How to clean a Kerosene Heater

This video we tackle cleaning a common wick style kerosene heater. These heaters are available everywhere and have been for years. Basic maintenance will provide you warmth and a cleaner environment you're working or living in. And if it needs to be mentioned, you need incoming air to vent. These are not to be used in tight living quarters without replenishing air flow.

Thank you Darlene! I was just thinking tonight I'm going to refresh this video. A little better picture and quality. I was using this heater yesterday all day, worked well, but, it's filthy and needs a total cleaning. They are really great quiet heaters. I pinned your comment, appreciate your comment very much.

Per manufacturers instructions you allow these to burn out completely (burn until all fuel is burned out of wick....I suggest you do this outside & it takes longer than you might think) every other tank to clean wick. Then you take a pair of pliers and carefully pinch wick all the way around to break up carbon deposits in wick. I then use shop vac to suck out all the "bits" from wick area. Be sure to also scrub carbon build up from top (and maybe sides) of that heat shield to lesson odors and off gassing. I have had and used mine for 18 years now and have only replaced wick 3 times.

I have a 12x16 sun room that I like to use for an "office" (I'm retired though, so no work going on!) This is the first winter I've done this. ru-vid.comUgkxl2o1MQU4aMgmFk_cMqer4nH2ptpDEM6h I have 2 x 1500 watt electric heaters that are on schedules in Home Assistant. After less than one month of that, I decided a new solution was needed (electric bill went up quite a bit more than expected). I have a 23,000 btu kerosene heater, so I tried that. It definitely works, too well! It heats the space up quickly, but you really can't turn these types of heater down and have then burn efficiently, so I was always lighting it and putting it out. I decided to try this model, and it is perfect for this application. In the morning at 0600 I turn both electric heaters on and light this heater. Within 30 minutes, it's up to 60 degrees (from 35 to 40F), and within an hour it's at 68F. At that point the electric heaters shut off and pretty much stay off the rest of the day. Fuel consumption is also greatly reduced (as would be expected, given that it's half the size/btu output). I can get 2 x 4 hour burns out of a full tank. I also like having these around as emergency backup heat, this is my third kerosene heater. I wish kerosene was cheaper, but not much you can do about that. I have read that you can use #1 diesel with a bit of alcohol added; not sure if I want to go through all that, although diesel is about 2 bucks a gallon cheaper. More research needed.

I've owned my Dynaglo for, jeesh, 10-12 years, been a long time. I've never changed the wick. If you clean it when you notice the flame burning not as bright, which might be once a year it will last a long time. Using an old toothbrush gently to clean it my cause the wick to fray, but it doesn't shorten it. It just removes the carbon deposits. Should last indefinitely.

I have a 9000 BTU camping kerosene heater and I have used it twice. It was supposed to have been brand new but the two times that I used it, it had soot and carbon build up on the burner and chimney. I just performed a dry burn yesterday and before lighting it up again I'm going to use my brush to clean the wick. If this cleaning doesn't work my next step will be to replace the wick. The current wick doesn't look to be dirty at all but it does raise up to about half inch when the knob is turned fully to the right. Thanks for your video and info.

QuantumRift Shouldn't need to clean it yet unless you turn the flame down, which you don't want to do. Always run it cranked on high, it runs much cleaner. If the fuel is a lower grade kerosene may need to clean it more often. After awhile you'll see the small carbon on the wick, quick brush will take it off and make it burn better.

I hear stories of people saying they have to turn the things down that it gets that hot in the garage on 30-40F days. The PO I bought mine from says he replaced the wick and after looking at it, it is totally white still. Is there a break-in period for new hardware or are people over exaggerating the performance of these types of heaters (the 18,000-23,000BTU range heaters)?

Your wick is probably clogged with carbon which is not allowing it to drop to its fully "off" setting. If so, take the heater outside and perform a "dry burn." You do this by allowing the heater to use up all the fuel in the tank. The flame will eventually go out on its own. The heater will smell while doing this which is why it's done outdoors. After the flame has gone out, wait maybe half an hour, then turn the wick as high as it will go and relight it. Again, allow the flame to burn itself out. Repeat this step one more time. After the third burn, take the top of the heater off to gain access to the top of the wick. Then take a brush with plastic bristles (a toothbrush works well), and brush the exposed part of the wick. This will remove any loose carbon still in the fibers. If there are hard carbon deposits that won't come off with this treatment they can be crushed using a pair of pliers, then brushed away. When done properly the wick should feel like soft felt to the touch. The heater can now be reassembled and refilled with kerosene. Allow at least 30 minutes for the fresh fuel to fully saturate the wick before lighting. If carbon clogging was the cause of the wick not extinguishing, it should now retract fully when you shut the heater off.

I've been using a kero heater mostly during very cold winter days and nights.. ( I have no fear of leaving it run at night.. ) use a smoke detector in the same room and a CO2 detector.. I have found several heaters at thrift stores.. a company called Miles Stairs Wick Shop.. online.. has wicks for many oil lanterns and kero heaters.. all makes.. I am going to start using diesel fuel.. with the additive for trucks.. or a pint of isopropyl alcohol per 5 gallons .. keeps the wick in good shape.. I wouldn't worry about cleaning the wick.. the one in this video isn't dirty at all.. it will get black over time. .. Don't even worry about it.. officially Miles has told me to let your fuel run out and then refuel.. this keep the wick in better condition over time.. but you have to wait an hour after putting new fuel in the tank so the wick gets wet before lighting.. I have done this and works great.. you have to have most of the glass showing red hot at least half for better fuel economy.. the manufacturers show all red... keeps their liabilities covered... but I have had mine less than 25% red for best fuel economy and have had no ill effects no smoke alarm.. or CO2 warning.. you will get alarm going off just after lighting the stove tho.. don't get panicked at that though. It will stop smoking in just a minute after getting the flame level just right.. takes practice. Additives (pine odor) are made to keep the smell down or use the diesel fuel.. it has very little smell..

Thanks for sharing! I've noticed in my garage sometimes I will get a scratchy throat, but, that could have also been due to the old wick. Recently replaced my wick and it burns a lot hotter and cleaner. Cleaning the wick is important for maintenance, but they do fray and get old. A new wick does make quite a difference.
@myawesomelife9269
@myawesomelife9269 Год назад
@@CraigArndt Craig, I did the wick replacement as you recommended and specified in the video. I have a Corona 23-DK which had the original wick from when the unit was purchased new in 1985ish. The most difficult aspect of doing this is lining up the wick pins to the holes for proper movement. One area you did not discuss is the wick is dry when new; the center drum needs to be lubricated with kerosene or WD-40. A dry wick will overload the wick mechanism and prevent movement, so it was trial and error until I was able finally get the wick to slide without too much effort. Anyway, thanks for an otherwise great video. Hope that this wick will last half as long as the old one did.

So basically your saying if your heater wick needs cleaned just finger it and that's it😒 now Seriously how do I get mine to quit smoking it smokes no matter what height

I think I said use a tooth brush or soft brush to rub the top carbon pieces off. It works pretty well for general maintenance. If yours smokes all the time in any position, 1 your wick is dirty or 2, the ring you lift to light it isn't seated properly. Assuming you're using clean 1K fuel.

Kimberly Hand There is no carbon monoxide concerns, it's in a garage that has fresh air entering and exiting. I've put a CO meter over the unit and registered 0.00. If you use in a house I would have a window open.
