of rope do you use for the lanyard and at what length? I’m pretty fresh to underwater photography/ videography. I love all these tips man and thank you.

Hi Jimmy - thanks for the kind words. Your local dive shop should have the plastic / nylon clips. Alternatively, this one with metal clips looks nice: amzn.to/3HGY60r For the rope used in my handle, I used 7mm rock climbing cordellette I had, but you could use anything. Here's a 10mm utility rope (says ok for climbing): amzn.to/3G5tMML You can also purchase a pre-made lanyard like this, but be sure to check the size: amzn.to/3q1i1kM Hope this helps. Thanks! The clips on my BCD are regular bolt snap on one side and key ring on the other side scuba lanyards, but with the lanyard and extra strong cut off. Here's one example: amzn.to/3Hu5UVb Check out more links to examples in the video description.
