How To Clean & Lubricate Your AR-15 Series Rifle (HD)

This is a very basic video for the brand new AR owner who doesn't know anything about the platform (we were all there once guys...). I show in detail how to break down the rifle, how to clean it, and how to lubricate it to ensure proper functioning.
Before someone says the old "I do it X way and it's way better!" --- I know there are other ways that work as well. The key is keeping the gun lubricated and relatively free of carbon to ensure proper performance.
I pretty much endorse all CLPs (with the exception of RemOil--it evaporates/runs off way too fast) for use buy use Mil-Spec CLP myself personally. Synthetic motor oils from 0w-10w seem to work well for lubrication as well. As far as greases go, I recommend a lithium based grease with a broad operating temperature range. I've used expensive 'gun' greases and found 0 difference in performance with the grease used above or the Mobil 1 brand with similar specs to the grease in the video---both work great. Almost all of the handguns you see in my reviews have this on their rails.
CLP link: amzn.to/2BNzvWS
CAT M4 tool: amzn.to/2CgYVvB
If you're trying to get a more detailed cleaning, using a bore solvent to clean the bore, barrel, flash hider/barrel crown are a good idea but it doesn't need to be done every time and if done too often can even damage the rifle.

Went through basic in '71 and spent a lot of time cleaning the M-16. Our training mags were 20 rounds. Remember using the 16 round to adjust the front sight (elevation) Went to Ft. Sam for medics training and carried a 1911 Ai. Only time we saw the 16 was for annual qualification. Ended up liking the 1911 so much that I bought one after leaving the military. PSAs are built with Aero uppers/lowers so it's not surprising that it's tight. It'll loosen over time. I went to a Asymetric Warfare Group class where we could bring our personal rifles. First thing the instructors did was have us hold them at arms length and drop them on the ground. People freaked! It was awesome. Point being---don't be afraid to scratch it---it won't hurt it I promise.

Sure. CLP does the job of cleaning, lubrication, and protectant. Solvents just clean (but they do it better than CLP [generally speaking, but not always]) while also breaking down copper and other metals (again, generally). M Pro 7 for instance isn't a solvent---it's a CLP. M Pro 7 is a very good CLP though so it'll do the job for a long, long time without the need for anything else.

Nice video. I think the primary reason we cleaned the AR so often in basic training was 2 fold 1) get us to memorize the process and the parts of disassembly and reassembly, and 2) to emphasize the importance of keeping a combat weapon clean. Great vid. I agree 100% on the lube. I have been through the motions & spent $ on all the new lubes & nothing works better than standard old gun or lithium grease. I use that in the summer & I use a synthetic motor oil for winter. It's cheap & works at least as well as all these expensive "special"gun lubes. I think lots of people new to shooting spend $1,000+ on a new AR & then feel the need to buy some expensive "magic" lube. That's what I did when I was new to shooting & I spent tons of $ trying to find the best lube for my new, expensive rifle. That is totally unnecessary. Twenty dollars worth of lithium grease & a quart of synthetic motor oil & you are set for years.

Thanks for the video! All of your videos actually. I am BRAND NEW to the AR, but I am hoping my choice of AR was a good one. I saw a review you did on it after I bought it which brought me here in the first place. Just picked up the Colt LE6920 SOCOM. I was in love as soon as I saw it and it was between that and the Ruger SR-556. You're info is invaluable to someone like myself and my girlfriend so again, thanks! Now I know how to clean it up. Question though. I've heard it's best to clean the firearm before it's first use and to not just fire "out-of-the-box". What is your opinion.
@williamgollatz1911
@williamgollatz1911 10 лет назад
You won't need to "pre-clean" a fresh Colt. It could perhaps need some lubrication though.

I am a believer in MotorKote for my firearms. When I get an AR or other I pull out my souffle cup and modeler paint brush and "paint" my toys. I've painted a couple brand new PSA BCG's with it and let it sit overnight. It was shiny and smooth to the touch. It sucked it all into the pores! Even if I wipe dry the firing pin? I coat it for overnight. I remove the hand guards and paint the outside of the barrel. Wipe off the excess the next day. The barrel after being heated up looks the same as when I "painted" it. I buy "blem" uppers and lowers from PSA. The color of the finish doesn't always match. Guess what? Paint them too! Helps darken them and aid in the matching. Nice luster, and satiny glow. Upper gets painted on the inside too. Wipe out the excess the next day. Charging handles get painted also. Remove the buttstock etc. As far as grease? You aren't the first person I have seen doing that. Synthetic is probably the best way to go especially in cold weather areas. I have learned something today. What about the back end of the BCG where it contacts the buffer cap?

Don't use Motorkote! I made the same mistake. It's loaded with chlorinated esters, which will weaken and destroy the metal in your guns. If you've already used it make sure you COMPLETELY remove it from your guns.

They come lubed sometimes, I would check it and pretreat it with a good CLP makes cleaning later a lot easier, it keeps the carbon from really bonding to surfaces

Major props for using the Super Tech grease for lube. I use it for the bolt itself, too (just enough to make the bolt stem shiny), and put a light layer on the buffer and buffer spring just to make the action a little smoother and a little quieter. Spritz of CLP or oil into the breech for a bore bath and it's ready to rock.
