How to Change a Toilet Seat with Corroded Bolts 

Mine had plastic nuts on the bottom and no maneuverablity space ... barely enough room to fit my shoulders. Plus, the washer wasn't brittle at all; it was so soft that my wrench couldn't grip it. Watching your video gave me an idea that probably wouldn't have occurred to me. I used a chisel and mallet to gradually cut through the washer, then wire cutters to cut/pull bits of it off until I was able to finger loosen the bolt. Thank you!

Emily, Great Video...also the older ones still have plastic nuts on the bottom. You can get a flathead screw driver between the nut and it will usually break off cause they are so brittle.

This is a very helpful video. I have been trying to remove my toilet seat for the last three days. It has been an ordeal until today. I broke the part attached to the bolts and they felt on the floor. After that I could finally replace the toilet seat. The new one has plastic bolts so I don't think in the future I will have to deal with corroded bolts. Thank you very much for your video!!!😀

After two hours my hands and legs hurting trying to on screw the plastic nut I came across your video within minutes I broke the collars the screws fell threw put the new seat on and done only thing I recommend don’t buy a seat with metal screws that was a lesson hard learned.

With slotted bolts as shown in the vid,, easy to drill out from topside,,,1/4" drillbit. If different like mine was, I used plastic welder from Harbor Freight (amounts to extra hot solder appliance -$10), to melt out the nylon nuts. Extra hot soldering gun with spade adapter would probably work as well.

Forget what these people talking about. I watched 5 other videos and yours was the one that actually fixed my toilet seat. I was struggling and almost gave up then I just broke the plastic part off the bolt and it came right out the hole like yours did. Thank you!!!!!!!

Hi - If the nut is plastic just get a sharp chisel and a mallet, working from below carefully cut it off the bolt and voila - done. Should take about 3 minutes if you are really careful.

I agree with some of the others. Not very helpful at all. Best to just use WD-40 to try to loosen the bolts. Also, the rusting is not necessarily from backsplash. In more humid parts of the world, these bolts are likely to rust.

The bolts get rusty because all the pee pee that splashes all over. I puts a collection pan there, collect the urine, and then throw it on my neighbors front porch. I hate them.
