How To Catch Bass In Muddy Water

Bass LOVE muddy water! Its not as tough as you think to catch fish when the water is murky. Anglers often lose confidence and begin to struggle when the water turns muddy and starts to rise but its all in their heads. Rising muddy water means more food and more food means aggressive bass. When the muddy conditions arrive this year, you'll be ready!
Don't let water color scare you. Whether your lake is crystal clear or chocolate milk the bass still need to eat. Its all about adaptation and recognizing changing conditions. Don't be afraid to fish aggressively in dark water. Matt's favorite bait in high, muddy water is a spinnerbait. There is no reason to slow down unless the bass won't cooperate. If that happens, we've got a handful of other techniques you can try with confidence.
Below is a breakdown of the baits discussed in the video. All of these are proven producers in stained to muddy water. Don't be afraid to get out there after the next big storm, you might be surprised how many fish are willing to bite.

Great choices for baits in this video! Can’t go wrong with an all white bait when in doubt on what to use. Using those darker bait profiles in muddy water is a good way to go as well, as they will stand out quite a bit. Adding sound and scent are two other things I do, to allow fish to track the baits easier. Good video guys!

I actually caught my pb 4.02 bass, 2 years ago in muddy shallow water in February, here in jersey. I was using an UL spinning setup with 5 pound braid, and a jig spinner with a 1/32oz jighead + #4 sickle hook, and 2" bright chartreuse curl tail. I had a brass ripple blade on that spinner as well. I caught a bunch of fish on the same lure that day, smaller bass,crappies, and some adult pumpkinseed sunfish. Another bait I would recommend to try for bass in muddy conditions is, an over sized inline spinner, with a ripple blade or french blade. It's more of a traditional type of lure, that you don't see bass pros use a lot, but it will work. Few weeks ago I put together a MH bass setup, with a Tatula CT, and a picsifun Torrent 7'0 MH 2 piece rod, with 40 pound braid spooled. I built a set of heavier inline spinners with 1/4 oz bullet weights as the bodies, they all have french blades, and are in different color schemes, and they cast awesome on this MH rig. So far I've only landed 2 small pickerel on these lures, but those fish are the most awake in these cold waters right now.

Just watched Matt's old Topo map video which was good but was wondering if you guys could do a new one a little more in depth. Maybe grab a map of somewhere that you both have only been to once or twice and break down where you would start (for the different seasons) at a new lake based off of these maps and why. Then maybe follow that video with you guys on that lake, using what you talked about to find these places and how to cover those spots(how you would fish them)

Hey, love the videos...I was wondering if you could touch on the topic of lure weight with regard to rods. I'm guessing it's a range of lure weights that optimally load the rod for casting, but just how much can one vary from the manufacturers recommendation?..Can I safely throw a Whopper Plopper 130 on a rod rated up to an once? Or is it just a feeling thing, learning how much of a load the rod can take? Anyway, I don't think I've heard you folks comment on the subject, and it may be an interesting topic...thanks.

@jeffeckberg4099
@jeffeckberg4099 5 лет назад
Fish don't "hear" the same way that we do. They don't have hearing lobes like humans. They actually don't even have a sense of sound like us. They only feel the vibrations by their lateral line, which is connected to their central nervous system. What it sounds like to us would not be comparing apples to apples, therefore would not really be useful information.

Hey Tactical, so we've established the fact that muddy rising water isn't the worst. What about if the water is muddy from rain, but the water level largely stays the same? Some of the reservoirs here alter the water levels. I just had a tough day fishing muddy water in at pretty much the same level.
