How to Check Valve Clearance on a CBR600F4

This is a "how to" video on checking your valve clearances on a CBR600F4. I do not show how to change the shims in this video because my bike did not need it done. This video shows how to take the bike apart and check the clearances only. I just wanted to show that it really is not that hard to do. I dreaded it, but after doing the job I realized how easy it is.

This is great, and as far as I can tell, the only video for the naturally aspirated 2000 F4, but only half the job. Changing the shims looks to be at least as big a task again.

Really well done video. Everyone should know how to adjust their valves because over time they can tighten up and allow gases to force past your valves which will over time burn the valves and the seats. Expensive repairs result.

Thanks for sharing this great video Dave ! Great guide for some routine maintenance checks. However guys...if you hear that tapped sound and this is not your cam chain tensioner ( they sound differently, but still you might get confused ), then you most probably will need to play with the shims. If that's the situation, I'd rather advise you remove the engine unless you have a tiny Japanese hands and lots of "special" tools. Besides, it's much easier to work on the engine in a worm room having a beer ;)

thanks for sharing your learning experiences with us. it's about time for my CBR to get adjusted, just a matter of time.

My mistake on first attempt was to forget the shims are numbered of size, so 190, or 210 which means 1.90 & 2.10 mm not 0.190. Lucky I discovered before assembly other wise having to repeat operation.First time with bucket shims.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Mechanics in Germany will charge you around 300 Euros just to take a look in there and twice that much to do the adjustment on japanese bikes. Even worse with european ones. Thanks!

Wished I had found this video a few years ago, My old F4 hasnt ran and my shop said no compression - I mothballed it adn recently had thoughts of selling it, gonna try to go through the basics you've demonstrated to see how bad the damage is, only 14K miles, hoping for minimal damage

The F4 is a pretty easy bike to work on. It's a bitch to take the spark plugs out though, there is barely enough space to get to them. My Blackbird is easier in that regard.

Hi David, nice video. I thought I'd tackle this myself too. I didn't catch the part when you're supposed to retract the chain tensioner, did you just skip that part? Do you feel the difference once you're done with setting the gaps right? I have quite some power loss around 9k revs, I thought this might be the cause. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Hey SpikeCvH, i have exactly the same problem with my CBR power loss around 9k, did you ever figure out what was causing your problem? im banging my head against the wall with this ongoing issue with the bike, be nice to know if someone may have an answer to it! cheers

Only have to release cam tensioner if you have to take one or both camshafts out.

My 98 600f3 was running fine and now it's making a tapping-ticking noise..what could it be

In my area I've had rough estimates at Shops of $1,000 to do compression check valve adjustment new plugs and sync the carbs.!!!!
@Mondaymotoring
@Mondaymotoring 6 лет назад
Wow. That seems a bit high considering checking compression and changing plugs is easy. Syncing the carbs takes a little time but it shouldn't be a big deal to a competent shop.

David Monday well thank you for the reply and thank you for the video.,!!!! Luckily most repairs and service I can do myself. $1,000 was a rough estimate on the high-end if they had to remove the carbs clean and rebuild them . There could be some gaskets that needs replaced and some miscellaneous parts they wouldn't know until I got into it. ?????. But with shoprite's at$75 an hour two$115 hours per hour it does add up quick. !!!!

Great video. On cold start m uhh bike bike is making tappet sound and dies fown once engine is a little warm. Did you have to buy full shim kit?
@denisrailey777
@denisrailey777 6 лет назад
No. Can buy individual shims or packets of 5 from internet or dealer which is cheaper than a complete set which the majority you don't need.

How often are you supposed to do that?

Greetings. I have same bike just bought couple weeks ago. Having some stall problems at high rpm under load. Bike will revup in neutral with no burps. Im stuck. My airbox had four small vaccuum lines hooked up to it on rear of it. Are they spose to be somewhere else? The posts they hooked up to off airbox dont even have holes in them? HELPPPP
