Want to know how to catch Mullet at Berry Bay on the Yorke Peninsula? It's so much fun. It was a warm spring day and the conditions were perfect for catching Mullet. So we put gents on long shanked hooks and kept our burley springs packed full of burley.
Our Mullet fishing spot was just in front of the stairs at Berry Bay and we were casting into a gutter in front of a sandbar. It did not take long for the Mullet to start biting. There must have been a school of Mullet in that gutter because we constantly caught fish. They were all around the same size - 23cms to 26cms. We caught a few undersized ones as well and they all went back. Martin also caught a couple of nice sized Australian Herring (Tommy Ruff) which we kept for bait.
We noticed that people around us were trying for salmon, probably because Berry Bay is known as a great spot for salmon. We have caught salmon before standing in exactly the same spot in front of the stairs, but that was just after sunrise. On this day however the salmon weren't around. But the Mullet sure were!
I got talking to the guy next to us who was using a drone. I was very interested to see how it works because we were thinking of buying a drone ourselves. The guy sent us some of his drone footage and it is included in the video (he did not want to be acknowledged in our video - but we sure appreciated his generosity). It really adds another dimension to the video and shows what a stunning place this is! Dolphins even came and played in the Bay, surfing the waves and the drone footage of that is beautiful.
All in all we caught around twenty five Mullet. We gave half of the keepers to the drone guy, and there was still enough fish to feed us for two nights. We made creamy fish casserole in the camp kitchen for dinner that night, and smoked the rest of the Mullet the following night in the carpark overlooking Marion Bay. It was so fresh and tasted delicious!
