During our preventative maintenance monthly impeller inspection, we identified an engine impeller that was missing a blade. This video will walk you through the steps to access, remove and replace an engine impeller on a Volvo IPS D6 engine.

Another great video on "how to do it" with some good pointers too .. (To insert the impeller, you can use "zip-ties" around the impeller to hold the blades in and allow you to insert it deep enough into the housing, snipping off the zip-ties just before completing the press-in.) I liked how you sped up the process so it didn't drag out .. Well Done, Capt!

@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
Thank you sir! The zip-ties is a great option that a lot of the techs I know use. Honestly, I don’t use it too often but it does work well. For me, a whole bunch of boat soap or Dawn soap works just fine to get it into position - just make sure you’ve got a clean rag to dry your hands otherwise using any tool after that becomes a challenge 🤣

I love these videos, but the more and more I watch them I realise just how little manufacturers (boat and engine) focus on making repairs and maintenance user friendly, especially for the owner-operator market, who don't want the cost of crew, mechanics and engineers. This is another reason to move to electric motors faster. It just simplifies everything.

Captain Dan, Awesome Video. I've only changed impellers on outboards but interesting to see done it on a huge inboard motor.
@ElevateYacht

Outboard impeller changes can be more work with the removing of the drive and whatnot. Great work man! The hardest part is fitting in some of these engine rooms to do the work. This starboard engine wasn’t bad but the port engine impeller is on the outside of that engine so I’m sandwiched between the engine and the hull 😞 thanks for watching man!!

That's alot of work... sure glad I have Cummins on my boat. I can change impellers in less than 10 minutes. I changed the original factory water pumps to pumps from Seaboard Marine in California. Their impellers even come with a special tool to pull them with. 😎

Having an impeller puller tool is a game changer. A video of an impeller change before the puller might have been flagged for too many swears 🤣🤦🏼‍♂️ Smart move to change out the water pumps. Factory installed, isn’t always the best. Thank you for watching and contributing!

Capt Dan - thanks for the great video. Question, the 'impeller puller' -- is that a bit one can purchase?.... seems like its got to be the right size nut that goes into the Volvo hub etc!

Great video! But where can I find the impeller bolt that you use? I need one that is 16 MM
@markkimba74
@markkimba74 Год назад
To make it a little easier putting that impeller in, can I suggest you slacken the belt from the water pump pulley so that you can then turn the pulley by hand and then you can push the impeller into the housing by hand and when it engages the splines on the pump shaft you rotate the pulley by hand whilst pushing the impeller in by hand and it will slip in easily because as it rotates the side loading gets corrected and straightens the angle of the impeller up, you therefore don't risk damaging the brass splines up inside the impeller by forcing it with a tool. I've done a few in my time and while doing any service I have an order of play that will make it easier for any associated parts to be removed... bigger impellers get put in warm water on a cold day about a half and hour before they need to be put in to soften the rubber slighlty... (NOT very hot water, before anybody shoots me here for damaging the rubber with heat).

Captain Dan, I really enjoyed watching you change that pretty wide impeller. I have seen people change them on smaller engines in sailing catamarans and small sail boats. Your attention to detail is fantastic! Why does Volvo painting everything? It looks cool, but very impractical when you paint black hoses and it peels off when move them?
@ElevateYacht
@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
Thank you very much for the compliment and for watching the video! I have no clue why they like to paint the hoses which will flake off so quickly like that. Definitely not practical - but it does look pretty when brand new 😂 Thank you for watching and commenting! Welcome to the channel.

Hello, enjoyed the video. In one study they found that amateurs (like me) over tighten bolts while professionals undertighten. As there are several bolts should they be torqued up by us amateurs? If so what is the torque setting? Thanks form the UK
@ElevateYacht
@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
Great question! I’ve always been taught to make the bolts “snug”, without over tightening them. With the number of different engines that we work on for the basic stuff like impellers - we stick to that rule. If you looked up each individual manufacturer, they may have a specific torque setting, but a good rule of thumb is not over tightening and not under either. Snug and secure. Thank you very much for watching and for the great question! Cheers!

Does impeller blades have to face a particular direction? Or once main turned on impeller will right itself? Thank you!

Great question! They may bend in different directions when you first set it in place, but the blades will fold into proper position when the impeller begins spinning. Thank for you watching and commenting!

That impeller removal tool you got there, any idea what the threads are?
@ElevateYacht
@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
Unfortunately, I do not know the thread off the top of my head. It’s a pretty universal tool. Just Google Volvo Impeller Puller and you’ll get a number of hits. I ordered mine through the parts department of a local marina. Thank you for watching and commenting!

How in the heck can you tell if teeth are lined up on impeller w impeller housing? Would hate to break something forcing it?!! Thanks again!
@ElevateYacht
@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
The teeth are made of metal and are on a thick metal post, so as long as you’re not overly forcing, you shouldn’t have to worry about that. As I am sliding the impeller into position, I can slightly twist it until you feel the impeller “click” into position. If you try to push it in and it does not slide in with just a little pressure, try twisting it again. It might take a time or two to twist then push until it officially seats in the right spot but you’ll know. Thank you for watching and for your question!

Do you know where I can get a 16mm impeller bolt like the one you use?
@ElevateYacht
@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
Great question! The part itself was ordered through my local marine supply store. There are a number of different options but the one I requested is for Volvo impellers specifically. Cumins also makes one - they are not interchangeable. As far as the length of bolt, the kit comes with one specific bolt but I wanted a longer option, so I went to the local hardware store and found one that screwed into my fitting properly. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I’ve heard that trick before. I tried it and must have done it wrong because it didn’t go as smoothly as I anticipated. Once they are good and lubed up with the soap or grease, they pop in pretty good. Fully seating them takes the extra effort my way 😔

Why not remove the wire/plug to the oil filter ? seams like you will cave way better access and not risking damaging the wires!

That is definitely an option. The only time it’s really in the way is when accessing the back two cover screws but it could give you a clearer shot at it. Good input! Thanks for watching!

On my impeller changes, I remove the fuel filter water indicator connector to get it out of my way and to prevent my clumsy hands from potentially damaging it. Use the Globe run dry impellers so you don’t have the fins break on the flimsy cheaply made Volvo brand. Unless you are still under warranty.

What a crap design for a part that's liable to be changed! Would soaking the new one in hottish water make it easier?
@ElevateYacht
@ElevateYacht 2 года назад
Meaning a bad design because they piece apart eventually? If there is preventative maintenance done on the vessel, one would likely identify issues with the impeller before it loses any blades. The part is inexpensive and easy to change. I have seen them made with metal but they are likely more expensive and more difficult to replace? Plus the rubber most likely has a better seal to help pump the water most efficiently. Thank you for watching and for commenting!
