I show some history of the oil windows in my tools, how to easily source and change them and show off the Cincinnati Toolmaster 1D Metal Mill! IT IS ALIVE :) And a favor at the end :) IS it ok to Show "Rossie the Shop Dog that could never be" at the end?

Thank you for doing these videos! They help me a lot and give me confidence about certain maintenance techniques. All of the older machinists that were around me, are no longer, so I’ve got nobody to ask. One day I may do a video tour of my shop for you, I think you’d like it. FYI: My lathe is a Sharp - same Taiwanese manufacturer as Jet, Lux-Matter and others. The oil sight windows are metric and a different animal than the Bijur. I found a replacement source at Elesa in the HE and HRT series. I had already "refurbished" my originals so I have not actually ordered. Elesa has order quantity minimums so you may have to source from a reseller.

Thanks for the hands on illustrated 1D work. My 1D was in three heavy parts when I got it. Bar-draw bolt and knob missing. Jerry rigged transformer bypassed when I got it was fixed with a new transformer. Made a bar-draw bolt and knob. I still have not fixed the leaky oil seal. My table power feed has stripped gears. Probably because the lead screw is worn, the backlash eliminator was set to take out the slop in the middle of the table but caused it to be super tight/impossible to get the last 6 inches of travel or more from left or right. I guess the previous shop used the power feed with a tight lead screw and made a mess of the gears. Still fun to use even if it leaks and has no table power feed.

This is a great video Steve! I didn't know it was so easy to change oil sight glasses..... I guess it's all in knowing how, huh? FYI - Years ago I used to use tricorethylene, sinusol, percorethylene, acetone and such.... Bare handed. As a machinist I had my hands in to all kinds of degreasing agents....... Crackmaster has a very limited selection of those, it is the "press fit thru wall sights", used one last year. Needed an oddball size on my Yam lathe, iirc it was 1-1/16", could not find that size anywhere, ended up using a bronze flanged bushing to reduce the hole to 25mm so a plastic one would fit.

I'm assuming that on any machine with this type of "window" so long as the oil level is in the middle it is fine, correct?
@10swatkins
@10swatkins Год назад
Pretty much.... One exception is the type of window that really is a window... Axelson lathes have a small window near the top of the head that really is just a window. There is a small oil line behind the window that drips oil as the machine is running. You can see the drops and that tells you the oil pump is running..

Steve, could you do me a favor? My 1-D is missing the handle for the spindle lock. I can confirm that strange and undesirable things happen when the main motor is switched on when the spindle is still locked yet. Would it be possible to get me a picture or two of what exactly the handle consists of? Many thanks!

@jimbehning118 2 года назад
@@nschelling6420 The illustrated parts manual has a drawing of the bar-draw bolt. Get a three step step ladder and take the cover off the bar-draw bolt. You will see the simple mechanism. The bar-draw bolt and knob was missing off my 19611D. I made a bar draw bolt out of some 1/2" plate I had laying around based on the drawing. I turned a knob out of aluminum. The parts manuals are available on the internet. If there was a way to post a picture I would. Note that the knob for the bar-draw bolt prevents accidental motor engagement when the bar-draw bolt is slid onto the flats of the bar-draw. The knob is 1.5" in diameter where it engages in the S position of the L-S-R on my 1960 or 1961 1D. The L-S-R switch on my 1D has a round area in the S position that the knob slides into. You cannot make L or R happen until you pull the bar-draw bolt out and off the flats of the draw bolt. You cannot engage the bar-draw bolt when the motor switch is in L or R. I do see some 1Ds do not have this safety feature to prevent motor engagement. Note that I am not a machinist, never played on in real life. Making or fixing this feature is a pretty simple task. I do need to take everything apart to change the leaking oil seal. Other issues with my 1D but I have made a few things and fixed a few things.

How does whay oil compare to say 80 -90 gear oil? And does it have a smell like 80-90 gear oil or no smell?
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 2 года назад
I way oil from my Chevron Distributor here in town, buy it in 5 gallon pails, mainly because it is close and cheaper. (They also have the oil I use in the planer in 55 gallon drums :) ) Their way oil does not smell like 90 weight gear lube. Way oil has additives to make it stickie so that it sticks to the parts and reduce, or eliminate, stick-slip in machine tools. Stick-slip is not good :)
