This is a step by step video on how to catch crawfish/crayfish (and what to do once you get them home)! Tons of people love crawfish for bait or for eating, but you have to catch them first! I hope this was a helpful guide on how to trap them! Let me know in the comments below!
The Gee's G-40 Minnow traps can be bought on Amazon or at Walmart and they cost about $15 each. For the average person they should work great. If you want to find out if crawfish can escape traps check out this video I made:

why is that not a good idea? i am about to attempt to trap some for the first time and eat them
@nateitscake88
@nateitscake88 4 года назад
@@93tjfresh It pre-maturely kills the crawfish and it serves no purpose. You do not need salt to purge/clean them. All you need is a big kiddie pool or a big cooler. I prefer the kiddie pool because the crawfish will not stack up on each other as much, the weight of the crawfish stacking up on each other kills the ones on bottom plus it displaces oxygen. Just get yourself a bi kiddie pool and fill it up with some tap water. Let soak for and hour and drain the water... Do this 2-3X and they will be clean!

Excellent video! I ordered a trap on Amazon. When I was a boy, I would get barefoot, walk through the creek in my neighborhood and hurt grab crayfish with my bare hands. I could have the bottom of a bucket covered in an hour, but a trap is going to save me a lot of walking. I am going to get a pet cat and I love sardines. So, I think the first baits I will try in my Crawdad trap are semi- moist cat food (that comes in a pouch) and sardines in oil. I want the crayfish for a "natural" fish tank that I am creating that will not have the typical "tropical fish," but fish representative of the lakes around me, here in Northern Illinois. In college, I caught a small bluegill on a rod and reel and kept it in a 10 gal. tank in my apt. for years. This tank will have a pea gravel bottom, rocks from the beaches of Lake Michigan, live freshwater plants, crayfish, plecostomus, Google eyed goldfish and minnows. I am interested in eating some of the larger Crawdads that I catch. I'm assuming that you only eat the tail. Could you post your favorite recipe. We have a New Orleans style restaurant here in Chicago land called "Crawdaddy Bayou." I had the crowded tails in white sauce with cheese over linguine and it was fantastic. That with some garlic bread and a panettone Ribbon beer = heaven! 😉

If you are one of the people responsible for the glorious supply of crawfish at my local store here in NY, I just want to say god bless you sir! I never really ate them because my entire family in Arkansas couldn't get over their bug like appearance. Despite that, I just kept hearing people say they tasted so good! So after trying some "Long John Silvers" and finding out that I absolutely LOVE shrimp, and also finding out that I love sushi, I figured I may like crawfish too. I must admit that I was originally put off by their look just like the rest of my family, but after I tore into my first few (very messy with no sense of technique) WOW the feast I was missing all that time. I regularly purchase these things now from my local store and even include them in my weight gain diet. They are absolutely superb!

How me and my family do it with is we grab a fishing rod, take the hook off because we don't want it to grab into something under the water. After that, we tie some food to the end of the rod. The most common here in fish heads, salami, snails, and really any kind of meat the crawfish can grab onto. And we also put a small rock or something heavy to weigh the food down. After we see that thing that in on top of the water and is colourful ( I forgot the name of it) move, we let it stay a bit longer and then we pull the rod slowly out and to the edge. We keep the crawfish just under the water untill we put a rod with a either a sack or an opened cage attached under the crawfish and lift it out. And we just put them in a bucked. You don't really need a fishing rod, you can use a long branch with string attached and tie the food and rock to the end of that.

Man living in texas and then going to school at Colorado state university every pond outside the city of Fort Collins was packed with these signal crayfish I was used to crawfishing in east texas near the border of Louisiana but my friends and I would go out at night and I would always keep the brown trout after I would fillet them and and pond that was near the river would have millions in them. We would cut up a chunk and make about 12 hand lines all over the bank. It would take us maybe an hour and a half to fill a cooler of them. I would bring them back to the house and put them in a 4’ blue kiddie pool and use two fish tank airblowers. In Colorado they don’t have crawfish boil so I always had to order it off the internet. I would purge them out for two days and then we would have a huge boil. It was so much fun nobody else was catching them and we would catch more than we knew what to do with. They don’t taste the same as red crawfish but they get the job done when your away at school and your favorite food is boiled crawfish from Louisiana. It was always just fun going out and having fun.
