Jeremy Atkinson is England's last remaining clog maker using traditional craft skills. Lynwen and Dave from Artisan were intrigued, so we met up with him earlier this year at his small shop / workshop in Kington, deep in the boarder country between England and Wales.
This is the first of 6 videos in which Jeremy shows how to make traditional english clogs.
He talks about the wood traditionally used in clog making; demonstrates how to hand cut a block of wood with a blocker, or stock knife, transforming it into the sole of the clog; and talks about the properties of the stock knife and the changing use of the name over the years.

The sound of the wood being carved away is so satisfying.

Using a stock knife like this looks as though it would be incredibly satisfying.

Such lovely craftsmanship. thank you for sharing. I sure hope you have someone you are teaching this to to pass it along.

Very fast and effective tool, but I think a huge amount of skill's needed to use it well. I think that virtually all the other clog makers use machines to make the soles.

When I studied metalworking we used a beverly shear to cut 2" wide, 1/8" thick flat bar stock. And at Blue Ox Millworks there is a portland picket pointer for making fence pickets. That's what I thought of when I saw the stock knife.

Just happened on this, forgotten about it..... Sycamore was used at Hawes [Yorkshire Dales], along with Birch and Alder; which is fine sodden but not if only damp. And you can cut across bone dry Sycamore if you get the blade razor sharp or better. I'm still learning.

this guy needs to visit America and do classes at the revolution and early America historical sites. He would probably make a killing selling those shoes, it is like art that's made specific to the person who wears them.

so ... how many years can a clog last?? ( if this is one of your only footwear an you use it a lot ) is it efficient price / labor versus life?

Nearly 24,000 views ,but under 140 thumbs up.One thumbs down,is that from his ex missus, haha. Could do with a pair of these, they look great.I`m on my 2nd pair from Poland, they last about a year before I totally wear them down on one side(I suppose I could get them healed and soled before that happens, but I`ve usually trashed the tops anyhow)....and not very supportive,so would be easy to twist an ankle, but fortunately I have very strong ankles,so I get away with it when my foot twists in the clog.An unpleasant feeling nonetheless.Being worn down on one side is probably no good for the knees and hips either. I only use them indoors, been a lifesaver on cold, damp traditional floor laid straight on earth.Wood is a superb insulator from the cold,I soon understood why field workers, miners etc wore them.

It looks pretty wearing on the back - that hunched over position as you cut must be a killer. I can see how the block knife is super efficient but am wondering if the drawknife and shaving horse give the same result, albeit taking longer but with much less back ache?
