How to Connect iPhone or iPad to External Monitor

How to connect iPhone iPad to External Monitor?
All you need is your smartphone to record a video. To have a better quality you may add a microphone and mount your smartphone on a tripod. And you are good to go!
Sometimes you need an external monitor to be able to see better what is in the frame of your video that you are working on. That’s why you need an adapter to connect your smartphone with the external monitor.
You will need:
Monitor (HDMI or VGA)
Adapter (HDMI or VGA, with Type C or Lightning connection)
HDMI cable or VGA cable
Power Bank (to recharge your iPhone/iPad during the work)
1. If you already have a monitor check if it has HDMI or VGA input
2. Based on the monitor input you need HDMI or VGA adapter. But you need to also check your iPhone/iPad or iPad Pro connection to be able to select the right adapter:
2.1. iPhone/iPad - that's the lightning connection to HDMI (or VGA) adapter
2.2. iPad Pro - that's a USB-C connection to HDMI (or VGA) adapter
When you connect the external monitor via an adapter to your iPhone/iPad or iPad Pro, then you should see an icon at the top of your iPhone/iPad or iPad Pro that will indicate that your iPhone/iPad is connected.

Thanks, based on this I bought this and it worked. One issue was when I rotate my phone it doesn’t rotate the image on my monitor.

Hi GroovyTakeOn, I connected this with the VGA adapter, but no sound comes out of the TV/monitor. It’s an older “dumb” HD TV that can be used as a monitor, too. We do not have Cable TV, just WiFi, so I want to use my iPad or iPhone to TV and movie apps on this TV.. How do I get the sound to transfer to the TV, too? I tried to use an audio to audio cable with a lightning/audio adapter, but that didn’t work. I plugged it into the lightning cord “hole” on the VGA adapter you used. Obviously, I’m not doing something right! Please help! Thank you. 😊

I was able to find some info on Apple Support forum: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202044 “If you see video but can't hear audio Make sure that you're using a Digital AV adapter (which has an HDMI port). If you're using a VGA adapter, it doesn't carry audio signals. To hear audio with a VGA adapter, you need to connect to the headset jack on your TV, monitor, projector, or stereo.” Hope that’s useful.

Try to find out if Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard is going to be compatible with iPhone (it is with iPad 9th gen but I haven’t tested with the iPhone)

I use the monitor just to “control” (have the better visual) what I’m recording via iPhone/iPad and the audio is only on the iPhone/iPad side

Yes, your iPhone will record video with audio while connected to the external monitor. When you done just disconnect the monitor from your iPhone and when you play the video on your iPhone you will see the video and hear the audio

@@GroovyTakeON My question is similar. I want to play a video with audio. My monitor has HDMI, but no sound/speakers. When I plug in my 2016 iPhone SE with the lightning/HDMI adapter I see the video but if course can’t hear the audio. 1) If I used a bluetooth speaker will I be able to hear the audio? 2) What if I use the headphone jack on the iPhone? 3) I think my monitor can also use VGA. If I got that adapter, would my phone send the audio to its own speakers?

Hey, great video, a couple of questions: 1. Does it NEED to be the original Apple adapter? 2. Does it give you any lag at all while recording? I need to record and see on real time at the same time in the monitor. Thanks!

Hi Eugenio. I used the original Apple adapter. I’ve noticed that some people had few issues with the non-Apple adapters but for some it worked (which is totally not helpful). I haven’t noticed any lags so far and I’m using this setup 3-5 times a week

iPhone to external monitor arzopa with hdmi adapter or c adapter does not work. Does the cable have to be specific type because the one im using is the one that came with the monitor.

I’m using generic HDMI cable connected to HDMI-to-Lightning adapter to iPhone/iPad. I’ve noticed that sometimes I have to wait 5-10seconds till the connection is established. Also: make sure that the HDMI cable is all the way connected to the adapter

So I have a lightning to HDMI adapter that works for my monitor and I could play and see this video. But my monitor doesn’t have sound, and the phone was no longer sending the audio to its own speakers. 1) If I connect a bluetooth speaker at the same time will that work? 2) I do have an audio jack on my (old) iPhone. If I plugged in a headset or a speaker will I be able to hear the audio then?

Hi Beth, 1) I run a test - connected Bluetooth speaker to the iPhone and iPhone with the adapter to the monitor = no audio 2) maybe if you can somehow connect (usb?) speaker to the monitor and via adapter monitor to the iPhone - maybe that option

It should work with XR as well. Didn’t experience any issues with as earlier iPhones as iPhone 8plus

I run few tests abs the only thing I’ve noticed that sometimes (not always) when I connect iPhone or iPad to the monitor I have to wait a little longer for the connection being established. Which means I see the black screen for more than 10sec and then finally it’s connected.

@@nigell.8868 you can try to get the HDMI + USB adapter and connect it to your iPhone or iPad. Then you can connect the HDMI part to external monitor and the USB to external (USB) mic and see if that works. Update: upon some research it seems that the external USB mic might not work connected at the same time as monitor via adapter. The only thing I can think of is to use AirPods (they connect via Bluetooth with your iPhone) and then you still have the monitor and AirPods as “mic”

I prefer to use the HDMI connection but if you have the VGA adapter go with what you have. I’m not sure about the app you mentioned but I use this setup to present apps/videos/photos/etc. whatever I have on my phone

You don’t have to have your iPhone/iPad connected to the power bank (as in this video I just connected the iPhone via HDMI adapter to the monitor without connecting iPhone to the power source). Of course depends on time how long you are going to use your iPhone/iPad you might need to connect it to the power bank
