I have a Bachelors degree in Aviation Maintenance and hold FAA certifications as a aircraft mechanic. I have also been working on cars and motorcycles for over 50 years. Checking RU-vid as to location and getting a heads up on tools is great. Dont ever be embarrassed to look things up on RU-vid. As even Professional mechanics can use pointers on stuff they dont do everyday.

Favorite part was when you said "For all of you that don't know what that means, just point it towards the front of the vehicle." I am that guy and that REALLY did help me out because I had no idea what you were talking about. Hahahahaha! Thanks, brother :)

Thomas, thank you for posting these videos. I have NEVER messed with my 1994 chev c1500 before. Always paid somebody else to do it. This fuel filter one was really easy. Knowing exactly what tools to use and what to expect took all the intimidation away. While I was changing it, I noticed that the last guy that did a tune up for me had it installed backwards. An added bonus...I had fun working on my vehicle and will continue to do it. Thanks, buddy.

I want you to know that your video just save me a lot of money I'm sort of mechanically inclined and can change alternator batteries spark plugs lines things like that but I've never changed a fuel filter I watched your video once and just changed mine and it's good as new and got my check engine light off! I just want to say thank you for making this video please keep making more doesn't matter what the vehicle with the issue you're working on is I will watch and you just definitely aren't a subscriber! Thanks again so much

I changed mine on my 91 burb today, I held a towel up by the lines when I disconnected them so I didn't get sprayed with fuel. thanks for mentioning that it wasn't necessary to remove the strap otherwise I probably would have taken it completely off instead of loosening, which I just remembered I need to crawl back under there and tighten it back up!

thomas brian thank you mission accomplished. Google glasses are glassses with a camera on it and a little computer screen that you can control with your eye. You can start recording and stop recording with just a blink of an eye from your glasses and that should be really helful when sharing your knowledge since you wouldnt have to hold a camera in one hand and work with another. hands free. you record whatever you are looking at and at the end you just post it on (actually my website that I am buildng for people like you to share their expertees). thank you again.

Thank you for a very fine video. May I make one suggestion. You should always use a line wrench for removing the fuel line. They can be purchased at all auto parts stores or big box stores. Fuel line nuts are easily rounded with a standard open end or an adjustable wrench. I line wrench can prevent that from happening. Once again, thank you for a fine video.

Thomas, thanks for these clear directions and for the priming method. My 2000 Suburban 5.3L (220K miles) stalls intermittently running warm under a load. The fuel pump may be failing (not sure it has ever been replaced) but I plan to first replace the filter and retest since the filter is relatively cheap. As an aside, I am getting engine code P0446 (Fuel Evap Control) but this was happening before the engine began to stall. It could be Vent Control Valve and/or Canister since I recently replaced the purge control valve at the intake manifold. Thanks again :) Robert
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 8 лет назад
+sierrafoothill awesome ty for watching. p0446, check for a vacuum leak. while it is running spray a little starting fluid around all vacuum lines. if the idle goes up, you have found the leak. then clear the code. if you replaced those items after you read the code, you may have fixed the problem. but the computer doesn't know that. you must clear the code to see if you did. I have done this same process in detail at backyardmechanic.org check it out before you spend any money. thanks for the great comments, and for watching.

yes it will, it sounds like the fuel pump ring was not put on properly, and it is leaking from the top of the tank, this could start a fire as well. you could be loosing fuel presure, which will cause the car to shake and have a lack of power. look at it as soon as possible.

@michael.sierra
@michael.sierra 6 лет назад
If it helps, take out fuel pump relay in the under hood fuse box and crank the engine for a few seconds to evacuate the fuel pressure so you have less gas in your face when you remove the old filter.
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 6 лет назад
very true, if you choose to do that, make sure after the repair you prime the fuel before starting though because you never want to dry start your engine. that little bit of cranking without firing is not good, but good advice. thanks for watching.

great video. thanks for making it. Would this be the same setup on a 1990 chevy 1500? My truck won't turn over unless I prime it, then it only runs until the fuel in the carb is gone. what do you think? Thank you.
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 8 лет назад
+thewrath1977 ok three things it could be, 1 plugged fuel filter 2 bad fuel pump 3 needle valve in the carb is stuck. first disconnect the fuel line to the carb, turn over the engine if fuel comes out it is the carb then the needle valve is the prob. i have a video on how to fix that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kT8UFiPnH7E.html if fuel does not come out, disconnect the line going from the tank to the back of the filter, turn it over again. if there is fuel the filter needs changed. if there is no fuel when cranking then the fuel pump is out. make sure you have gas in the tank, haha but i know you know that. thanks for watching. follow these steps and you will fix it.!!!

I'm 16, bought my first vehicle a couple months back (March). Got my license and been driving it quite a bit. It's a 2002 gmc sonoma 4x4. Gas mileage isn't very good and I found a replacement fuel filter for $20 online. I read that replacing this improves performance and mileage a bit. Is this true? Also, do I need to de pressurize the fuel lines or anything? Thanks :)
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 9 лет назад
tyandscott yes it is very true,and no you do not need to. you can prime it. after replacing the filter. turn your key to the on position just be fore it starts cranking. then shut it off. do this three times on and off. leaving it on for about 3 seconds each time. this will prime it for you. thanks for watching and thanks for the question. click on my name under the video for all my chevy videos. click on the (-ff) video i think you will like it. its a little humor. thanks again.

+thomas brian question, I've changed the fuel filter on my 2003 Chevy Avalanche but i still have the same problem. Truck starts up pretty good, but whenever i switch gears unless i 2 foot it, the truck kills after idling for a few sec or so.....any suggestions?
@thomasbriansavingmoney

that sounds like a fuel pump problem. not enough pressure. there is a valve on the fuel rail, it looks like a large valve stem with cap. it is where you attach a fuel pressure tester.you should have at least 80 lbs ( you can rent those for free at any automotive parts store. if you do not have 80 lbs, change the fuel pump. if you do have 80 lbs or more, change the pressure regulator . its under the hood on the passengers side of the engine with a small vacuum hoe to it. ( make sure that vacuum hose does not have a leak.) to test the hose, while its running spray a little starting fluid on it. if your idle goes up, its bad. if the idle stays the same its good. good luck, please let me know what you found,,, please. thanks for watching

+thomas brian Thanks for posting the video. I am a pretty good mechanic but it always helps to see it done "BEFORE" you dig into it. Where is the pressure regulator located?

i have a 2000 blazer and I ran out of gas a few weeks ago, and I've been having problems starting it ever since. I poured some seafoam in it and it worked for a few days but now its back to not starting. u think fuel filter?
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 9 лет назад
+okeye1388 yes for sure. when the tank runs out of fuel it is sucking up the last of the fuel, which is where all the dirt etc will be ( the bottom of the tank) . so it prob clogged up the filter fast. this is why i do not like using a fuel additive to a older vehicle. the stuff works great like a drano, the prob is it mixs all that dirt with the gas and bam, your filter is glogged. leave that dirt where it belongs at the bottom of the tank. the odds are it will do it again. after changing your filter, keep a quarter tank or so in the tank at all times. or i assure you , you will be replacing it again. thank you for the comment.

I don’t understand why you are going to remove the bracket for the filter? All you need to do is slide it towards the front to remove, and towards the back when getting the new one on.

these models also have a second filter up near the throttle body correct?
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 9 лет назад
no they sure dont, however the older model will. most of them are either carburated or throttle body injection. some of the 4.3 and 4 cyl will also have a push pull system. two fuel pumps. one in the tank and one on the intake like your suggesting. but dont confuse that pull pump with a filter. it will look like one but note if it has wires to it, it is not a filter. i hope this helps. thank you for your comment.

i have a 1990 s10 pickup.....Cannot find fuel filter...please tell me its not in the gas tank- cant find any info online...Any help would be appreciated
@thomasbriansavingmoney
@thomasbriansavingmoney 8 лет назад
+DRUMNICOdotcom those little trucks like to hold pressure, be sure to loosen or remove the fuel cap first. as far as the location it should be on the drivers side inside the frame rail. in front of the tank, but inside the frame. crawl under the truck on the drivers side feet should be toward the driver and head toward the passenger directly below driver seat. lay on your back and look at the frame. if you don't see it move your head toward the rear. it should be between you and the fuel tank. some were close to the fuel tank. good luck. no by the way it is not a in tank filter.
