Lets change the oil on my Volvo Penta DP-E drive. Took 8 tries to break loose the drain plug. Oil didn't look very good. Simple process to change the out drive oil. Something every boat owner DIYer should know how to do. Most other manufactures are VERY similar. Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, Honda, etc...

First, take out oil dipstick. This will allow the oil drain plug to come out easily. There will be no vacuum holding it in.

Use a square shank screw driver & crescent wrench to loosen oil drain plug.

Youre supposed to have the drive raised all the way up with draining and filling.

I have one of these drives and have changed the oil several times now and it always comes out black. Not sure what to think honestly. It was one of those drives that had been resealed and repainted.

It doesn't take much black oil to turn a whole gear case black

Why is the Volvo Penta drain plug a flat blade type? Would be so much easier if they used an Allen head or bolt head. If someone designed a replacement they’d make a fortune!

@mitchlewis535 Could take the drain plug to a machine/welding shop and have a hex head welded on. I will next time it comes off.
