Condition Polymer Clay | Polymer Clay Conditioning | Free Polymer Clay Tutorials Weekly
Failure to condition your clay, may lessen the finished strength of your baked clay. This tutorial goes over the 4 common ways to condition your clay. Is your polymer clay too old and brittle? You can still save it! Is your polymer too mushy and sticky? Try leeching.
All polymer clays must be conditioned before your began to work on them, no matter how soft they are out of the packet and if you already conditioned it the day before. This is because after your clay has been sitting around for a while, the ingredients in polymer clay will settle and plasticizer in the clay can leech out into non-protected surfaces.
Conditioning removes air and redistributes the ingredients in the clay evenly, this is especially important for the plasticizers which holds the clay materials together and if it's mixed properly, the end piece will cure with a stronger finish.
The methods I go over for conditioning polymerclay are: manually conditioning polymerclay, conditioning polymerclay with a pasta machine, using liquid sculpey or sculpey diluent or clay softener to moisten polymerclay, and mixing soft and hard clays together to customize their properties.
