How to change skateboard bearings and wheels EASILY

Straight to the point tutorial on how to change your skateboard bearings, easily and correctly. Beginners should also learn about how to maintain your board, and we'll start with your bearings. If you feel like your wheels don't turn, or you feel like you have to push too much, it's time for new bearings.
Speed washers are recommended, bearing spacers are optional. I touched on their benefits in the video; personally, I always use speed washers and bearing spacers.

@fyjypko4207
@fyjypko4207 Год назад
If you tighten the axle fully ypu need a bearing washer inside your wheel the washer will take the load of the inner bearing race if you dont have the washer there and you tighten the wheel fully the nut wil basicly squeze the inner races toghether creating a lot more friction if you have the washer there that wont happen and your wheel should spin as fast if it loose and it will reduce the vibrations and the board will sound basicly like a log

Agree on the 5/16”. Good way to strip the nut. Speaking to the axles… Yeah, that’s the part that sticks out from the hanger. Wheels ride on axles- that’s a thing. The truck is the entire assembly between the deck and wheels, and is made of many parts including the axle.

I'd add you want to loosen the nut till there's the ever so slightest amount of play when you push it in and out at that point they'll roll the best and the small amount of play won't effect how they skate (they difference between no play and th amount of plat you want is gonna be like 1/16th of a turn)

This seems like a weird question, but it’s not. I’ve always faced them flat-out and they seem to seat better when tightened and equipment is new. If your equipment is older and more worn I would just experiment until you get the wheels rolling smoothly.

@DRY-C0WB0Y
@DRY-C0WB0Y 9 месяцев назад
The ones on the outside of the bearings next to the truck hanger and axle nut are commonly referred to as speed rings (layman’s term: axle washers). The one between the bearings is called a bearing spacer and they’re not a standardized size, mostly because the width between bearing seats in the core isn’t standardized. Fractions of millimeters count in this application. If your spacers don’t match the space between bearing seats you’ll either have slop for your bearings to get pushed side-side inside the wheels or you’ll pinch the urethane and cause drag on the inside plane of the bearings. If the spacer is too short you can try adding a speed ring. If it’s too long you can try sanding the end of the spacer-*sanding on a flat/level surface in a circular motion to avoid creating a rocker/bow on the end*. Also… Drag can happen if the spacers have a thicker diameter too, so make sure the spacers can fall through the core of the wheel.

@@danielfleck9663~ No problem! I should mention that the entire goal is to make spacer, bearings, and washers all snug. If they’re slightly loose (like most people who don’t use spacers) to where the inner bearing race still spins on the axle then there’s no point in doing it. It’s going to sound different too, if everything is snug. The extra play around the bearings contributes greatly to the roar your board makes going down the street. This might be welcome on rougher terrain, but otherwise most skaters enjoy it, so it may not even be worth doing if you fall into that category. Bearings are generally cheap, and not a high failure rate item, so aiming for mechanical precision with spacers isn’t a big priority unless you’re aiming for high speeds like downhillers reach.

@DRY-C0WB0Y
@DRY-C0WB0Y 9 месяцев назад
Sounds like maybe cheap bearings. If they can’t withstand the force of you putting them on then I wouldn’t trust them to skate on. If it’s because you ride really hard wheels, then try applying a little spit around the core to help them slide in. Do not use oil.

Skate shops will usually have them behind the counter with all the other little extras like speed rings and nuts. The more important part is making sure they actually fit your wheels. The core section between bearing seats is usually about 10mm, but is not standardized or the same with every wheel. If the spacer is too short you’ll pinch the urethane and create drag on the inner plane of the bearings. Too long and you’ll have slop where the bearings can slide side-side inside the wheel. If it’s too short try adding a speed ring. Too long you can try sanding the end on a flat surface *in a circular motion to avoid rocker/bowed end*. Rocker/bow or angled ends will cause the bearings to seat at an angle and cause friction.

@DRY-C0WB0Y
@DRY-C0WB0Y 9 месяцев назад
If you care about your equipment, yes. They reduce friction between the hanger and inner bearing (the end of the cast hanger is not always perfectly smooth, which is always something to check, but even if so the ring reducing friction by creating a gap), and the outer ring does the same thing with the axle nut and outer bearing. Your equipment will last longer with these cheap devices.

no they don’t. But new trucks usually always come with speed washers, not spacers though. if you don’t have speed washers, usually your local skate shop will have a bin of free hardware and if you’re nice enough and ask, they’ll hook you up with what you need. I hope this helped🤙🏼

Not when they are new, they come lubricated from the factory. If you are removing the Shields and cleaning them, you need to use lubricant. They make specialized lubricant, but I recommend PB blaster. It's available everywhere, walmart, Harbor freight, Home depot, etc. And it's a lot cheaper.
@DRY-C0WB0Y
@DRY-C0WB0Y 9 месяцев назад
No not use oil to insert your bearings into the wheels. Urethane is “oil resistant”, but that only applies to short term exposure like riding down the street. Prolonged exposure to oil will eventually cause the urethane to start breaking down. If you need a little lube to get the wheels on, just use a little spit- no joke.

I use a 3/8” socket handle to save the axle threads. Looks like a screwdriver, but has the 3/8” socket fitment. Comes with most cheap socket sets. I’ve had the same one since high school. Often handier than using the whole board in tighter spaces like a car too.
@chrhadden

@DRY-C0WB0Y
@DRY-C0WB0Y 9 месяцев назад
It’s a matter of personal preference. Using spacers properly will definitely knock down the barking sound caused by the vibration of a looser wheel setup, but if your bearing setup isn’t tight you’re actually wearing away at your axles and the inside of the inner bearing race, creating more slop. Downhill skaters can create a serious amount of friction if the bearings aren’t tight. Friction equals heat, which can affect the axle hardness.
