My last name means to cushion - so I chose 戴 (Dài: The surname has its origin from a word which means, “to support.”) My first name, however, means pearl, but can also be used in other languages to mean daisy. So, I picked 花 (Huā: Meaning "flower, blossom") 戴花. Though, when I put that in Google translate, it translates to wear flowers. -laughs- (I know, don't trust Google translate) I did, briefly, consider the name 凰, instead of 花. 凰 (Huáng: Meaning "phoenix"). The reason I'd considered 凰 is because the phoenix is one of my favorite mythical creatures. That is, also, the reason I think it might not be a good idea to use it.

I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding here when it comes to trying to compare or "translate" Western/English-speaking names into a Chinese version. The idea that writing the sound of the Western name syllable-by-syllable (in one of the video's examples, "Christopher") in hanzi is a "translation" seems based on some idea that "Chinese names have both pleasant sounds *and* auspicious meanings" while "Western names just sound a certain way, but they don't mean anything". This isn't exactly true. The meaning of Western names comes from two sources: association and etymology. First, most Westerners associate certain characteristics with particular names, based on cultural/social cues and their own experiences with people who have the name. If you asked an English speaker whether "Gertrude" sounded like a name for someone trendy in their 30s or someone conservative in their 80s, you would get a clear answer. Second, etymology: "Christopher" does mean something in the ancient Greek language that English took it from: "Christ-bearer", or, we might say in a slightly more secular or cross-cultural way, "messenger of the divine". Wouldn't it be better to translate that kind of meaning into a pair of Chinese characters, and consider that the translation of the Western name into Chinese?

I'll stick to 列昂·塔尔西纳 since I don't like the idea of pretending to be chinese
