Changed the centerboard on my telstar 28 trimaran sailboat as the old one had snapped. Bit tricky with it being a trailer sailer but I made it work.

Well done Alex. That looks like it could have been a nightmare of a job. Thanks for sharing. All the best with the other tasks. Hope you are on the water soon. Here it is the depth of a Canadian Prairie winter so no sailing ‘till likely May at the earliest, whenever the lake melts 😢

Thank you! That’s a long wait for a sail! Must be a lovely place to sail when it all melts though!

Very interesting episode Alex and great job sorting out the centerboard! I was thinking, if you had small line fed down through the centerboard trunk, looped around the spool and back up, you could use it to help position the spool and align the pin. (Just a thought) I did some work fairing a rudder and later learned, it the both sides of a foil aren't exactly symmetrical to each other, you may experience vibration at various speeds. The solution was to make some templates and compare each side to ensure they're the same. Cheers, Tim

Yeah that would have made it a little easier and I think I got each side quite close and I don’t think I have had any vibration.

Excellent work on a tricky job. With my hawk I towed the trailer up a ramp to provide the working room under.

Alex: I have a 2008 Telstar 28. Your videos have inspired me to do more modifications myself. My centerboard rope failed last season. I’m having the boat hauled this week. What size and length of rope did you use to replace the old line around the drum? I have the video Tony and Will made but they don’t discuss that. Thanks for any help. My board is longer than yours, hopefully that won’t make a difference.
@AlexGoesSailing
@AlexGoesSailing 2 месяца назад
@@AndrewsRenaissanceExperi-mk3vr don’t think it will make a difference. I think it was 10mm but you can also check through the inspection hatch. Length I would get 3m to be safe.

@@AlexGoesSailing thanks. I pulled the board yesterday. It wouldn’t come out until almost completely vertical. The starboard and rope fell off before I could take a picture. My board is different than your model. It’s longer, slightly different shape, and I has an extra roller (smaller) underneath the grey PVC roller. I contacted the builder’s son, Will, to ask what’s the purpose of the smaller roller. I have till Tuesday to figure it out as the boat yard will force me back in the water.

I would have used silicon rather than sikaflex, that is going to be more than a pain if you have to get that back off again
@AlexGoesSailing
@AlexGoesSailing 9 месяцев назад
Silicone is just as bad and isn’t as good so opted to use it especially since I already had a tube open and it would have gone to waste otherwise. Hopefully I don’t have to take it out anytime soon!

the centreboard really was lacking material. Should be much more effective, over nothing. 2x👍

Bet you wished you had dug the hole before driving the trailer in place! Out of interest, what is the size, thickness and specification of the board.
@AlexGoesSailing
@AlexGoesSailing 9 месяцев назад
44mm thick if I remember correctly. Two big bits of marine ply stuck together. Not so sure on length and width but there is a drawing floating around on the internet! Yeah digging that hole beforehand would have been nice!

You realise thst would have been easier to do when the trailer wasn't under the boat 😂
@AlexGoesSailing
@AlexGoesSailing 9 месяцев назад
It would have been but the timings didn’t work out unfortunately. But it did feel safer with a trailer under the boat!

@@AlexGoesSailing Definitely safer, mind you if you were fat like me, the tummy comes in handy for holding things up 🤦‍♂️
