Are your brake pads on your Harley-Davidson Sportster on their last centimeter of life? Are you lost when it comes to changing them out? Don't worry, Todd is here for you. Watch as he walks you through how easy it is to change out those old wore out brake pads with a new set in this short how to tech tip. Proper care and maintenance is very important and should never be overlooked. It's recommended by Harley-Davidson to inspect your brake pads every 2500 miles.
00:01 - Intro
00:26 - Compress the pistons in the caliper explanation.
01:12 - Clean of the caliper and brake pad area with brake clean and some air.
01:58 - Use a pri-bar or putty knife to compress the brake caliper pistons.
03:12 - Remove the two pins holding the brake pads in.
04:32 - Remove the pads if they haven't already fallen out of the caliper.
04:43 - Note the orientation in which the brake pads go with the new ones, see the difference between the inside and outside pads.
05:20 - Clean the 2 pins off.
05:38 - Apply pin lube to the 2 pins.
06:15 - Install the new pads.
08:53 - Install the 2 pins into the caliper and torque to factory spec.
09:33 - Review
10:28 - Pump those brakes
10:37 - Check the brake fluid level. Don't mix Dot 3,4, or 5 always use same fluid.
12:31 - Brake pad change complete now GO FOR A RIDE!

Wow! I had to watch a dozen videos of rear brakes being replaced with different bolt patterns before stumbling upon this Masterpiece. And as Todd stated that caliper is used on different models, exactly like my 04 Superglide except on the Right side. And just as with my Superglide the master cylinder is behind the exhaust??? And wouldn't you know it these guys are Not only Buckeyes but right here in my backyard, Literally, I'm in Lodi. You have found yourself a New customer as I like to shop Local. See ya in the future. Thanks for the Great video, your commercial is crazy too. LOL

Right?!! I love this channel mostly cause even if there is a slight difference from my bike I already have the reference and its basically about the same from harley to harley (unless its custom built but basic maintenance always 95% the same from model to model)

I had no problem replacing the front brake pads on my 2006 Road Glide. But when I looked into replacing the rear brake pads I thought for sure I was going to have to take the bike to the shop. Then I saw your video. Thanks to you, replacing the rear brake pads was a lot simpler than it looked. Thanks Todd.

The sportster roadster is different with two pistons, one on each side and the pin that holds the pads in is in the middle of the pads and caliber!

Just replaced the rear brakes on a neglected '98 Sportster 1200 I recently bought with help of this video, and only took about an hour! My bike had the addition of a small metal clip that held the brake assembly in place which took me a bit to work out, and getting the brakes off was a bit of a pain but once they were off, everything came together really well! Next up is brake fluid, oil/primary change, and new spark plugs!

Thank You!! Watching your vids is taking the apprehension away from me. I’m now feeling confident that I should do my own work on my sportster !! Although I’m not a stranger to working on my cars and trucks. I’ve been afraid of doing something stupid and costing myself a lot of $$$$. And the way you casually calmly explain things its like being there in studio !!!

Todd looks like he came right of out central casting for a Gen X Harley biker tech sans tats but complete with his digital torque wrench. I love how he goes on on about "pin lube" (most people just call it brake lube and also put a dab on the back side of the pads to prevent brake squeal . BTW I also find cracking the top of the brake reservoir tends to make compressing the caliper pistons easier and not as messy as the bleeder valve (Mindful of a little overflow if the reservoir is already full)

Mine has a trim piece over the caliper held on by a bracket that mounts to the center bridge bolt. I was unfamiliar with the setup the first time (after doing the front) and thought I needed to slide the caliper out of whatever mount it had. Then realized the caliper was attached at the axle. But then I also ignorantly removed the bridge bolt when trying to loosen the trim bracket because it blocks the pad retaining pins. Got a lot of air in the system. I know you’re supposed to replace all the seals if you take the caliper apart but I wasn’t able to remove all that right then and there or have the parts even if I could. So I tightened it all back up and proceeded to bleed the system which took a long time. But it seems to be holding fine.

15X0Z probably isn't happy. lol I've always compressed my caliper after taking them off using a C-Clamp. Your way looked like it saves a little time by leaving the caliper on the bike, but it also could have bent the brake rotor. I noticed it flexing when you pressed on the pads. I think I'll stick with the C-Clamp way. On the port side of the bike, that DOT 5 brake fluid looked brown and nasty. It would have been a great time to put in new brake fluid.

On that particular Sporty, is it not necessary to loosen the Fluid reservoir cover, before pushing the old pads back out,... just askin :-)
@louiewatson9389
@louiewatson9389 Год назад
Not if you didn't over fill the fluid. That's on any hydraulic brakes. Don't top it off unless it's leaking which should be fixed immediately. As pads wear the fluid level will drop. Low fluid level and no leaks indicates it's time for new pads.
@jefftilghman9059
@jefftilghman9059 4 года назад
That brake fluid a little dark to me. I would change it if it were my bike. And I did. My bike is only 5 years old now, a 2015, and I changed my brake fluid with a hand vacuum pump. Fresh brake fluid did make a difference in the feel of the brakes, especially the rear for some reason. Because, I'm sure you know but some viewers may not, brake fluid does absorb moisture which can make the brakes feel spongy!
@LegionPrime
@LegionPrime 2 года назад
Easiest way to screw with someone is to flush their brake fluid. First time I flushed the brake fluid in one of my vehicles it felt like I damn near went through the windshield the first time I hit the brakes outside the parking lot. LOL

I've watched your video and it seems pretty straight forward doing brakes on my Sportster. Two questions; Are the front brakes the same? And where do I get this brake pin lube?
@superwallaby6954
@superwallaby6954 Год назад
Just did the front brakes on my 2000 sportster yesterday, super easy takes like 10 minutes. Easier than rear because I loosened the two 1/4in 12 point pins and then I used a 10mm 12 point to take the caliper off the rotor so that it was easier to work with you can just hold the whole caliper in your hand.

another reason i prefer my Dyna to a Sporty.. that rear break master is getting boiled by the exhaust pipes top and bottom. Radiational heat is bad for fluid viscosity and density
@louiewatson9389
@louiewatson9389 Год назад
Your brake fluid gets super hot just from use. The friction from the pads and rotors radiates into the calipers thus the fluid. Also just the hydraulic pressure alone will make it hot. No big deal.
