In this step by step beginner sewing tutorial, Lyric shows you how to keep the bobbin area of any sewing machine clean. I suggest brushing out the bobbin casing every time you change a bobbin. In this video we go one step further and clean out underneath the feed dogs. I'll be using a lovely old sewing machine Bernina 930.

Your Bernina videos are so helpful! I am a novice sewer and was gifted a wonderful Bernina 930 sewing machine by my Mother In Law. Your videos helped me get over that "learning curve" and the machine sews like a dream. Thank you!

You are very welcome. Welcome to the wonderful world of sewing. I have sewn on every fancy machine there is and this old 930 is still my favorite. Take care of it and it will never die.

Great video about oiling and not using canned air! I didn’t understand how to put the bobbin casing back. It just kept falling out and didn’t seem to fit. I found someone else’s video from Australia who showed up close exactly how it fits in there. It’s not just haphazard. There are parts on both sides that have to connect. The easiest way I have found is (1) tilt the machine back just a bit and put something about an ich or so tall under it so you can see what you’re doing and (2);shine a good light on it. (2) turn the flywheel until you get a half moon at the bottom and then hold the casing so you see the three holes at the top. If you line up the narrow finger-like protrusion on the right with where it should sit above the jagged looking part on the right side of the half moon on the bottom then the left side will be correct too. When you let go it should just stay by itself but there is no clicking in place. Then close the door and make sure that clicks closed. I hope this helps someone as frustrated as I was putting it back together.

That was SO helpful. I got so much more out than I usually do just brushing. Thank you. I have a Bernina 801.

Great instruction video. This all applies to my 1970 vintage 730 Record which I inherited 5 years ago. There were still places I couldn't get into with a typewriter brush (lol) so I applied a vacuum cleaner to it and it was amazing how many broken needles and pins were down there. Thank you for pointing out the lever for opening the top of the bed. Now the machine us really clean and runs so quietly.

These machines are absolute workhorses! If we take care of them they will last generations!

Thanks, you saved me! Thread jam, started removing parts, cleaning, and couldn't figure out how to get it back together. Tiny little rubber gaskets popped off the fold-down part. didn't even realize there were any, yeash!

My mom passed last year and my sister in law was upset that I was getting my mothers machine. It was a brother computerized and rather than cause animosity i gave it to her. Now my daughter in loves grandmother is gifting me her machine just like this one. I haven’t gotten the machine yet but since her grandmother hasn’t sewn in so long I wanted to make sure I got it cleaned and oiled! Thank you for your video. I will go to our local sewing machine sales location and purchase the proper oil. Any particular brand you use?

Very helpful. Is there a video on lubricating the top of the 930 Bernina. I have the manual that shows were to oil, unfortunately the picture is dark and I can’t see where to oil it.

@@LyricMontgomeryKinard I had found manual online and realized that the manual doesn’t show where to oil on top when top cover is removed. When I purchased my Bernina 930 in the early 1980’s, they put an extra page inside my manual that showed the places to oil. But that copy was dark and not easy to see where it indicated. Perhaps I am not supposed to try to oil it. My tension was off, following your instructions about cleaning, oiling, and new needle helped a lot.

@@pamgross1084 TBH I usually just take the top off every once in a while, make sure everything is clean, and put a drop of oil pretty much anyplace that moves. These machines are beasts so it would be hard to mess anything up.

Hi! This was aw great video and I'm going to clean that area in my old and true Bernina 931 right now! But I need a tutorial as clear as yours to clean and oil the whole machine! I have moved way out into the boondocks of coastal Texas and I don't think there's a certified Bernina shop within 500 miles. Do you know of a tutorial that could help me? Thank you so very much!

These older machines are serious workhorses. I simply suggest taking off the lid, opening up the left side, and getting out as much of the gunk as you possibly can. Then crank the wheel slowly and put a drop of oil at the joint of every moving part. You can do this!

@@LyricMontgomeryKinard Thank you! Your video here helps me understand the concept, look for the moving parts and oil those! I got Bernina oil today, also, the kind for the older machines.

Hi there, do you know if you use CB or rotary hook oil? Bernina phone line don't seem to know about old machines...since they're a good company I was very surprised. Thought it was worth an ask!
@LyricMontgomeryKinard
@LyricMontgomeryKinard 2 года назад
Use a good mineral oil - made for sewing machines. Old machines have metal gears and rods unlike newer machines. You need an oil that is light and doesn't evaporate, leaving a gummy residue. If you have a new machine, read the manual and follow instructions. Some newer machines are self oiling, some have plastic parts that don't need oiling.

You showed very little. In fact, that lint goes way deeper than the bobbin assembly. Use tweezers, then vacuum, then blow it out. Blow out whole base, as lint hides in the middle. You never showed us how too oil this either. Misleading title.

Oh my friend, you are absolutely right about the title. It's been so long ago that I made this that I must have forgotten that I was going to add to it. I hope you found the information that was there useful and I hope you have a lovely day! Happy sewing!
