The Transfer Case Oil change is one of the easier jobs to carry out yourself and only requires some basic hand tools and equipment. The 4wd transfer case is in control of transferring drive between the front and rear axles and also enabling us to select ultra low range gearing inside the transfer case. This gearing allows us to have total control in difficult off-road situations.
To check your transfer case oil follow these steps below -
1. remove the transfer case fill bung
2. take a small sample of the oil
3. put the oil sample onto a white piece of paper or towel
4. compare the oil sample to some fresh oil
5. if oil is dark, burnt or very old - replace with fresh oil/fluid
6. enjoy trouble free 4wd transfer operation
These steps will enable you to accurately check and maintain your 4wd transfer case and its oil. By regularly maintaining the oil in our driveline components we ensure trouble free operation for hundreds of thousands of kilometers. The 4wd transfer case oil change is best carried out when the vehicle is at operating temperature. This ensures that the oil thins out enough so that the majority of the old oil is removed from the transfer case.
You will require some basic hand tools and bits and pieces to carry out the transfer case fluid change. You will need -
- Oil drain tray
- Socket set and breaker bar
- Cardboard
- Oil transfer pump
- Transfer case oil
- Degreaser
Allow approximately 1 hour to carry out the transfer case oil change. This is an easy job for an avid DIYer. Ensure you only roll under the vehicle when it is secured in park with the handbrake on and with the wheels chocked.
The 4wd transfer case transmits drive from the transmission to the rear wheels when 2wd is selected. When 4wd high range is selected via either the transfer stick or the electronic buttons the transfer engages the drive to the front and rear axles. Then when selecting low range, the transfer case selects ultra low gearing internally to give a large reduction in output speed. In the Isuzu Mu-x and D-max the transfer case is controlled electronically via a selection switch inside the vehicle.
The Isuzu Mu-x and D-max use engine oil in the transfer case, I use 10w40 fully synthetic engine oil in the Mu-x transfer case. Ensure you check the manufacturers specifications or your local auto store to find out what oil is recommended for your vehicle.
Cheers Guys :)

What oil goes into the transfer case?
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick Год назад
@Fox Md for the isuzu d-max and mu-x it's 5w30 engine oil. Every manufacturer is different, if you have a different vehicle ask your local parts department.

@@LowRangeNick Thanks for the reply Nick, I have a 2012 DMax and 5w30 all the way up to 20w50 is recommended in the manual which is the same recommendation as the engine oil. I'm running Penrite HPR Diesel 10 10w-40 semi synthetic as engine oil and I was wondering if this would be suitable for the transfer-case too, the manual says it ok but always good to get another opinion.

Thx Nick. More great info 👍 I run a Hilux, just checked the handbook, and like your Mux, all the manufacturer shows is “Inspect” every 2 years for the transfer case (& the auto) - interesting how they effectively treat them as a sealed unit. For me both those get serviced every 2 years regardless. Have a great and safe festive season. Catcha in the New year Cheers

Nick, never miss your uploads mate. Last 2 oil changes with Ryco filters, I have had leakage from the filter onto the ground. Filter has been hand tightened best I can. Buggered if i know
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 2 года назад
Hey Adz! I haven't had any issues with the RYCO filter seals leaking before. Maybe my mechanic hands can get the filter done up really tight haha! As long as you are cleaning the sealing surface before fitting the new oil filter and lubricating the new oil filter O ring before installing I dont see why they should leak. You could try a genuine oil filter and check the oil filter housing where the filter seals for any damage? Or buy a hoop style filter tool and just nip the filter up a little bit tighter. Hope that helps Adz!

As always great video Nick! Just a quick questions: I get a slight drip on the drive shaft coming out of the transfer case. Still there after changing the oil. Not sure if you've experienced it? I've read that its a common leak when you've got a lifted car. Just wondering what you think. Cheers
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 2 года назад
I have seen it on a few vehicles due to big lift, the tailshaft slips out of the seal a bit too far. You can get tailshaft spacers which will push it back in. It could also be as simple as just a leaky output shaft seal.

does anyone know if a damaged transfer case leak oil through the transfer case seal isuzu is blaming my 2 inch warrenty and are saying thats causing the leak but alot of people have the same car and with a 3 inch body lift hasnt done anything to the car so im really considering that that the damage might be in the transfer box its self

The complete automatic Transmission will hold around 10l of oil but when draining the oil you can't get the oil out of the torque converter so you can really only drain about 4l out at a time.
