I love Clogs as shop shoes. they are comfortable, Safe and easy to slip on and off. A while ago I was given these Traditional wooden dutch clogs from Rob and I have been wearing them as shop shoes for several months. it was time to carve them and have some fun. many would call them Wedding clogs when you decoratively carve them. these have chip carving, Celtic rope and weave carving, and a bit of my own flair.
Here is some Traditional hand tool woodworking that would make a fun project for any shop.

I have been wearing wooden clogs in my ceramic studio for 40 years.. I had a shoe maker add rubber bottoms and a soft pad on the instep. Great carving on your clogs. I will be traveling to Amsterdam next year and plan to buy another pair while I am there. Might even wear them while I am sketching the city at the annual Urban Sketchers Symposium. Thanks!

First and foremost, excellent work on the craving. The Celtics knot is one of my favorite designs. The awesome work aside, the title can lead one to believe you are carving a set of clogs from rough blocks of wood. (Which would be an awesome challenge for you to undertake.) Still thoroughly enjoyed the video.

I am from Belgium, and here clogs were also used. It would be nice to one day carve my own clogs, but that's something for a relatively far future. I never even thought about carving clogs. Well, I knew you can carve them to specific fit and such, but did never thought about carving a whole decoration on it!

Whenever the snow starts here I switch to Swedish clogs, so much safer than my other shoes for slippery sidewalks, and super comfortable. They have leather tops and are a bit more mainstream looking, but similar concept.

Good job on the carving, I'll be making a small carving mallet soon out of fresh Olive, and I hope I'll be able to do some carving using some cheap carving chisels I got online (they are the worst of the worst, but I didn't pay for them, so don't kill me when I'm saying I'll be using crap tools....). Genuine question what happens if you skip all the way to the finer sandpapers
@WoodByWright

Then it takes a lot longer. the course sandpaper removes the wood and shapes it. the rest just get rid of the scratches from the last step.

I adore these and your clog vids, it looks amazing--However i was pretty bummed, coming from the other vid, that this entire video wasnt simply about the more practical / important / "relevant to the masses" part: of carving out the inside to fit your feet comfortably with insight on what not to do & how theyre supposed to fit, tools used etc for blanks. (At the moment mine are extremely uncomfotable but I dont know if maybe they were "display" clogs (there being a difference other than attention to detail in design, doesn't make sense to me). Did I miss this somewhere in this vid or elsewhere? Did u just skim away t things until they felt right? Carve down the toe lift at all? That kind of stuff :) Thanks for all your amazing vids.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 года назад
You just use a hook knife and skim away the spots where you feel pressure. All of the from the factory have a lot of meet left on them.
@willemkossen
@willemkossen 7 лет назад
They look very nice indeed! A few points though: First: the clogs will breath less. Maybe for you not the biggest problem as you are not working 16 hour days in damp conditions, but a good thing to be mindful of. Second: how do you prevent your hands cramping up? I tried chipcarving in the past and cant really go more than a few minutes. Third: #CarvingIsWrong
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 лет назад
thanks Willem! I take them on and off 20 times a day as I come and go from the shop so breathing is not a problem. if your hands are cramping up you might want to try larger handles. but that is something that disappeared after the second day as I trained my hands. or at least that was for me. it might also be a sign of holding the chisel too tightly. you do not want to clamp the tool just hold it.
@scottbrewton2214
@scottbrewton2214 Год назад
So how did you form the inside to the shape of your foot?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright Год назад
They came mostly formed. I just used a hook knife to carve out the spots that caused pain.
@ballsdeep9648
@ballsdeep9648 5 лет назад
What material is on the inside of the clogs?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
I put in Arch supports as it is easier to ad the arch then carve everything else down. but other then that I stand on the wood that is carved to fit the foot.

You put them on and feel where the pressure points are. Then you carve those spots with a hook knife. Then repeat.

I see what you are saying. It is a bit difficult as this decoration is called carved clogs or wedding clogs. I believe I would title that video "how to make clogs" if I were Hollowing out the foot pocket. decorated clogs are the ones that are painted.

You got to love transliteration for you same reason that Pennsylvania was settled by the Germans but now called Dutch country
@rkroon5158
@rkroon5158 3 года назад
@@WoodByWright there are more mistakes, Germans call themselves deutchers because their country is called deutchland. German people were one of the first inhabitants of northern Europe. (bit the same as calling someone from England a Celt instead of an Englishman) people from the Netherlands call themselves nederlanders and not Dutch. dutch and deutch look alike because the name dutch is derived from deutch by English language countries. so actually dutch are called Germans in English. while these are two different countries and languages.
