// SUMMARY:
Use plastic bags or trash bags to cover exposed electrical components like the battery and alternator. This is not absolutely necessary but I just wanted to be extra safe here to avoid getting any water in the actual cells through the openings in the top of the battery. You’d obviously also want to cover an aftermarket cold air intake if you have one.
Also make sure the car has been sitting with the engine off for at least 2 hours. You don’t want to spray cold water on a hot engine to avoid any expanding and contracting which could crack something.
I’m not responsible if you damage your vehicle.
I used a blue can of Gunk engine cleaner. It's easy to use and it foams up nicely which gives you some visual feedback of where you’ve sprayed and it allows it to cling on to vertical surfaces a little more. Wipe off any overspray from the paint, headlights, and windshield.
Now for the rinse. Don’t use a pressure washer for this and try to hold the hose at least about 2 feet away. You don’t want to be hitting any part of the engine with a high pressure stream of water.
Now the final step for a more finished look which is admittedly not necessary. I’m using a product called Motorplast from Koch Chemie. The cool thing about it is it can go on a wet or dry surface and you literally just spray and walk away. It spreads out itself and dries completely, leaving a factory look and no residue. It’s water based so it’s not going to harm any plastics or rubber hoses. Most other folks I’ve seen who do this will use some kind of dressing or coating for that greasy glossy Armor All look. I’m not a huge fan of that, especially since I work on my own cars. The last thing I want is slippery nuts and bolts and clips and panels when I’m trying to remove them. This product dries completely and leaves no residue. It’s more of a satin finish, which I prefer.
