Couple tips: 1. Cast and peel off loose line if you are using nylon lines. It is easier to see the bite on the fall if you have loose line slowly sinking with the bait. Watch it closely at the point the line is sinking INTO the water. 2. Let it sit. Put the line between your fingers while waiting. Check your watch, your phone, or turn around and see what is happening before starting to reel your bait. Just moving your body imparts action into your bait. 3. Try to imagine what your bait is coming across. Pretend that you are having to describe to a stenographer or map maker what is down there.

Man. Guilty as charged! I know I need to slow down and I tell myself that. But when I get out there, old habits take over. I’ve gotta retrain myself. Great vid Steve.

Excellent point I think we fisherman forget how much mathematics affect fishing in most of us like 80-90% are now using fishing rods OVER 6'6" in length and most are using rods 7'-7'3" in length and any movement of those rods at their grip is going to significantly increase the movement at the tip which in turn will result in an equally significant movement of our baits. Great very helpful information and something so very very elementary it can easily escape our attention but very important it does not

It is incredible what the smallest movement in our wrist translates to in a 7 foot plus rod. It’s easy to get in a habit and keep presenting the lure the same way.

Great video ! I seem to rush when fishing always want to make another cast going to slow down this season thanks for the advice. My wife and I work shorelines to fast and rush to the next dock. She luvs to fish her 4" zoom lizards do these tips apply to lizards also?
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 4 года назад
Absolutely, this would work great with Lizards as well. I struggle with fishing too fast myself. I'm always trying to slow myself down.

Fantastic video Steve! Your point about how prey are usually sitting still on the bottom is spot on. You deserve way more subscribers.

I’ve only been bass fishing for a few years now, but I have yet to even get a nibble on a plastic worm regardless of how I’ve rigged or presented the lure! I’m not sure if it’s just here in western NY, or if it’s just me…🤷‍♂️ But they don’t seem to work up here. I have yet to meet a local bass fisherman here that uses them or has success with them either up here. Not even color has made a difference

When I first started trying to learn about them I used a 4" worm for a long time to build my confidence in them. That smaller size seemed to get a lot more bites at that stage of my fishing. Back then I rigged them on a Charlie Brewer Slider head a lot. I love fishing in New York. Some of my favorite waters in the entire country!

So I think I heard you say I shouldn't over-work my plastics, is that correct? :)

Yep. I really struggle with this myself, but every time I slow down I catch way more.

Learned dead sticking from "Bud Andrews" Central Fl.. guide . He made small talk with me in his office at Lake Tsala -Apopka in Inverness. Small chain I won my first tourney on. He catches a giant almost every trip. He pushed to get me to go on a $ Guide Trip I was all ears we (girlfriend and I) Talked with him for about an hour. He said he would cast weighted plastic worms as well as sinking hard baits and just let them sit on the lake bottom for 10 -20 minutes! This was 1991........He also let topwaters float into weeds and repeat the sit and do nothing . Boy was that a majic trick. It's a Florida Bass monster killer. Even today knowone let's baits sit that long. 3-4 casts per hour. A monster Bass "trick". Sorry just wanted you to hear his name.

Can’t count the number of times I’m fixing a birds nest and when I get it clear I have a fish on. But I still can’t convince myself to just let the worm sit for a few seconds

I call it shake it in place no move no reel just shake it then 2 little hops let sink and shake it in place

My single biggest problem is trying to not just narrow my color selection of soft plastics down to only 4 or 5 base colors but only 2 or 3 within the base color for example in my lakes Watermelon colors are very very effective but just plane Watermelon is not as effective as Watermelon red sparkle flake and if very bright out Watermelon red sparkle flake with a pearl belly is best but on mostly cloudy days Watermelon candy works better than any other Watermelon color variants and if its a post frontal I almost always end up going through a prety diverse color spectrum before I establish a color the bass want usually I start with Watermelon red flake then try blk sparkle blue sparkle flake then junebug then Okeechobee craw then Tilapia if post frontal conditions I rarely get lucky and the bass like one of the first 3 colors I try. I have heard MANY fisherman 10x more accomplished than I say you only need three basic soft plastic colors of Watermelon greenpumpkin and black/blue and I wish that were the case in my lakes but it just isn't Im sure its due to my lakes see immense fishing pressure but thankfully based on my observations 8/10 guys I see fishing aren't even minimally successful once the weeds take over the lakes by May 7th But oddly I have only needed three different colors of Flukes and one color variant to enjoy utterly amazing success White Ice Ghost shad Watermelon red flake or Watermelon red flake pearl Rigged weedles have enjoyed many many times where I caught 8-20 bass in under 5 hours. Now that Im using a brand of Speedworms that float very well are going to try to see if those in three different colors can be as successful as all other worms I use Hoping a floating speedworm that only the head stays on the bottom and the rest of the worm sticks essentially straight up can fill all the rolls of my other non floating soft plastics worked slowly on or just above the bottom

That heavy vegetation makes such a big difference. I remember the first time I fished Florida I was shocked how thick it was.
