Yo Rocko! I just started coin collecting, like 4 days ago, sry for my noobness. You prefaced this video something like “The definitive video to answer finally answer the question, should you clean your coins or not… .” I agree 100%, . To me, I figured out the answer about half way through. I need to develop my coin restoration skills to the max. You see, 4 days ago I didn’t know what a proofs were or what uncirculated meant, but I pretty sure I do now. Look, let me try to put this in perspective. I get the same impression from you in this video and other big-time coin collectors. You guys are spending 10,000 a year if not more just on getting coins graded let alone buying and selling coins you have all the ins and outs And access to all the best coins. All the uncirculated proof coin sets you have so many of them you can even sacrifice 15 coins to this video. It’s not much of a risk if all you gotta do is make 15 coins that look totally brand new and keep them looking brand by going through the motions of washing a dirty coin. Hell, one of the procedures MS 70 is specifically designed for the coin industry and seems to be accepted as a staple from all the old timers , with a simple 3-4 step process should always work if followed perfectly, you would think. Even made the pennies look brand new again. Anyways, I get the impression that when you guys go to send in a batch of cards to get graded, you’ve already went through probably twice as many coins to make that batch. I don’t know I’m gonna look up more videos but if you’re worried about your coins, getting crappy grades, houses even possible for anything that’s been rattling around in a pocket all day have a chance at getting a MS grade even a low one.

Milk spots are attributable to improperly washed/rinsed planchets. They become part of the coin and can not be removed.

Ezest protocol, get a plastic basket to dip your coins in the solution with then rinse in distilled water and immediately submerge into acetone to ensure there are no water spots.

There's a difference between cleaning and conservation. The major grading services do some of these procedures for restoration services, they just like to make extra money.

Thanks for doing the experiment. A properly conserved coin is absolutely allowed and can be graded. An improperly conserved coin will be called cleaned. There is no one best solution as the different metals call for different treatment. Ezest is great for silver, but I wouldn't use in on copper or nickel. Acetone is always safe but is very limited in what it can do. All three are different. Ezest is an acid -- MS70 is an alkaline -- Acetone is neutral. For copper I find Coin Care to be the safest, it is not very aggressive. Looking forward to the results. Cheers!

Great Thanks, a small tip, when you apply the cleaning liquid on it on a cotton bud, don't roll the bud, thenbu can see the black dirt on the bud

Hi buddy. I used to work recently on aircraft engine components, and we used acetone sometimes to remove wax and one chemical we used that was better than acetone, especially at removing milk spots and toning, which was called Evolve. Hope this helps as I'm sure it might do a better job as carefully removing marks

my go to for cleaning is several steps, works great for silver anyway and pretty good for copper, CLR mixed with some water to dilute it some, then rinse in Lemon Juice and final rinse in plain water and DAWN ( just a few drops of Dawn. ) works great and last submission I sent to ANACS I got a 64 which was what I suspected I'd get.

I have become a master at turning those Benji's into cameos. All you need is wax to cover the fields, and a very fine medium in a soda blaster. Probably took me 50 coins to master but haven't gotten a details or damaged grade after I got good.

If you were to put the q-tip in the end of a straw it would probably make it easier to roll back and forth without any dragging or tension on the coin

Leftover Covid hand gels were usually 50 to 70% Ethanol and are great for cleaning both metals and plastics.

I just cleaned a Morgan dollar with silver polish and vigorous brushing with a tooth brush. It was heavily tarnished and now it isn't. Thoughts?

You don't drop coins in especially if you have dipped a few coins already as the sediment on the bottom as well as your fishing around can harm the coin. There is a drop well to put the coin on and just submerge or even a plastic tongs. Also never dip different metals in the same jar. Copper will come out real pinkish so best to leave out a few days to get back some color.

I bought my first 2 one once silver coins a month ago. They are from the perth myth and legends collection. I was unaware that you should not handle coins with your bare hands, and took one of them out of the protector. Because of this, it turned slightly yellow compared to the other one I didn't touch. Is there any way I can reverse this yellowing without ruining the coin? Any help is appreciated 😅

I had a proof set with a blue edge or strip my Grandfather gave me along time ago. I opened it and found a couple finger prints on them. And I know they wernt feom me, cause I only tounched the rims. I don't have it any more but I got one in change that looks like those I had opened. Wonder what its worth.

Don’t you think the speckled was from the rag when you was tapping down to dry ? I’ve heard of people blow drying them right after the rinse and not tapping dry with anything

Did you rise the coin after using acetone?

I have all ready experimented with some of that stuff. On copper. The Acetone didn't work for me. The pennies were really dirty. And how long do safely soak them.? I didn't want to rub them. I just soaked them for a few minutes. Washed in dish soap.

I can almost tell all you cleaned . But been at this since 1979. Hope it works out.

With the EZ Est You didn't harm any of your silver coins, they were polished prior to you getting them.

In test 3 with the ms70, on the benji, could see some hairline scratches from rubbing those milk spots too aggressively, think that will be a dead giveaway to the graders it was cleaned but we’ll see..

???? I can see "dopping" a toned coin but these I would never consider. The term cleaning denotes polish,friction, as opposed to liquid. Also what do you have here that is zinc??? You have silver, copper and nickel.

So basically what you're saying is that a lot of coins come right out of the mint with polishing marks already on them. So how is that take away from the value when that is original.

I hear distilled water is a better rinse to avoid spotting.

Seems to me the acetone does some things, and the M 70 does others, why don't you do them in acetone and then in M 70 and you might get the best of both worlds

They use ultrasonic cleaners too

Can I clean with hot water?

Scratching and wear are the two major factors in grading shiny is a much less a factor.

It’s not a fair test, because you are taking perfect coins without natural aging and even wear. That is the big question, can you take a dirty 1850 coin and make it dirt free and give it some luster without removing aging.

I used MS70 on modern (gold tone) dollars… turned them dark… almost purple… ruined. Failed experiment.

Make sure you rinse that stainless steel sink out cuz it's going to clean it and make funny black spots in your stainless

Here is a something that you are not actually using that is easy safe and there is one other one that is actually created for use for dental teeth porcelain veneers and stuff and they even use Coins as testing for what does to the metals and be amazed what they found out and they use it matter of fact both of them two different ones to preserve and stuff and anyone is able to actually purchase it

Ultimately, the best of all cleanings is a toothbrush and toothpaste. I swear, the coin will be like new.

So where is Part 2?

Why would anyone clean perfectly preserved coins? They didn't need cleaning at all. And, it doesn't show that if these techniques actually remove tarnish etc.

"Ugly" toning should never mark a coin down in grade. (Exception is MS-70 because thats not allowed any toning.) Good toning could mark up but bad shouldnt knock down. That's a BS opinion influencing something that ought to be objective. Some people find certain toners ugly that I find beautiful.

Rocky, as a follow up to this cleaning, do you plan on checking these coins later to see if possible re-toning occurs and the length of time when it first starts appearing? Another question is, is EZest recommended for use on copper coins? That first set cleaning was noticeable in the fields to my bad eyes. I definitely appreciate this video. ❤🫡
