I own a mk6 gti with the cczb engine 1st registered 25th June 2010. I did this check today & found it to be the faulty tensioner, getting it changed in a couple of days at the cost of £390. mine has just done 70k miles & I've had no problem so far but changing it for piece of mind. It was all the little issues like this one that finally convinced me to sell my 2010 VW EOS. Sold the car last month for $8,000 with just over 89k miles. Then I put the cheap and reliable '91 Mazda Miata back on the road. Your videos did help me a lot with diagnosing and completing repairs for many of the other issues. As well as pointing out some things that VW ended up covering like the replacement intake manifold. Thanks for that.

I own a 2010 Passat Wagon w/106K...just replaced water pump, injectors under warranty, a coil under warranty, and I have a valve cover gasket leak for which the dealer is suggesting I pony up $2000 to fix (replacing serpentine belt etc.) now I learn about this tensioner issue. Makes me wish I still had my 1990 Miata that I sold with 235K. Spent more on the VW water pump replacement than I ever put in TOTAL on the Miata.

@billbmsn

Am I correct in understanding that the failure mode for the early tensioner is that the band covering that ratchet pawl comes off? If so, wouldn't putting a metal band tie wrap around the tensioner prevent this from happening? It could be a relatively simple fix, especially if it could be done through the inspection hole. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. -Bill

Hi My car (golf 1.4 tsi mk5 66000 miles) is showing error p3008. Initially the error code p000A appeared. I changed camshaft sensor then code p3008 came up. Most of the people are saying that timing chain needs to replace. It was fine , I just changed water pump because it was leaking, and new drive belts, with engine oil service , dsg service & spark plugs. After all this work when I started my car a code p000A appeared, then changed camshaft sensor, camshaft adjuster valve, after 5 minutes a new code p3008 came up, car starts but idle rough. When press acceleration it vibrates very heavily. What do you think might be the problem?

@nrtolv
@nrtolv 5 лет назад
Late answer, but yes, I've changed the tensioner, including both chain, guard rails, the cam gear for the exhaust side and some different seals. This was an insurance job we had. Complaints of noise and low driveability, had some engine codes about cam timings were off and such. I don't know if the tensioner is the same as the US, but the possible outcomes pretty much looks the same.

something i always wonder if the cars(jetta and up) will ever have a "asset manifest" database in one of the control units, loaded at the factory that shows an exact and TOTAL part list installed, so you don't need anything else than a VCDS or scantool to check which part numbers you have installed... granted, when replacing a part the dealer/shop would need to update that table/database with the new value(or DIYers). A step further would be extending the service interval counter for other known wear parts with a predefined interval, that way the MFD reads "TB service interval soon" or "replace TB" then the dealer already knows the parts needed or which one it had without even opening the hood. maybe it's a pipe dream but i find it silly that i can't find a manifest of the parts of my car publicly available even decoding the VIN and 3 letter matrix of options.
@blower1
@blower1 8 лет назад
+Guillermo Lovato That would require a level of consistency and management that VW (or many other manufacturers) simply do not have. You only have to be a user of VW's ETKA parts database over time to see inconsistencies on when X model of manufacture is supposed to have Y revision of parts. They often will substitute a part with a different part number on one production run to the next - probably because they have run out of the one that's supposed to be in there. I have seen this personally on my car with O2 sensors & MAP sensors. The actual O2 sensor on my 2010 1.4TSI is not listed as the correct part at any point for my engine throughout the history of it, but its an acceptable substitute.
@gglovato
@gglovato 8 лет назад
blower i have used ETKA briefly in the past, and also ELSAweb(until VW lawyered them to close the site regretfuly as that info should be publicly available) and yes they're a pain to use!. specially when you have a part where the last letter changes the car it goes to!, for example, 038128063G / L is for my car, byt J/Q are for the suran(iirc) and M depending on where i check says compatible but on other places it says it's not and the last revision of the part is L (elsa shows L as last compatbiel revision)!, sheer crazyness!

I took my 2013 GTI CBFA to the VW dealer and asked about the chain tensioner as it had never been done before. (It's a 9/2012 build date) they said that chain tensioners failing are rare and do not recommend I do it. They said I need to have an oil screen replaced every 50,000 miles and I'll be fine. Please let me know if this is correct. Thank you.

Hey Charles any DIY on how to replace the tensioner?
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 7 лет назад
I haven't done one. I am nervous to do that video. It is not a hard job, but if you do any of it wrong , you are doing big time engine damage. Maybe at some point I will.

@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 8 лет назад
+Nicholas Davis I don't. I am not sure that I am going to do that video. I am VERY concerned about people not doing that job right and damaging their engine. If I do that video, it will probably be a private video that I distribute by request, or a pay video. I don't really want someone that is not qualified to try and replace that part.

What am I looking for here? I may have missed it because I skipped around but how can I tell wether it's an old or new style tensioner?
@512kjt
@512kjt 6 лет назад
Old style tensioner has a wide "bluish" metal band around the component that fails. Newer revision has a wire spring clip around the plunger like this... www.aliexpress.com/store/product/OEM-Volkswagen-Timing-Chains-Tensioner-For-VW-Beetle-Tiguan-Jetta-Passat-B6-GTI-Passat-CC-Eos/1202321_32465781878.html

Howzit mate, I live in South-Africa and i own a 2013 Hyundai i20 Crdi. Its a 1.4Diesel. Must say pretty good cars. Im at 156000km didnt have any shit with this car at all cant sy that with my previous VW's 😂, anyway i dont know if you get them there but here our temperatures range from 0'C in winter to 38'C in the summer it's summer now... Anyway i did my service myself, that includes all filters including diesel filter. My owners manual states i should use 5w30 or 10w40. But recommends 5w30. Here 5w30 is verby expensive so i bought 5w40 Shell Helix HX8. Would it cause damage using a 5w40 instead of 5w30? As in the thicker oils it appears to be usable in the viscosity chart. Thanks man Shaun.

HI, I installed a new vw tensioner on my 09 eos 2.0 after the install when rotating the engine by the crankshaft bolt I noticed that the new tensioner is moving in and out when the engine rotates and making a snapping sound when I rotate is that normal? Thank You!
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 6 лет назад
Movement is normal and some noise is too. The movement should only be in the tension. Meaning the tensioner will move “up and down” the same way you tension the belt.

Instead of the mirror, my old eyes prefer a USB inspection camera. It has light on the tip, bendable wire to go where you want it, and it hooks up to a phone. under $20 on amazon and the best thing since sliced bread for jobs like this

My Mk6 is driving me insane, I changed the chain and got all the timing set as close as I possibly could within the measurements. And it gave me codes p0011 p0016 and p052a without even trying the first start. It cranks and stumbles but no start, and when I took the cap off the cams where still in a good spot, but the chain marks did not line up where they should.

I checked the tensioner on the gti I will be buying but I could not get it back on fully. I removed the fender liner and boost pipe to get more room but I still couldn't even if I put all my weight to it and lubricate it with fresh oil. Has anyone else struggled with reinstalling? What's the trick of getting it back on?
