Amazon or any large RV store will have a heavy duty on/off switch so you don’t need to disconnect the battery cable to the winch every time you use it.

I've always wondered what regulates the amperage on the 7 pin 12 volt. What voltage does it charge at when the truck is running? Is it 14.4 just like the battery under the hood?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Год назад
Yes it charges directly from the alternator.
@raytonwhite4187
@raytonwhite4187 5 месяцев назад
No that’s not true. Any excess batteries will not be charged at 14.4 going through 14 gauge wire. You’ll be lucky to get 12.9 or 13 at the rear battery.
@ntme9
@ntme9 5 месяцев назад
@@raytonwhite4187 Not exactly, it's complicated, it depends on the amps going though the wire. If the battery is fully charged and there is no transfer of wattage you will see 14.4v (or same as voltage at truck battery) If the battery is low, say 11 volts resting, and you plug it in, then you will get a transfer of high wattage, thus high amps, thus voltage drop (bc of small wire), but as the SOC (state of charge) goes up on the battery, simultaneously the current draw will drop and the voltage will rise. No different than if you have two water tanks connected with a line and one is higher than the other, they will flow to each other if you open the valve and eventually even out.

What does the 4A charger in the first half of this video have to do with the 7 pin plug charging of the winch battery? What is the fuse rating that feeds that 7 pin connector? How does operating a winch (~300A) not blow that fuse while it is connected, even it the second battery? Did you install a breaker as you mentioned or rather a fuse (replaceable vs resettable)? What amperage did you install in the positive line?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC 6 месяцев назад
That charger was just what I used to top off the battery to start with. I am not sure what fuse the truck has on the 7 pin, but I have a 3oo amp resettable breaker on the winch line. It has never blown. Thanks for the questions.
@bryanmccammon1116
@bryanmccammon1116 Год назад
What size circuit breaker did you install. I'd like to do what you did but with a 1000 watt power inverter instead of a battery
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Год назад
You need to check the max draw of your winch and whatever else will be running on the line and see what your truck fuse is to determine what size breaker you will need. A power inverter is for household 110 stuff, unless that is what your winch runs on?
@anthonyspadafora1384

The 12 volt terminal on the truck side of the plug, isnt that a much smaller wire? Does that wire also have a fuse?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Месяц назад
Using a bigger wire is better than using a smaller wire. I believe it is all fused.

What power convertor? The winch runs off the battery in the trailer. Everything is working great.

Can you charge a travel trailer battery while it's in it's cradle with a regular harbor freight car battery charger? (Microprocessor charger)

I would set it up with a trickle charger when you are not using it to keep it topped off.

Did you run a ground wire from the plug to the negative post on the battery?
@DansGarageNC

No, the plug is grounded to the chassis of the trailer and I ran a wire from the battery to the chassis as well.
@brandonhamner3928

Just curious on what would happen, if anything, if you spliced from the hot wire on your 7 pin trailer harness as well as a ground wire (adding battery clips and a way to quick disconnect from harness slice) to the trailer battery. Would there be enough power to operate the winch at all? Would it charge the battery any if you left it hooked up while the vehicle was running?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Год назад
That is basically what I did.
@raytonwhite4187
@raytonwhite4187 5 месяцев назад
That is basically what you did but you also added a battery charger. Could you have just ran a wire from your seven pin straight to your battery. And if so, would your alternator charge that back battery. Without the battery charger.
@JamesJones-th9mi
@JamesJones-th9mi 7 месяцев назад
Cuz what I was thinking of doing is tap into that pigtail running the wire to the positive and then for the negative just running in a separate wire from the battery to the fame
@DansGarageNC

The truck and trailer are grounded through the hitch as well, so either way should work.

Hey Dan, I am looking into buying a Max Built ca hauler and I saw your video about a year ago. How is the trailer holding up? Would you recommend it?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC 2 года назад
Yes, It has been great so far. I have picked up a couple cars from VA and brought them to NC. I did add a box on the tongue with a battery and a winch. I am going to put locks on the ramps also. I prefer the ramps that slide out the rear, but these are working ok. I do store them upside down so water does not pool in them. No complaints.

Max built’s manufacturing facility is literally just down the road from my house. I just bought a 24’ steel deck from them and working on doing this same set up myself. Their trailers look pretty good so far

Can trailer battery start a truck in case of low or death battery ?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Год назад
If you don't put in an isolator, yea. But if your truck battery dies and they are tied together, the trailer one may be also. I would recommend a lithium ion battery jumper pack, very handy.
@chickenfoundation9323
@chickenfoundation9323 Год назад
What about the ground? Does the battery ground to the trailer frame or does it need to ground to the harness?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Год назад
There is a ground in the harness, but the trailer frame should be grounded also.
@raytonwhite4187
@raytonwhite4187 5 месяцев назад
Another good question. But you cannot use a trailer as a ground. The trailer is used as a neutral to complete a circuit. That’s why when you install a 12 V light in your trailer. One power goes into the light and a neutral comes out, connecting to the frame, which is a neutralcompleting a circuit. If you are grounding a battery to a trailer frame, you would be very surprised checking the amperage of your trailer frame.

Thanks for posting this. I may have missed it, but how are you powering a 110v charger, using a 12v power supply from your 7-way plug?
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC 2 года назад
The 7 pin from the truck has a 12Volt positive from the truck, that goes to the battery on the trailer through a breaker. But that is only really to keep the battery charged up. If it gets too low, I would charge it with a battery charger.
@gadsdenconsulting7126
@gadsdenconsulting7126 2 года назад
@@DansGarageNC I see what you're saying about charging the battery off the 12v line in the 7-way plug, but isn't that charger a 110v charger that you plug into a wall outlet? I don't understand how 12v is powering a 110v electronic, if that makes sense? Thank you for the reply!
@damenrunnels7521

This does not work
@DansGarageNC
@DansGarageNC Год назад
@@damenrunnels7521 Do you need to make sure that the feed from your truck has 12 V positive and charges with your system. Check that first.
@damenrunnels7521
@damenrunnels7521 Год назад
@@DansGarageNC So I should revise... it works as a passthrough but so would just a regular wire and I just wired it that way to the 12v on the 7blade. The charger was 180 bucks I actually bought the one from your video as I was cutting the cord off of it to wire it I thought there's no way this is going to work and it doesn't it doesn't power the charger at all. Now you will get a continuous feed through it and it basically acts as a 12 volt feed through to the positive side of the battery but as I stated so does just a wire.
