In this video we show how to replace the front brake pads and rotor on a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. With some simple hand tools the brakes can be replaced. We show how we changed both the rotors and pads on this truck in a matter of minutes.

Day late and a dollar short. Just had my pads and front rotors replaced. Wished I would have watched this first to realize I could do it myself and save myself $550. Thanks for the video! I’ll be doing this myself next time.

Liked it. Only thing I would add would be pushing the pistons back when installing the new pad as they will shift when removed. That and also make sure to pump your brakes after and CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR!

Just checked my right front... Thanks for posting this excellent video. I had to grind a 17mm to get it to fit those slider bolts... Thanks for the clue on holding those. First time one takes this stuff apart, it's not obvious that the pins stay and the 13mm bolt comes out of them. Not much room to get a pry on the pads but I wiggled the caliper a bit and once it's off, used a couple of thickness of 3 ply cardboard on the piston and my big channel locks to squeeze the pistons back a fraction. My pads were still better than 3/16" at 72,000 kms so they're staying on for a while longer. Dealer told me at 59,500 kms that I needed $1,300 CAD worth of brake work because they were worn and the rotors were a bit rusty! Ha! B.S. Of course they're worn, and of course the rotors are rusty, except where the pads clean them! Anyway a big Thanks again for posting.

Liked the video, short and informative. As mentioned in the video if you remove the caliper and remove the old break pads and replace them with new ones. The new brake pads will be bigger so you will have push the caliper piston back further. I suggest 2 c clamps and a bar to hold the compression of the piston or maybe a 3rd clamp. Put the old brake pad over the pistons and tighten your clamps to compress the pistons. ( I could not do it by hand or with out the proper tool FYI) PS if you are unable to remove the caliper or its jamming, Try realigning the caliper replace the two 13mm bolts and finger tighten it barely and re compress the pistons in the original position. Also PUMP those breaks after the job is done.

Great video. Very informative, anyone should be able to do this after watching this. I had to use skinny 17 mm wrench for a 2016 Ram Hemi when taking off those 13mm bolts. I usually use a big C-clamp and a piece of wood, like a 2x4 to compress the pistons... Don't top off your brake fluid beforehand, it might overflow once you push the piston in... Not sure, but it might be a good idea to open the cap for the brake fluid so it can release the pressure

@Jerry-cc7rd
@Jerry-cc7rd 2 года назад
@@MgOrt231 @N I've always just used a big C clamp and a 2x4 to compress the pistons... You just put the wood against the pistons and crank away with the c clamp, with one part of the c clamp behind the caliper until it bottoms out. You could use any piece of wood. The only purpose of using the wood is so you don't have metal pushing on your pistons when you're decompressing them with the c clamp. 👍

Good video. I did a buddy's 2013 ram here in the salt belt and you wont believe how uncredibly hard it was to remove the front rotors. Had to beat it senseless with a bfh and be careful not to hit the studs. A torch would be good but we didn't have access to one. Then we put anti seize so next time itll be easier.

@BoostedMotorsports
@BoostedMotorsports 5 лет назад
Thanks for the support on the channel! It sounds like your pads are binding. Some cheaper pads need the tabs to be filed down a bit because they fit right like you said in the caliper bracket. If you stick them in without filing them when you press the brakes the pads wont be able to release so it’s like the brakes are stuck on causing the heat you are seeing. I would get better pads or take those out and file the tabs down a bit so they aren’t so tight

Great video, but just like many including yours, I’m not understanding how you compressed the piston with the flat head? Maybe I was being too fragile, but I took my flat head and wedged it on the lip of the brake pad and pried towards me and I couldn’t get anything to move. I eventually got it off by just rocking it front to back till it slide off. Lol

@norskibull2.021
@norskibull2.021 2 года назад
Take a flat head screw driver to the edge of the bolts boot, coming from the engine compartment toward the outside of the truck. With the flathead placed between the boot that surrounds the pin and the metal pad, pry toward the tire, not toward engine. They will compress, he explained this in the video and did so throughly, which helped me big time. Once the caliper is off, you push the pin boots outwards all the way, might need a clamp to help (I used on one, where the other one was able to by hand) …. Lastly, I take a large C clamp, with a piece of hardwood 5-6 inches long, and compress the main two cylinders on the caliper and that gets it all the way back. Do it slowly and open the brake fluid cap while doing that, with a rag tied around the rim of the opening. Pop tha cal back onto the brake structure and slip the pins on wrench em on. Get the tire on and press your brake down slowly, release slowly, and do that a few times, it’ll stiffen up and lastly replace the cap. If your caliper is making strange noises, or your vehicle pulls hard while driving, you got bigger issues than pads, your caliper is probably seized up and needs replacing. Know it’s a late post to you but hope this helps you or someone in the future. Peace from your neighborhood pitbull

Question with the rotor - how does one successfully get the bastard off when it's the OEM install? If anyone can give me some suggestions, I'm stuck with just swapping out the pads for now on this beast. Thanks!
@josh9c118
@josh9c118 2 года назад
Certain gens of the Ram 1500 came with a sort of flat locking washer that goes over one the lug nuts. You’d see it once the wheel removed. It’s just put there during assembly so the rotor doesn’t fall off. It needs to be cut and removed and thrown out. That could easily be preventing it to come off Otherwise, it sounds like your rotor is rust welded to the hub. If you’re not planning on reusing the rotor, you can smack the crap of the rotor in alternating spots. Making sure not to hit your wheel studs. Assuming you are talking about the front rotors, you can also turn wheel lock in one direction, and repeat the hitting of the rotor steps, but on the back of rotor. Also using rust penetrant can’t hurt.
