Man, I remember about 4 or 5 years ago, me and my sister lifted a rock and saw some ants and we were like "Oh, cool. Ants." 30 minutes later we come back, lift the rock again, and I went batshit crazy because they had wings. Didn't know they grew wings to mate, thought they were 'super' ants.

they GROW wings the alates are born with wings in other words if you saw an ant without a wing it will never have a wing

Used to find many many queens all over my yard and I thought they were just some weird type of ant and mushed them cause they were squishy and had squishy butts. Now that I’m grown and realise they literally were all queens....... I could’ve been rich... there were like Atleast 50 of them each day, I thought it was a colony....

I know this comment is ancient but when i was about 12 at my old apartment complex there was an old tree in the front of the yard with a huge hole by the trunk, and there was a wood fence it wasnt big it was just holding the lawn in place because the lawn was higher than the side walk and it was a "highway" for black carpenter ants that were living in the tree, i used to catch bugs and put them by the nest entrance and watch the workers attack and bring them back to nest, one day i went into my yard and it was full of flying ants (at the time i didn't even know they were ants let alone undergoing their nupital flight) but it was amazing to see 100s of ants flying around on a warm summer evening, that was the one and only time ive witnessed a nuptial flight, now 16 years later i still i live in the same town i saw the nupital flight in but a different apartment complex, been interested in raising camponotus pennsylvanicus for a few years now but have had no luck whatsoever finding a queen, it truly seems like a fun and rewarding hobby if i could just get started..

Question: What if you remove a queen from an already thriving colony? Would the colony lose its purpose and slowly dwindle or something?
@JordanDeanFilms

If it's a single queen colony then yes, there would be no ants being created, and so, the colony would slowly diminish.

MoPro Uploads knew it.. it's an ant. now yeah, in some cases it's not a good idea and they have feelings to. but Queen Ants will try to rebuild a new colony and sometimes the old colony (if its a one ant colony) might be taken over by a new queen.

I've never went out to look and succesfully found Queens but just a few days ago I found my second Queen ant by chance. Around 5 or 6 years ago i found my first while sweeping at the end of a retail shift, caught it in a water bottle and transferred to a test tube, the colony reached i think 8-10 workers before winter but the Queen died during the hibernation period. Now I work in new construction and just happened to spot a winged ant crawling around inside the house we were working, once again caught it in a water bottle and transferred later, looks like its a harvester ant and hopefully it goes better this time.

+cary Blues the f*ck! Not cool! You should have let her go outside and made sure she wasn't hurt! Or you could ha e kept her because even if you don't want her plenty of people will buy the queen for a good amount of money!!!

Wish i was an expert on this but i guess anything that's close by. Unfortunately my closest ant-y neighbors are tropical fire ants but that doesn't stop me ow.

If you are from Australia, I'd say Iridomyrmex, but that genus may not exist in your region. So it really depends on where you live and what species inhabit your area.

I always have trouble finding queens because I live on a gravel road so it can be difficult to spot them. But I got lucky after a rain storm and found one hiding under a sea shell in my back yard. It's my first time with a queen. I hope she lives and I eventually get a colony.

If the colony gets big and the queen dies will the whole colony die out or what?
@poptart7193
@poptart7193 7 лет назад
Yes the ants will die if the queen dies
@Robss6969
@Robss6969 7 лет назад
but what if you get a new queen from the same species? Will the ants just kill her?
@poptart7193
@poptart7193 7 лет назад
It isn't Goning to work because all colonies have a different scent to identify one on other. Even if they are the same species the queen unless she is parisitic then it isn't going to work

@JordanDeanFilms
@JordanDeanFilms 7 лет назад
They are a little difficult as queens are semi-claustral. It's also hard to differentiate queens with workers too. So catching queens can be tricky. Iridomyrmex are very beginner friendly. They usually fly in Spring. Shouldn't be too hard to find some now.
@kimora3906

Potentially, they're an abundant genus, almost all over Australia.

I found a queen ant, It was in my school at recess, I didn't want it to get killed so I picked it up with paper and put it in a place where kids don't go and where there isn't an aggressive ant colony, Did I do the right thing?
